people keep telling me "new cars" don't need oil changes every 3000 miles. I have a 2021 vehicle. How true or recommended is it to do it every 3000 miles or quarterly?

Follow the manufacturer's guidance book.

3k? Man I’ve been doing 5k since forever

k thanks

You can't really "over change" engine oil. If you got a modern goy engine with water oil and DI that dilutes that water oil with gas and you do a lot of short trips then you shouldn't wait until the recommended 10k miles. If you have a basic engine with normal 5w30 and you drive 2k miles a year then you probably don't need to change it every 3k miles. Unless you're 90.

new cars use very light oil. I would take the factory recommendation and cut it in half.

3k comes from a time when we used conventional oil and cars were built with insanely high manufacturing tolerances.

my rule of thumb is follow the manual or 5k interval, whichever is smaller, and always use full synthetic unless it specifically calls for conventional.

Anything with a turbo should do 3k oil changes.
>but the manufacturer recommends-
Anything with a turbo should do 3k oil changes.

Depends on your driving conditions. Lots of city? 5k. Lot of highway, 8-10k.

In this case you should follow the manufacturers recommended time interval. Generally 6mo-1y

3000 miles or 1 year for the oil and filter

I had Mercedes C-Class with a V6 that called for 10,000 mile oil change intervals. I changed it every 3,275 or if I was bored. Lasted me to 235,000 miles with zero mechanical issues up till the end, and that was because my gf drove it with only 10%~20% of it's oil capacity for a few months.

>much tolerances
Lies. Some older engines were built with finer tolerances than todays engines. Extended ocis are for the manufacturers good goy score.

(((Agreed)))

On any new car the oil life monitor will tell you when to change the oil, on older cars I usually do 5-7k oil change intervals, but have sometimes let it go to like 10k with a couple top ups between changes

I do 3k for turbo, 5k for N/A. I wouldn't go more than 7.5k on anything.
People have been saying this "modern synth oils are magic" and "modern engines are built better" BS for at least 30 years.
It's a simple thing you can do to prolong your engine's life. If you care or drive hard, do roughly what I do. Otherwise follow the manufacturer's schedule. Though some are recommending 15k or 21k oil changes now - don't follow that, 10k is probably a reasonable maximum for your average person.

I’ve been doing 10k OCIs on my e39 m54 for like 360k miles and the engine hasn’t even had the vanos fix done, it runs amazing still, this is running mobil 1 euro car formula, I also do 10k OCIs on a turbo VW Jetta, and 7k OCIs on my dodge Cummins which is coming up on 400k~ miles soon, the speedo hasn’t worked for like a year

That's great, but it wouldn't be me.
I've got one car, I redline it almost every time I drive, and I don't do road trips anymore so a change every 4-5k is not a big deal and I do it gladly.
