i wish this ball joint was alive so I could kill itI used a Torch, pb blaster, hammer, ball joint remover from fuckin harbor freight that broke, bought another ball joint remover that didn't work, just bent itself. What the fuck. Do i just drill shit out now? get a new steering knuckle and call it a day?
Here you can see the chipped threads when the separator bent itself
>>29120398>>29120400You gotta buy higher quality tools when you're expecting to put a ton of force through them. Pickle fork with a cheater pipe would be my weapon of choice.
>>29120400Protip: you don't just keep cranking on it till you fuck the threads. You load it up to medium strength, then you smack it on the top with a hammer, then it will most likely have loosened up again so you load it up again, then you smack it on the top with a hammer again. Some people say you need to hit the knuckle sideways and that somehow unseats the taper, but I've found hitting it directly out downwards with the tool loading it up works every time.
Buy a 5 lb sledgehammer and strike on the side right here as hard as you can until it pops off. Might take 50 swings or more. Don't try and hammer the ball joint itself. It will work trust me, but make sure it's a big sledgehammer, regular hammer won't do the trick. Oh, and make sure control arm is iron and not aluminum, doing this to aluminum arm can cause damage.
>>29120405Apparently it works but it's never made sense to me and I've never had any luck trying it.https://youtu.be/yLt1kr7GrwA?si=VALbVSztmdesPJhG&t=47
>>29120395I've had good success with these tools from harbor freight.Penetrating oil on the joint every day for a week + the tool Usually does the trick
>>29120405this but you dont need a sledge. small hammer is fine. keep tapping.likewise if you for an impact. press it against the same zone and let it tap away
>>29120416>si=
I just had success with pic related on a 50 year old truck, they'd been in for at least 30 years. Only used the two opposed arms, not the third like shown. Use real penetrating oil, not wd-40, and once it's tight crank it a turn or two, then apply heat, then whack with a hammer, then tighten a bit, heat, whack, tighten, etc. until it goes. Are you even using jackstands bro?
skip the sledge and invest in one of these
>>29120400>>29120435Used both of these on shit far bigger than any car. As already mentioned OP, you use the tool to load the taper of the balljoint's stud, then TAP on it, and repeat. Heat, soak, pressure and tap.You do not go full hammer of the gods and beat on it with a 20 pound sledge,or go max ugga-dugga with a 1" impact.
>>29120395I 4lb hammered, crowbared, pb blastered it for 3 hours, put it back together, then drove on it for a week before buying a screw separator. It then instantly came off, without having to use the separator at all. So just drive and hope it doesn't kill you.>>29120435These were the wrong shape for one of mine btw. Thats why they call them tie rod removers
>>29120465>Are you even using jackstands bro?Of course. I got jackstands, chocks, floor jack for back up and tire for back up im not fucking around>>29120533>>29120465>>29120455>>29120405What happens if i went ugga dugga on the stud and castle nut instead of hitting the side of the control arm and the stud has mushroomed out a bit cuz im a dumbass?
>>29120552Even if the thread is fucked on your ball joint tool (I think you could've probably positioned it so that you used the unfucked bit of the thread) you still would've been better off putting it back on with whatever preload it could muster so you could smack the tool with your hammer instead of smacking straight onto the ball joint thread.....
>>29120561I can still use the ball joint tool but yeah the tie rod stud i think i fucked it desu
>>29120395>ball jointI got bad news, bro . . .
>>29120604keep using pb blaster. use 2 hammers to smack both sides of the arm at the same time. if you can get something under pressure to jack the joint keep doing the 2 hammers. and the pb blaster sit and penetrate
>>29120544There's two different sizes. One for balljoints and one for tie rods. And there's also a tiny one for small tie rods.
