>doing a simple timing belt requires speciality toolsfuck all manufacturers with this shit
>>29114559
>>29114559you can 3d print parts to lock the cams
>>29114559Did you know that BMW filed a patent for a bolt with a head shaped like the company logo (the roundel), designed to prevent components from being unscrewed using standard tools? This patent was filed on June 7, 2024, and made public in December 2025.
>>29114571why do they even do this shit when chinese factories will just be like "yes dear customer we can make 10000 units of this tool that allows the user to remove this specific fastener"like what happened with apple's pentalobe screws
>>29114571How would this stop anyone? Its no different than security torx you see in a public bathroom.
>>29114571>take flathead screwdriver>cut notch in the middleIt would be interesting to see how much bmw spent on dveloping this pointless cunt move.
>>29114571I have to buy a $5 chinesium screw driver to work on my car?!? Oh the humanity!
>>29114559shoulda bought a Toyota
>>29114559Ok but what do you need these for? What purpose do they serve and why is it necessary?
>buy tools>save receipt>return tools when job done >????>profit
>>29114627NIGGERNIGGER NIGGER NIGGER
>>29114585Snap ring pliers would probably work too
>>29114577Someone in the engineering department needs to keep busy so they don't get replaced with a jeet
>>29114577>>29114583Because they probably aren't really made as security hardware, they're dress-up shit for exposed interior fasteners. Ford's been doing the same thing for a while, the Bronco has custom hardware like that all over its interior, though it's the more available Torx Plus.
>>29114583It may not stop you or me, but it stops a lot of people.>I don't know how to remove this fastener and don't have time because kids and work and shitPutting proprietary lockouts (physical or software) is an affront to right-to-repair. A minor one, but one that was clearly intentional.
>>29114559You posted quite possibly the most necessary specialty tool, anon. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.
>>29115057Why is it necessary?
>>29115067You want to lock the cams exactly as they were when you take the timing belt off. I've done valve lash adjustments on timing chain engines and it's always nerve wracking spinning them over by hand after re engaging the chain tensioner, hoping that I haven't put them out of time somehow.
>>29115073Is that seriously all these are for?Why are they so convoluted? Why don't they just use the 3D printed piece that wedges between the cam gears like the miata fags? Or the spanners on the cam hex that you cable tie together?Anyway all that shit is for fucking wrenchlets who are too retarded to figure out how to compensate for belt tension.
>>29115078Most people only do a timing belt once in their car's life, of course we're inexperienced with doing them.
>>29115078it really depends on the manufacturer. on a toyota once you lined up the marks on the cam gears, timing cover and belt, you could use binder or bulldog clips to hold the belt to the gears while you slipped it over the rest of the parts.
>>29115099on a Toyota you just put the belt on and tension itif the pulleys end up a tooth or two out after you tension it then you just simply release the tension, move the pulley a tooth or two the other way, then tension it again You don't need any special tools or clips or to lock the cams, all you need is enough of a brain to figure which way to move the pulley so that it ends up where you want it after tension.
>>29115104yeah that. been a while since i've done them but they're comfy to wrench on most of the time.
>>29114627don't even need to do thatmany auto parts stores have loaner specialty tool kits you can use for free, you just end up buying them if you don't bring them back.
>>29116593probably meant for people outside burgerland that don't have 24 hour parts stores and free tool rental
>>29114598to lock camshafts in position because the camshaft sprockets aren't keyed so if you take the sprocket off the camshaft could turn and you wouldn't have a clue
Do people not know how to set an engine to TDC, know where the correct cam gear marks are, and how to count teeth on a belt? Why make everything so much more complicated. And if simply setting the tensioner moves the crank pulley then you've got some serious ass problems with that engine lmao.
>>29114577>>29114583Its primarily to discourage retards from.being retarded. You're not going to stop someone motivated no matter what. But no one cares if a plumber or a mechanic has a specialty tool, they just don't want joe jackass running around with a schrader valve removal tool or taking apart bathroom stalls with a fucking common tool like a screwdriver
>>29118890That's what I figured they were for - those retarded euro cars which don't have the cam pulleys indexed to the cams. But then why the fuck would you need to remove the cam pulleys for a belt job?
>>29118930leaking cam seals
>>29118934Ok but OP said a simple belt job
>>29114571>>29114577>>29114583>>29114585>>29114586Even if it's a 5 second solution, the fact remains it's gay as fuck
>>29114631Autozonerâ„¢ detected (yes this is what they call sales slaves)
>>29118935Belt job should always include cam seal and waterpump as a rule
