Most engine wear occurs at engine start when the engine components arent coated with oil. This can be fixed by having an additional electric oil pump that will work for few seconds before the engine cranks to oil up the components. Now i made the engine last twice as long. Has this been done before? Even in niche racing use?
Those exist, yes.
>>29125339Neat, i want to know more.
Google engine pre-lubrication system.
I don't want to wait a few seconds, I want to turn a key and fucking go.
>>29125338You don't need that. You could accomplish the same exact thing by having the ECU give you a bunch of dead revs before it fires the ignition. But normies would just think their car is having a hard time starting.
>>29125338But why do you want to deprive shareholders of automotive companies of the stock price gains they are entitled to?Just accept the start-stop system in your car in the name of "ecology" ,user.
>>29125338Doesn't even have to be electric.I dealt with an accumulator based pre-oiling system.Only electrical part was a solenoid valve. You hit the "start" button, and it dumps the charge of oil into the system before the engine has even begun to spin. Very simple.>>29125363>But why do you want to deprive shareholders of automotive companies of the stock price gains they are entitled to?This, gotta bump those quarterly numbers!
>>29125338>>29125342accusump is what you want
>>29125370>This, gotta bump those quarterly numbers! This sounds like something a typical CEO would say.
>>29125345It’s better to slowly drive off immediately than let the car idle and warm up after startup
>>29125338I've got just the right snake oil for you OP
>>29125338It doesn't even need a pump, it just accumulates oil pressure when the car is on and releases it with an electronic valve.
>>29125338There are tons of cars and trucks already with built in engine block warmers. You don't even need to pre-oil, just for the oil to be hot enough to near instantaneously lubricate everything.Just plug in your ram2500 on a timer to start heating up an hour before you get up for work.
If the oil quality is good, like group 4 synthetics, and you actually follow maintainance intervals, the oil will stick to the metal surfaces forming a thin flim for a good amount of time, providing some protection against cold starts.Other things you can do to reduce wear and tear is if you live in a state that doesn't have freezing temp or very very cold temp choose oil that's thinner at cold so it heats up quicker. Choosing oil filter that has a valve that let oil immediately flow through instead of needing to fill up entirely before it can flow through also significantly reduce wear. And of course, don't start your car and immediately take off, let ALL the fluids warm up a bit also helps dramatically. Modern ECUs have cold start modes in them they engage immediately to heat everything up to operating temperature as quick as possible. Start the car, go check your mailbox or give your windshield a quick wipe and your car will be ready.

>>29125338That seem to be only one aspect of the issue. The other is keeping the coolant, oil and block to normal temperature. Temperature changes how thick oil is and how easy for it to wet a surface, as well as warpping the block the pistol and cylinder sealing. The geometry problem allows fuel to blowby and mix in with lubricant on the looser section, and gall the metal on the tighter sides. Low temp also makes engine trying to inject more fuel to get more consistent ignition and heat up the chamber, making more soot and unburned fuel going pass the less optimal piston ring to contaminate the oil.Older gen prius used a thermo to hold hot coolant when they are drained during shutdown and pump it back during the start.
>>29125621They stopped making those display units because after sitting on the counter for about a year the Lucas side was more difficult to spin than the non treated side.
>>29125621Holy shit - the truckstop classic.
In push to start cars you can floor the gas pedal and push the button. The car will not start but it will turn over.
>>29125338That "most engine wear is on startup" oil ad is bullshit anywayMost engine wear comes from run time x load x rpm
>>29127519it's all relative. cold start could put say, as much wear as running an engine just 500 revs below redline for 5 mins straight
>>29125338Yes those systems exist, but the amount of wear is very small, and if it is "most" depends on how far you drive on an average trip. Add in the fact that most engines outlast the car the question as to if it is worth it is answered quite quickly.
>>29127526it's bullshitif it actually made a difference pre-start oiling would be a thing>b-b-b-but the manufacturers deliberately want to make the engine wear out!not all of them and not all of the time, so if it did actually make a difference we'd see some engines with pre-start oiling and everyone would remark "wow look how much longer that pre-start oiled engine lasts because of its pre-start oiling!".Not to mention the aftermarket companies who would be selling their pre-start oiling setups and showing you how much it improves engine wear.None of that happens because it's bullshit, some oil company put it in their ad for their super sticky snake oil once and everyone just repeats it.
>>29125377>This sounds like something a typical CEO would say.It is, because I've heard it from them and management, far too much.>"Cost of Living pay increase?", "You want the broken shop equipment replaced?" "We need an AC recovery machine?!". What is this, a charity ? You're here to make me money, not fix cars!Words spoken by a former employer. (Who is out of business, and deservedly so)
>>29125338Engine wear occurs at startup because your engine is cold you fucking mongloid. They design engines at operating temperature. All of your bearings, valves, pistons, rods etc are designed with your engine components being at xxx degrees. If they're colder than that, the tolerances are sloppy and it leads to significantly more wear. And they're not going to design an engine with proper tolerances at room temp because that would be retarded. It's not because your engine isn't coated in oil you fucking retard.
>>29125361Not the same. The engine turning is causing wear regardless of whether or not the ignition system is firing. This is talking about running the oil pump by itself to circulate oil to the top of the engine before starting to turn the engine internals.
>>29127803Do you ever shut the fuck upYou come in every thread like a hormonal woman with a sandy pussy. Grow the fuck up, you're in your 30s
>>29127803>If they're colder than thatOr hotter. Tolerances go both ways.Nb: I'm not disagreeing with you - although you are name-fagging wankoff - but this fag should be aware of the bigger picture. It doesn't matter which way you swing from optimal, shit goes out of whack.
>>29127849>You come in every thread like a hormonal woman with a sandy pussy. And somehow, in spite of that, you're the one who sounds like the yeasty bitch pmsing out the asshole.

>>29127856>>29127862I hate you both>>29127856NIGGER>>29127862NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER
>>29127852Obviously, but exceeding normal operating temperatures is pretty much never going to be the case when considering startup wear so it's not really worth mentioning in this discussion.
>>29127662>if it actually made a difference pre-start oiling would be a thingbut it does. that's why accusumps exist.OEMs don't add that because the added cost and complexity outweigh the benefits to *them*
>>29125338Been a thing since the 60s basically.Feels good to prime my engine with 40psi before every start up.
>>29125338you could find the fuse for the fuel and ignition and extend the wires and add a switch so you can just crank the motor a few times to preoil. plus then those switches are like a security lockout
>>29127662OIl companies gain exactly nothing if your car has an extra oil pump in it. You are still going to buy the oil from them at the exact same price and interval. It means nothing to them.
>>29125338My gf used to pour olive oil into the refill port before starting her car sometimes.
>>29128436was she italian?
>>29128299I have never in my life heard of someone fitting an accusump for pre-start oiling, it's always to prevent oil starvation.
>>29125621I know an idiot who uses this shit dude told me he can replace 75% of his oil with this shit and his honda shitbox sounds better now because of it, still sounds like a wet fart. He didn't stop to think if it's better than synthetic oil why wouldn't manufacturers recommend it to make more money at the stealership but he unironically also thinks the earth is flat and if he had a big enough camera he could take a picture of japan for north america. I see people who felate economy japanese cars as both low class and stupid because of this and more often than not I'm right.
>>29128425The ad from the oil company was for their super sticky magnetic snake oil which prevents all that start-up wear by sticking to the parts that need oiling bud.
>>29128450i'm sure there's some autist that got one for pre-lubing.
>>29125648Block heaters only heat the coolant and the residual oil sitting in the engine and oil cooler. The oil in the oil pan is still at -40 or whatever and it still takes a few seconds for the oil pressure to register. The block heater helps a lot but it's still brutal torture for the engine at extreme temps. >>29127515Even my 20 year old keyed vehicles tell you to do that when it's super cold out.
>>29128442No, Appalachian but grew up in Los Angeles so like white trash but also fake artsy.
>>29128484There are oil pan heaters as well.Really OP is wrong because engine low temp is what kills engines. Even sitting there letting your engine warm up is hard on the engine. If you do that five times a day then your engine will last a lot shorter than if you only warmed it up once that day. That's how cars that manage to reach 1 million miles are driven, they were started once during the morning and were simply ran all day at regular operating temps.
>>29128450All of Accusump have the added bonus of being a preOiler. Some guys use them as turbo oil feeds after shut down exe.
>>29125338Oil doesn't completely drain away into the sump. Everything stays lubricated. I'd argue constant idling and heat cycles (multiple short trips daily) are far worse.
>>29128527They can add whatever they want, why not? That's still not what ANYONE buys them for.
>>29128535Anon what the fuck are you talking about?
>>29128539Buddy I know who you are, I know you got an accusump because your LS engine has a shitty oil system and you put massive 315 tyres on your car so you can drive around cones in 2nd gear. Why are you pretending you put it on there for pre-start oiling?
>>29128532And you'd be right.
>>29128554>315s>2nd gearGuess you don't follow my channel.I haven't run 315s since Covid. The 295s are faster. Here's a pic from my last track day at the ridge Keep seething I guess.
>>29125361>dead revsYou'll still be faced with the same issue.Unlubricated friction taking place between metal surfaces.
>>29125492No it isn't don't listen to retard journalists that can't drive.
>>29125370>accumulator based pre-oiling systemI like that, provided that there are Failsafes to ensure proper charge.Either way works.Electric priming pumpHeck, even Air-based priming pump and starter
>>29127235It even looks worse in pic related.
>>29128527>after shut down exe.+1
>>29129269Yeah there are accumulators that are designed to continuously add oil in a turbo for about 5 minutes or so after shutdown. In a lot of race cars, the turbo oil feeds get super hot and if you don't continuously circulate oil; the oil will just nuke itself in the turbo bearings.
>>29129273It's funny how Industrial systems have utilized such relatively inexpensive and simple, wear saving Subsystems for a century, and yet, the domestic auto industry never implemented such (cost is the oft-used excuse).
>>29129264nta but this is in ase papers, you know like actual lab test, scientific papers
>>29129338>asesae
>>29128535accusumps for preoiling are popular on the m96 boxster and 911 forums
>>29125338>>29125361Hah, my carburetor's fuel filter check valve doesn't work properly so I ALWAYS have to crank for a few seconds before start.
>>29125492that makes no sense whatsoever.that bit of load isn't going to change anything while the engine warms up.
>>29129253Yeah bud I've seen your track day videos where you have to very gingerly let out the clutch on your downshifts because you never learned about heel-toe when you were driving around cones in 2nd gear.
>>29129264I listen to the manufacturer who made my engine and that's what they recommend.
>>29129363Why specifically the m96?Let me guess; it has some design flaw which the accusump bandaids?

>>29129439What kind of car do you drive?
>>29125338>Most engine wear occurs at engine start when the engine components arent coated with oil.If it's new enough, it starts out at the factory when they don't clean out all the swarf, or they don't believe in assembling engines correctly.
