This shit is why older cars keep appreciating in value. Recent cars are simply worse and keep nagging at you for all the wrong reasons.

i will be keeping my 2010 until the day i die.
fuck this horrible cunty bullshit.
>>
>he says, loudly, as he wears an enormous e-Watch

Don't some Renaults and Dacias have a profile button you can configure to turn off everything with one press?
Some of those nannies seem designed to crash the car as soon as you leave a pristine citycuck road.
>>
>>29119334
Yeah lots have saved profiles now. I have them on my truck and I just turn them all off.
>>
>>29119332
>2010
I'm inclined to keep my 1988 and 1993 till I die too
>>
>>29119334
That's going to be harder as modern cars will have mandatory eye tracking camera that will BEEP at you the moment you turn to look at your blind spot. Thank you Ursula!
>>
>>29119334
>Some of those nannies seem designed to crash the car as soon as you leave a pristine citycuck road.
Don't tell that to the retards at Euro NCAP, who test their cars in lab conditions and not in actual real life terrain. These "lane assist" takeovers are outright dangerous the moment the road stops being super clear and clean.
>>
In my Kia I turned off the speed limit warning once and its permanently off until I change it.
>>
>>29119341
Model year? They made that illegal in the most recent MY of cars. It just keeps getting worse the more recent it is. Recent Kia, such as the EV2, have also infamous eye tracking Bleeps and if you drive the car with sunglasses, will think you're looking at the floor and won't stop bleeping at you.

SPBP, people are fine with tech overreach until it inconveniences them, they'll let all of it slide with a smile regardless of how bad it is with a smile until it fucks up the NPC autopilot that carries them through their day.
>>
>>29119345
that's bleak.. even the seat belt warning ding that chirps at me when i drive half mile or so down the lane to the mailbox puts me on the warpath.

it's like they're wanting to make driving as unpleasant as possible through constant nagging and safety mom cuntery.
>>

pre-refresh latest gen kia sportage (2022+)
there's mercifully no camera
I think I figured out if the traction control engages, it turns off the lane keep assist, its weird theres no chime when the steering assist goes off, it just throws you out of the lane - but generally its a good system

but in general I remember reading in car magazines they would complain constantly - for years
that many manufacturers had lane keep asisst systems that "ping pong" you across the lane back and forth and this doesn't do that - to be fair the Kia steering is bad - worst part of the car just doesnt feel well connected to the wheels there's too much slack off center and kia seems to have learned their lesson, the assist systems just work and aren't too intrusive and don't really beep that much without reason

software programming is easily the best part of the kia experience - especially compared with VW which feels amateurish in comparison though I haven't tested the latest VWs and maybe they have improved it.

Mapping it to a single button press is actually illegal, the regulations force you to go through a confirmation menu that's supposed to add annoyance and friction to turning them off in hopes that people would use them. That's why you press it twice, the second press confirms it. Stellantis cars actually took this one step further where you just hold the shortcut button down for two seconds, technically speaking that's enough to count as confirming it as well.

It's kind of interesting how the approach to the nanny business differs by region: the French hate it as much as you do and shit on the regulations as much as legally possible, the Germans just grin and bear it and try to make them slightly less awful to use, and the Asians actually go above and beyond in making the beeps and screams and humiliation ritual "assists" as difficult to deal with as possible.
>>
>>29119360
2022 was still alright with this shit. It's in 2025-2026 it has really ramped up to obnoxious degrees. Imagine buying a 100k sports car and hslf the time you're fighting these nanny systems preventing you to drive it like the sports car you paid for.

Cars are going down the shitter as a hobby/interest.
>>
>>29119380
>and the Asians actually go above and beyond in making the beeps and screams and humiliation ritual "assists" as difficult to deal with as possible
Why are Asians like this? In Japanese, Korean and especially Chinese cars these blings are 1984-tier. Fo they get off from being scolded in their 50k commuter cars?
>>
>>29119410
The US passed the law mandating this junk on all cars in 2021. Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
They were just doing what they were told so they could continue selling cars and they made accurate enough systems before everyone else.
Very annoying and jap cars are basically dead, but all others will be like that soon enough.
>>
>>29119410
North orientals in particular are like this because they were raised in a social environment that supports the government and nebulous "authorities" rather than supporting individualism. it's the same environment that gave rise to salarymen
>>
>>29119329
I've ridden in some coworkers shitty 2020+ crossovers a few times and it's quite funny how, for all the "push to start" convenience they all seem to go through a ritual of disabling stuff each time they start the car before moving as if that's normal.
It makes simply turning a key and popping into gear seem like a luxury by comparison.
>>
>>29119425

>>
>>29119446
Yes, that’s where the eye monitoring cameras come from. Most companies can’t figure out how to make them accurate for alcohol detection (too many false positives) so they keep pushing back the mandate date every year but companies have been preparing for it.

They think spending 60k on iPad interiors that bleep and whine at you is luxury. Modern cars are just humiliation rituals. These only sell as company cars. No sane person wants to buy this brand new when used cars offer all the good things for half the price and no annoying modern nanny systems.

Engine warmers get the rope
>>
>>29119380
I saw a CarWow YT clip where they tested several subcompact electric cars, and it was pretty much like you described: the French ones could have the nannies switched off by pressing a button twice, while the Asian ones were particularly annoying, and very difficult to deactivate.
>>
>>29120133
The BYD was the funniest, literally yelling at you for simply just driving the car at the speed limit.

Modern cars are just humiliation simulators. It's like having a nagging wife but without the sex
>>

engine colders get the tow

eventually
>>
>>29120138
>t. knows nothing about wear
letting your engine idle to warm it up is substantially more wear than just driving it gingerly until it gets to temp. there's dozens of sae papers to back this up.

My 2025 Civic requires none of this. The first day I got it, I turned off the speed limit recognition and the lane departure warning and they've never turned themselves back on.
The infotainment screen doesn't even have that stupid "don't look at this while driving warning" that ever other modern car seems to have. I honestly thought that was a law before I bought this car.
There are still modern cars that respect the driver, they're just far and few between. Going cheap seems to have it's benefits.
>>
>>29119444
You don't have an engine block warmer you plug into your garage every night to prolong the life of your engine?
>>
>>29119333
>>he says, loudly, as he wears an enormous e-Watch
I don't even own a smart phone let alone an e-watch.
>>
At what point would aftermarket computers that are just simpler start being economically viable?
>>
>>29120568
You aren't asking about an "aftermarket computer."
You're asking about an "aftermarket OS."
>>
>>29120609
An OS is easy. Device compatiblity is not an OS. You wouldn't make an OS, you'd figure out how to make drivers for the car's hardware.

Really, though, you don't need most devices in a modern car. Most sensors are optional, even if nice to have. I'm saying the computer needs to be able to understand the drivetrain, mandatory equipment like windshield wipers and lights, and the driver's input devices that control that stuff.

There's a lot of merit to this. Take a 2016 Civic, for instance. If you try to use modern google maps on the center dash, it'll crash after an hour or so from some kind of memory leak.
>>
>>29120514
but lane departure warning is genuinely helpful unless its shittily programmed
>>
>>29120201
>Dragging 4,000 lbs with the wrong tolerances is, acktschually, better than letting it idle at minimum possible load
I’ll have to see those papers, kid. I assume they’re saying that for emissions not to help your engine last longer. In some places idling your car for over a minute is illegal now - for emissions reasons.
>>
>>29120618
What's more helpful is increasing visibility for the driver. This also actually encourages the driver to pay attention to what they are doing.
>>
>>29120136
>Modern cars are just humiliation simulators.
I have a 2018 Giulia along with a 90s car. Sometimes I drive the Giulia for long periods because it's comfier and nicer to drive on road trips. Then when I get back in the 90s car I have this overwhelming sense of peace that nothing is beeping at me.
The Giulia isn't even bad by modern standards, it basically just beeps at me for getting close to objects. But on snowy days when there are snowdrifts on either side of the road it beeps at you non-stop and you can't shut it off, and even on the lowest volume setting it's obnoxiously loud.
>>
>>29120622
it's pretty insane how "regulators" just write whatever laws they want and people actually listen to them.
>>29120618
I've only found it useful when I wanted to text and drive. It has never been useful if I'm alert and paying attention, which is how you should always drive.
>>29120624
the only times I've almost been in an accident have been due to the horrible visibility in modern cars. I literally couldn't see a cyclist crossing the street as I turned because the A pillar blocked them the entire time.

retard. i chose to get a smart watch because it is convenient and provides lots of features that i want. i don't care if all the data it tracks is getting sold and used for who the fuck knows what. that's not relevant to the discussion anyways but it's the only real downside of wearing one. now the lane departure warning and auto-start stops features and all the other bullshit is unavoidable now if you want a new car you have no choice but to have those. that is tech overreach, not a fucking smart watch that you can just take off and never have to interact with again.

Thankfully you can easily remove the SIM from those. If you don’t then it’s sending telemetry about where you go and how you drive, which is one of the biggest evils of modern cars.
