Anything I should know before buying one of these? I love their body shape
>>
>>29127998
Do you really love the body shape, or is that the best BMW you can afford? Be honest.

Get a STRAIGHT 6 one

Make sure the cooling system has been refreshed
>>
>>29127998
That's a really confusing picture, the shadow and JPEG artifacts make it look like it's missing the trunk
Also get a STRAIGHT 6 one

wagons are heavy
the wheels have 74.1 center bore
they are more susceptible to rust than later cars
that's it
>>
>>29127998
You’ll go poor maintaining it.
Just get a Honda or Toyota and get laid.
>>

how many e39s have you had?

My E39 is cheaper to maintain than my gs350 fsport was

Sure it is, darkie.

Check for rust on the jacking points, arches, inside the fuel door, and under the seal for the boot/trunk. I'd also personally try to aim for an M52 car rather than the M54 cars, as the M54 can start to suffer from weak oil rings over the 100,000 mile mark and will eventually burn oil. The intake design of the M52 is also a little less obtrusive, which makes wrenching a tad easier. If you want a V8, then make sure that motherfucker has had the timing chain guides replaced, as they're infamous for disintegrating; the valves and pistons having a shotgun marriage and bumping uglies may be fun for them, but not for you. If the guides have been done, then there's really not much else that goes bad on them. Beyond that it's your typical 90's BMW bullshit of making sure the screens and clusters don't have dead pixels, and that the brittle plastics haven't snapped anywhere.

This sad fact cannot be overstated.

Keep doorstops around for when the window regulators fail after a few dozen times of use. Be ready to replace every part of the (plastic) cooling system. Get ready to have to change wheel speed sensors as a regular maintenance item just.. because.
You'll have a great driving, comfortable car with just enough road feel to be engaging once that's all sorted. The I6s also have better steering than V8s and are arguably much more dependable. Try and shoot for a 528i/530i (M52/M54 respectively) if you're American, or whatever you can get if you're elsewhere I guess.
>t. former E39 528i owner
>>
>>29127998
Yeah just get a straight 6 the V8s are a pain in the ass. It will have a lot of annoying electrical gremlins and it will leak oil. Mostly they will just nickel and dime you but it's not like bankruptcy level bad. I guess they're fine. I prefer the E34, they are simpler cars. Oh and the will cooling system needs replacing every like 100k miles probably bc it's all plastic.
>>
>>29127998
Overall pretty good and really good interior build quality, but absolutely get an inline-6 and not a V8, those V8s were nightmares. The 530i will probably be the best choice by far but you can settle for a 528i.

inferior to audi in every way

audi is inferior to literally everything, even volkswagen itself (being that audi is volkswagen with a markup).

>real audi
Admitting the majority of Audi's aren't real Audi's and it takes effort to find a real one is a strange defense strategy.
>>

I see a fair amount of both E39s and W210s getting around but I never see Audis from the 90s. They did not hold up at all

A little sad honestly, 90s Audi had some cool designs but they've absolutely vanished. I used to see a lot of the 90s era A6 but they started dropping off in the late 10s, a bit of a shame since I liked the back of it and how 90s it looks but they disappeared overnight in my area around 2015.
>>
>>29128545
my guess is cash for clunkers, same as how a lot of 90s gm turds also vanished suddenly around the end of the 2000s.
>>
>>29128529
aren't these the ones that use a steering box because the steering rack won't fit with the v8? wonder how the road feel and response is with these compared to the racks
>>
>>29127998
Stay away from these, absolute money pit for every little return
>>
>>29128558
Not as good but at the same time, I don't really give a shit about driving dynamics that much in a pigfat luxury saloon. That being said, I wouldn't get a V8 car because the engines are just maintenance intensive.
>>
>>29128558
Pretty nice according to a friend that has one, but the V8 is another story.
