Koni or bilstein shocks for an NA?
>>
>>29135336
How about black OEM base model dampers and black OEM base model springs.
>>
>>29135338
Previous owner put garbage coilovers on and I just want something nice but sporty. Besides, original springs are long gone
>>
>>29135340
>Besides, original springs are long gone
Go to the dealer and buy the stuff. You are supporting Mazda. The black dampers ride the best but nobody will tell you that.
>>
>>29135336
There is no magic shock for NA or NB to start off, it's not the worst suspension setup in the world but it just isn't very good either. There just isn't much travel.

Bilsteins don't work well for the miata, it ruins the character imo. Maybe they can be revalved or something but they always felt way way too firm. It would actually be kinda pleasant on a nice road (but firm, like you added psi to your tires), but then you'd have a small dip or two in the road and BAM, you'd feel a crash even with stiff springs.

Koni yellows are... better. I could see running these with lowering springs as stockish shocks just won't hold up to the heavier springs but it's still a little too harsh for my tastes. Adjustable damping but for a DD who the fuck wants to mess with damping.

Now Koni Special Actives are particularly interesting, the damping tightens up when you're doing low frequency things (braking, cornering, normal fun car things) but loosens up when you hit potholes and such. Not perfect still but it's about as good as it gets if you just want a comfy daily driver. These don't work with lowering springs. I would probably run these if I had $600 to blow.

Also just to add, lowering the car is retarded as lowering it anymore than an inch and you can't even jack the thing up without ramps or wood boards. Stock is genuinely lovely if you don't have intentions of doing timed events like autox or track use.
Also worth telling you if you are looking for stock springs, Mazda changed the ride height a few times. 90-93 is the lowest, 94-95 is maybe half an inch higher, 96-97 sits another extra .5-inch higher.
>>
>>29135383
I couldn't fit a jack under my current sedan or my Miata at stock height and it was low profile long reach. I always have to add a 2x4 or something close to the front wheels

What's the deal with these plastic disconnects on NB fuel filters? My NA8 just had hose clamps, I got in there and boom - plastic disconnects built into the fuel lines. Picrel, like the disconnect in red, but for the 2 hoses on the fuel filter behind it.
I don't want to break them with pliers and can only get one tab pushed with my fingers, apparently there's a fuel filter disconnect tool for like $5, anyone have experience?
>>
File: unnamed.jpg (8 KB, 256x192)

>>29135464
Found picrel. At least if I break a clip the fuel line fitting will still be fine, there's just not a lot of room to press on the clips and have the other arm in there pulling the line at the same time.
>>
>>29135464
They started using these in the mid-late 90s across a ton of cars. Just get the disconnect tool.
>>
>>29135464
If they're what I think they are, I have them on my Suzuki. I used broken pieces of a plastic pen lid jammed in beside the pipe to remove mine.

If the car lives on the street, honestly, just go back to stock bro. I've messed with my car so much over the years and honestly if I could do it all over again i'd put it all back stock.
>>
>>29135383
I have the Koni Special Actives on my NB on OEM 04/05 Mazdaspeed springs. FM will tell you this combination doesn't work but I love them. It rides great, soaks up bumps well, and you can feel them tighten up on the longer sweeping turns like highway overpasses/clover leaves. I would absolutely buy them again.

Driving behind tractor-trailers on the interstate is dangerous and on low-speed roads with stoplights like your example it's no different than driving behind any other slow car.

>Driving behind tractor-trailers on the interstate is dangerous
That's what they want you to think, they want you ass-to-mouth in the "fast lane". They want you to accept 0 braking distance as the norm. Just remember that if the 18 wheeler simply hits the brakes a little too hard it's automatically logged to his permanent driving record and his insurance quadruples, they can't do unannounced lane changes as well they get in trouble.
>>
Safety pocket
>>
>>29136010
You can maintain a safe distance behind any vehicle in any lane.
>but people will cut in
Only if your lane is moving faster than the other lane. There's nothing wrong with driving slow with a safe following distance; stop pretending you discovered some secret driving technique. If you're maintaining ~20 miata-lengths at 60 mph you're about at the 2.5-3 second following distance typically recommended for normal conditions.
You are welcome to deliberately drive behind or alongside big trucks but if you ever see a tire explode at highway speeds you will decide not to do it anymore. Just warning you.

I guess my confusion was because some cars didn't have those reinforced and you can bend your frame. Something about the chassis designs
>>

Instead what I do is drive just in front of it, just fast enough so it cant catch me, and when it starts overtaking other lorries, it will cause a pile up behind it, and the road will just clear up ahead for me.
>>
>>29136391
I will slow down before I get to the next lorry so it tries to overtake me too, lengthening the amount of time it takes the lorry to overtake,

Bigger hold up for goyim behind it, more highway bliss for me

You cant follow too closely the safety pocket isn't directly behind the 18 wheeler you have to be like at least 10 miatas away, then it's safu.

The rf was riding the nas bumper hard as fuck and then did this gay ass steering wheel jerk to go around him, keep in mind nobody is even around. so he whips around and zooms away without saying hi to the na which is what you're supposed to do. Anyone ever swapped a rav4 engine into their Miata? Seems simple enough they're both 4 cyls.
>>
>>29139923
You'd have an easier time swapping in an ND2 engine, the A25A-FKS is only ever put in FWD cars so there isn't really anywhere to bolt motor mounts to it on either side of the block, their engine mount is on the very front in front of the belts and then the rest are all on the transmission. You'd probably also have to make your own wiring harness to connect it to a universal engine computer of some kind, assuming one supports its cam and crank tone wheel profiles out of the box.

People who swap non-Mazda engines often choose the GM LS or the Honda K-Series. They're proven swaps with information available. If you wanted to swap something really fucking weird like a Rav4 or a Rolls-Royce engine, you're on your own.

The Rover/Buick V8 weighs somewhere around 170kg fully dressed, so better balance than an LS swap, if less powerful as a result.

Picked up a stock NA8 with about 45000 miles. Do I modify it or leave it alone?
I can't figure out if this is a survivor or a blank canvas.
On one hand a spirited driver toy may be nice, on the other maybe Mazda engineers knew best
>>
>>29140169
45k miles? Nice. The decision is entirely up to you, your wants, and your budget.
I recommend restoring anything that needs restoring, then getting used to the car. You should know what you want to change or improve, if anything.
Short of spending $4k+, you're only getting power out of a timing advance and or going catless (even then we're talking ~5 hp). Maybe a VVT head swap but that's likely at least a grand all said and done.
Sway bars are cheap and good, but will likely change the understeer/oversteer dynamic which could be dangerous if you're a nooblet at RWD cars (I don't know if you are or aren't).
>>
>>29140169
Skip the turbo/power mods
Maybe do upgraded shocks or coilovers if you aren't pleased with how it corners
Maybe do sway bars if you feel you have too much body roll
Besides that, good tires and maybe motor mounts. Exhaust/headers don't do anything worth a damn, neither does a timing advance, at least not enough of a difference to run premium

Anything that makes it handle better will likely have the inverse effect on comfort. A nice tight stock NA is honestly a blast to drive

Finally my brothers transmission rebuild shitshow is complete and out of the garage. Now my miata can finally get some love. Some exhaust work, a refresh of the lanolin under coating, maybe an oil change while I have it in the air though I only did it 2000 miles ago. Who's to say

>Maybe the market is just old boomers who
No the ND is 100% marketed towards incel zoomers and failed normies, this is a complete departure from their original target audience, the boomer. It's a great car but the 50% fake grille, fake back window on the rf and the fake sunroof as well as the angry chineese headlights are not boomer core they are something else.

>>
>>29141098
>I pretty much only see people 50+ driving the ND.
Doesn't matter at all and that's called your subjective exp. Mazda themselves discussed how they did market research and found that the Miata had a reputation of being "feminine" so they had to swing in the complete opposite direction and go full incel zoomer mode to appeal to insecure retards, hence the black wheels on every trim, no cool colors and angry chinkshit lights as well as the fake roof, windows and fake grille.
Your boy dave coleman discussed this shit and theres multiple articles about it. Hopefully they come back to their senses for the NE and make a car fit for a white man.

>>
>>29141274
>the poorfag argument
What does that have to do with fake grille window and sunroof?
>>
>>29140987
Mmm delicious

Only reason I am sticking with 5 speed is I drove 2 of the 6 speeds and the shifter felt worse than my 5 speed. Maybe they never rebuilt the shifter but it definitely has a lot less "snickity" when going into gear.

Plus if I went 6 speed it would have to be MSM trans with the circlip mod done, and at that point just put a real 6 speed that can handle power at that point...

I have some poly diff bushings brand new I am getting rid of soon, I have mazda motorsports rubber bushings.

What's the consensus on 1.6 vs 1.8 in the NAs?
>>
>>29141810
some people say the 1.6 is "livelier" but having driven both, that's cope. 1.8 all the way
>>
>>29141810
1.6 revs higher and feels slightly more whimsical. Keyword FEELS
1.8 indeed has more power but it lost something in the process. Exhaust note sounds kinda lackluster, feels ever so slightly heavier and it's noticeably less eager to rev.
>>29141851
Honestly pretty accurate. I put a lightweight flywheel on my NA8 and it mostly brought back the feel of the NA6 but it's still a bit too much torque if you want to wind it out on public roads.
Foot to the floor in a 1.6: "oh I'm only going 60 in a 45"
Foot to the floor in a 1.8: "oh fuck I'm doing 75 in a 45"

>>29141810
I prefer the feel of my 92NA6 over my 94NA8. It feels more sporty to drive. Less torque means I work the car more at road speeds. NA6 all the way.
The NA8 is more powerful though and a better long distance cruiser for it.
This is my long held opinion. I may be eccentric and you are totally welcome to ignore me, but this remains my opinion

>>29141854
Sorry about that. I was consolidating my thoughts.
>>
>>29141855
I definitely agree, if you're doing a lot of trips I could easily see those extra 200ccs helping keep revs down yet having torque for passing.
Neither are bad, just I think as the NA matured they had to make it ever so slightly more livable/address complaints to keep sales up. Less buzzy engine and the fact they kept raising the suspension on the NA because people likely complained it was too low.

Americans (especially at the time) just want to stick a car in a high gear, floor it, and expect it to move quickly, making as little noise as possible. Then again the 1.8 came out in other markets too so my analysis is likely wrong too, idk

1.6 feels like shit, barely has enough for powerslides, and sounds like bees in a can.
1.8 feels the minimum of acceptable and sounds deeper. My NB 1.8 has the same 7k redline as NA6s.
I've had miatas 12-13 years, the lack of power is the biggest issue and 1.8s are much better to drive than the NA6.
That said, I'd rather an NA6 over most cars, I'm not saying that it's shit. 1.8s do over a second quicker to 0-60, if you want to kick the rear out then you want that added power.
>>
>>29141810
1.6 is way more pure
