American traffic looked so cool back then. What happened? This was only 50 years ago!
>>
>>29132272
inhaling leaded exhaust fumes is not cool, broski
>>
Everyone got fat, nogs started chimping out en masse so cars had to be modified to not hurt them when you hit them, uhhh what else, everyone needs their tick tock and instant gram video games at all times so tv screens are mandatory
>>
>>29132272
Well for starters, everyone drove traditional american cars. When the japs entered the scene and the oil crisis happened, front wheel drive slop became the standard, and american manufacturers pivoted away from the "traditional" american car design, which was RWD body on frame, to unibody FWD.

Asian car manufacturers sloppified the industry and now everyone just makes FWD crossovers. The first popular crossover, was the CR-V/Rav4. cars had more character back then. they were more engaging to drive, too. they were super modular because every performance variant was based on the regular civilian variant. the Pony car and Muscle car redefined what an enthusiast vehicle could be and they were everywhere.

Now people call front wheel drive with a wing and some added boost in an already rung out 3 or 4 cylinder a """sports""" car.
>>
>>29132285
Forgot to add my addendum for the pic related. Only the rival of the new Camaro with a manual can save us. everything else is gay, transversely mounted, and too expensive.
>>

Look at these three guys.
>>
>>29132285
FWD was taken up starting in the 80s because it had a lot of advantages
>reduced weight
>safer to drive
>more interior space
>cheaper manufacturing cost
>better fuel mileage
>better traction in bad weather

The one downside to FWD is somewhat reduced reliability as the front end has more weight over it than a RWD car, but this was outweighed by its many advantages.
>>
>>29132289
even the VW Beetle was RWD.
>>
>>29132285
People bought Japanese cars because they were better engineered, more reliable and cheaper than shit old American trash the big 3 had been churning out because they took the American Market for granted.
>>
>>29132303
well you got your better engineered front wheel drive crossovers. no point in bitching now. the industry headed where Japan took us.
>>
>>29132289
For me, it's either the Alfa Spider or that sweet straight six Volvo
>>
Man, old American iron never gets some love. Sure, they weren't well engineered, well built, and at times weren't even very reliable, but they were beautiful cars. Maybe it has to do with the fact that many of those automobile designers were mostly art students looking for a job then actual engineers. I don't know, they had have an actual sovl, those old American shitboxes.
>>
>>29132319
ironically most of what is left over from that era is american. none of the better engineered japanese stuff survived outside museums.
>>
>>29132320
>ironically most of what is left over from that era is american. none of the better engineered japanese stuff survived outside museums.

There's lots of vintage Japanese cars in California. They just didn't survive anywhere with road salt.
>>
>>29132272
i like how everyone could see like five cars ahead because almost every car was basically a greenhouse
>>
>>29132319
>Man, old American iron never gets some love
says who? boomers been dickriding those things for as long as i've been alive.
>>
>>29132323
the West Coast was also an import hotbed in general. in the Midwest until well into the 80s almost all cars were domestics.
>>
>>29132323
The oldest unrestored daily driver Japanese car I've seen on the road here in California was a 1975 Honda Civic. Nothing beyond the the mid 70s.

>>29132325
I meant 4chan. I should've clarified it better. Boomies don't count, they wear extremely thick rose tinted glasses, so I can't take them seriously.
>>
>>29132323
Japan does not and has never given a shit about rustproofing because most of the country outside Hokkaido doesn't get real winter weather.
>>
>>29132320
That's just numbers and restoration projects, nothing more. Those cars weren't better engineered, it's just that it's possible to find one that has a decent frame and you just pay whatever it costs to restore it after that point.

Arguably the bit about how those old cars had thicker metal means that stripping all the surface rust doesn't matter as much, but that's about it as far as "longevity" goes.
>>
>>29132323
>>29132331
more so, how many of these "vintage japanese" cars are just grey market imports? i'm starting to see a resurgence in A80 Poopras and FD rx7s. but whenever I look inside, it's a RHD import. usually the cars that were originally sold in america have long disintegrated.
>>
>>29132333
they don't use salt there anyway. salt is mostly a Midwest/Northeast thing and it's a destructive, evil entity.
>>
>>29132343
I think that RX7s were all just junked. I think their owners never held on to them. Just what I think.
>>
>>29132343
in that case it may be more because the JDM versions are not choked with smog hardware like the USDM ones so they're more desirable to drive
>>
>>29132347
there's a Gen 1 RX-7 not far from where i live, i see it parked regularly in this one spot when i go by.
>>
>>29132348
you can just engine swap them. no one would go through the trouble of dealing with RHD for a different engine. they do it because it's the only way to actually own the car at all at this point.
>>
Vintage small cars in general didn't survive well. This is also true of American cars; most surviving 70s stuff are land yachts and trucks, there's no Pintos or Chevettes left.
>>
>>29132358
I've never seen a chevette but pintos can still easily be found on facebook market place and not even for a lot of money.
>>

if you use Google search you can find vintage Japanese wheels for sale and they're definitely USDM models with LHD and 5 mph bumpers, but as i expected these are all in Sun Belt states as none of these cars survived more than three winters in the Midwest
>>
>>29132289
weird to think that driving a 1980s shitbox in current day traffic is like driving a 1930s shitbox in 1970s traffic
it's a 40 year gap....
>>
>>29132363
I think an Omni might be worse because it's FWD and you can't V8 swap and make a track monster out of it like those others.
>>
>>29132365
Bring a trailer isn't a good representation for what's commonly out there. it's hoarders selling cars they've almost never driven to begin with. how often do you see a 70s civic or corolla on facebook market place for example?

City planning has nothing to do with enjoyability of an era of cars. Those cars are, in fact, not bumper to bumper, btw, they're just all driving down the road together. The fact that cars are seen easily changing lanes shows this.

I saw a Corolla of similar year and color on the road in bumfucksville New York quite a few years ago in a state of wear that says it was being regularly driven. Ironically the only vehicle there that has stuck around and remained relatively close to it's roots is the Mustang. Basically everything else has been killed off and replaced with transverse-engined crossovers, if not the full size pickups and SUVs that have essentially replaced all those full size sedans and family wagons respectively.
>>29132325
I don't know, boomers have always been the most vocal about old American wagons and sedans (double so for "post" sedans) being entirely worthless, garbage cars worth nothing other than a night at a demolition derby regardless of the fact that the two door models were the same thing underneath. It's mostly younger folk I see willing to appreciate and drive the unloved sedans, if not Europeans that import them.
>>29132343
With how much prices are being inflated (200k mile A80 Supras have sold for $100k before) it just makes a lot more sense that you're able to import a JDM model, for cheaper still, that not only has the meme appeal and RHD, but typically has a mere fraction of the mileage an American example might have, plus you know it's been autistically cared for since their testing is usually so strict.

the luxury truck actually started with the Jeep Wagoneer and during the 70s trucks were becoming a little more luxurious instead of a bare bones work vehicle. the 7th gen Suburban was the first one that was a habitable DD and not a crude, rough-riding work truck. it gained popularity in the Midwest during the 70s as preferable to the full-sized 71-76 GM wagons.

I get they might've sold many pickups, but like I said it seemed like they would go to people that either would use them or that lived in the sticks. I'm not a boomer so I wasn't there, but in any old pictures of traffic (which, yeah, are usually in cities) you can usually count the amount of trucks on a single hand in contrast to the dozens of other cars in traffic.
Compare that to today, where you'll have yuppies in cities driving around Raptors, ZR2s and Denalis (that have never towed/hauled/been off road) as if they're "personal luxury" cars.

The only ones that look remotely similar are those by the same manufacturer. For instance, there are 5(!) 68-70 Dodge B-bodies easily visible, along with multiples of other siblings from other manufacturers such as the 3 67-68 Mustangs, 3 Caprices, and at least 2 DeVilles easily visible without even doing an exhaustive search and categorization. What's mildly interesting is how closely they're grouped by model years.

vgh... So many trucks and SUVs!
Find some images of a general store in some "single Main Street" flyover town from the 60s-70s and I'm sure it'll be nothing but pickup trucks parked around, sure, but I'll also bet those dudes also almost never went into town.

Lol, you gonna learn me something or not? Read your post again (since you enjoy reading), you're the one acting like a redditor by claiming to be all holier-than-thou with nothing to back it up. Try again.

this, everything was so much better just look at these cars the cars are so pretty i love car and sitting in car and pretty car

well my mother is 72 and was there. she said that yes in the 60s pickup trucks were Jed Clamplett shit and not commonly found in suburban neighborhoods.
>>
>>29132549
I think the dense model year figure has to do with LA becoming the suburban city it was at basically that exact time. You'd be able to get a good job there but at the same time you'd feel compelled to buy a car.
>>
>>29132515
they use salt in the UK even though only Scotland gets real winters

A source for what? you not being from that timeline and not knowing what millions of people did with their cars? this is a fact. so you telling me what they did despite not knowing them would be revisionist history. Saying "they only bought what they needed" is made up bullshit with no evidence. me telling you that is not is not me making an equally wild claim.
>>
>>29132557
ummm no sweaty that doesnt fit the narrative, those car's are just objectively good and there is no other reason anyone bought one??
>>
>>29132510
the Suburban was definitely a better family hauler than a B-body wagon. easier to see out of, maneuver, and had tons more interior space.
>>
>>29132551
>why do you think people restore them
People restore anything, and trucks aren't huge in the restoration scene, btw.
>lmao
>lmao
Retard.
>still waiting for that data documenting the lives of what millions of people supposedly did and didn't do with their trucks.
Right, because you're the only one claiming that in the first place. Bits like the 70s being the biggest decade for car sales but a minor footnote for truck sales are inconvenient truths to you.
>>
>>29132272
Man the Mustang really was tiny.
>>
>>29132552
Those are all ivory tower egghead liberals, not real Americans.
>>
>>29132562
They didn't sell a lot of trucks because trucks actually last. And people weren't all pederasts and actually observed Jesus so the generation was mostly the same age, since they only had sex once they were mature. So they didn't need to buy new trucks every year. The family truck would last decades.
>>
>>29132560
You seem upset, what I said has nothing to do with morality or whatever is obviously just your political identity.
>>
>>29132566
What a whole load of gay shit to justify your >2020 commuter truck purchase.

that's a goddamn spider

>People restore anything, and trucks aren't huge in the restoration scene

say what? vintage trucks are always popular. all 90s cars are long gone from the road but i still see 30 year old Rangers, F-series, and Silverados around.
>>
>>29132567
Your so retarded and obviously a flaming homo and 100% foreverially a pedophile. Trucks are the only truely American vehicle and conveyance. Kill yourself libshit coastie.
>>
>>29132562
>People restore anything, and trucks aren't huge in the restoration scene, btw.
why didn't they restore all those better engineered front wheel drive japanese cars? why is that one retard only posting wikipedia and auction images instead of facebook market place listings? apparently people don't restore shit they don't care about. and people cared about their trucks not to just throw them away like you would a work tool.
>because you're the only one claiming that in the first place.
no, i'm claiming that you're making shit up. this isn't the same thing as me telling you how people back then bought cars.
>Bits like the 70s being the biggest decade for car sales but a minor footnote for truck sales
people switched from cars to SUVs and crossovers. truck sales stayed comparatively the same. already debunked.
>>
>>29132571
You are an unironic closested faggot.
>>
>>29132572
>people switched from cars to SUVs and crossovers. truck sales stayed comparatively the same. already debunked.
F-150 sales were 40% of what they are today.
>>
>>29132573
Trucks are king. You're a pedophile. Keep driving that altima, nigger.
>>
>>29132558
Poland gets salted out the ass too despite there not really being any real winters for some time now. As soon as it gets slightly colder they start chucking this shit everywhere.
>>
>>29132576
No, you're an unironic closested faggot. You went from being upset that trucks get called out in a vintage car thread for being non-existent to screaming pedophile shit. You're unambiguously the thing you're screaming about, because all you do is trying to get ahead of the conversation rather than dispute it.
>>
>>29132575
then there were 40% less car buyers. the market share of trucks hasn't changed much.
>>
>>29132581
You're a pedophile and you probably put salt on your driveway because you're a retarded non. Enjoy your ivory tower, faggot pedo. Surely nothing has EVER gone wrong with big shiny towers that are an affront to God...
>>
>>29132570
Those aren't restorations, those are just those cars still on the road.

And that's not a truck thing, it's just certain 90s cars from certain brands that left the road today. You still exactly as many rangers on the road as you do Chrysler minivans from the same era.
>>
>>29132583
You are an actual pedophile because you keep screaming about it constantly.

Nobody has forgotten that this is about the fact that you're upset that trucks were a rarity.
>>
>>29132586
Trucks aren't "a rarity" you pony obsessed weirdo. They are the one true American vehicle.
>>
>>29132582
>the decade that saw the largest total units of cars made had 40% less buyers
uh huh, so you don't know how math works

Also lol @ your graph, it literally says the majority of SUV sales are large SUVs and not Crossovers.
>>
like i said, it was a weird thing that in the 70s, Dodge pickup trucks were mostly fleet rather than retail, but Dodge sold a lot more retail vans while Ford and Chevy vans went more to fleet sales.
>>
>>29132590
>aren't
We know, we're talking about the 70s, you're talking about today, while strangely screaming pedophile every chance you get. I wonder why that is.
>>
>>29132591
>>the decade that saw the largest total units of cars made had 40% less buyers
do you think america had a three hundred million population back in the fucking 70s? there were less people to buy vehicles, so there were less F150 sales. the people who bought cars switched to SUVs and crossovers. less than 20% of all vehicles on the road were trucks back in the 70s and there are less than 20% of trucks on the road today.

the only thing that has changed in all of this, is the invention of reddit telling people they don't know how they live their lives.
>says the majority of SUV sales are large SUVs and not Crossovers.
I said "SUV and Crossovers" nigglet. I didn't say one or the other. people switched out of sedans for these two vehicle segments.
>>
>>29132598
Go back to /mlp/ you retarded non. Trucks built this country and no amount of chinkmade photos of LA traffic will change that.
>>
>>29132600
>chink

This is the best this pedophile can do
>>
>>29132599
>do you think america had a three hundred million population back in the fucking 70s?
No, dipshit? Is this supposed to matter?

THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CARS ACTUALLY SOLD PEAKED IN THE 1970S. DEAL WITH IT.

Despite this, trucks were a smaller portion of sales.

America is too big for stats to work the same they do in eurocuck land. 80% here is not the same as 80% in goymany.
>>
>>29132582
This graph is so fucking stupid. All the lines don't even take up half the height for 2020. Do you seriously expect me to believe that fewer cars have been sold overall in 2020 than in 1975?

yea, otherwise your retarded notion of F150 sales being down 40% while their comparative numbers stayed the same between the total amount of vehicles on the road doesn't actually mean anything.
>THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CARS ACTUALLY SOLD PEAKED IN THE 1970S
Nope, we actually sell more cars today. unless you are strictly talking about "sedans" in which case, no shit? they crossover and SUVs weren't a thing yet.
>trucks were a smaller portion of sales.
uh by what? a percentage or two? they were less than 20% of vehicles on the road and they remain that way today.

Look at the graph you posted, retard. The lines go down.
>>
>>29132632
"cars" meaning all vehicles on the road, dipshit. you're talking strictly about sedans.
>>
>>29132636
The. Lines. Go. Down. What do you not understand about that? Your graph makes no sense. Did we sell more cars today than in 1975 or not? According to what you posted, we sold less than then.
>>
>>29132638
>the line for SEDANS goes down
>the line for SUVs and Crossovers go up
>the total number of vehicles sold today has gone up with the total population

>>29132639
Do you even understand how large America is? The way (((you))) use stats in the EU won't work here.
