It's time we bring it back.

no thanks I'm good
>>
>>29134635
Isn't this on f350s and 18 wheelers?
>>
>>29134635
TTB is actually pretty fucking based on 1/2 ton and lighter stuff... I like monobeam axles on my 3/4, one ton, and up stuff though.
>>
>>29134635
how about torsion bars and live rear axles for cars again
>>
>>29134635
t. big tire
>>
>>29134635
is this that death wobble shit
>>
>>29135237
no, jeeps do that with normal solid front axles

This is TIB and it is awesome.

>>29134635
This is TTB and it SUCKS. Good luck keeping it in alignment after 100k. Have fun replacing those inner u-joints. Fuck this thing

God uses TTB.
Alignment isnt a big deal. Literally loosen a bolt and rotate the cam. It took me longer to type this reply than align a TTB

U-joint replacement is a little "involved" but just dont buy trash and youre fine. How often do you replace the same u-joint? I rebuilt the front end once and if i have to do it a second time in my lifetime im OK with that.

Would this offset 1 wheel to make the wheels non square? Like wouldn't 1 wheelbase be longer than the other?

Welcome to my rabbit hole.

Twin I Beam were original "equal length".
Then in 1980 Ford released a 4wd version. In order to have driveshaft clearance iy was redesigned to "un-equal length". They used unequal beams for both 2wd and 4wd to use the same chassis.

You can kind of see how the passenger beam stops short so it doesnt interfere with the driveshaft to the front/driver beam when you compare the unmoujyed beams of my previous pic.

Original setup with forged radius arms
>>
>>29137420
Oh why is this good?
>>
>>29137438
longer travel than ifs 2wd/4wds, better ride than straight-axle 2wd/4wds at the cost of being slightly quirk chungus, they're lethally scary to drive in reverse at-speed, my not-knower friend looked at mine after backing into a parking space and told me I must have a broken ball joint the way the wheel cambered in.

A-arms "give ground" (thats the actual technical term) when articulating brcause the pivot point is near the wheel. So when the passenger side suspension compresses the passenger side of the frame "dips" towards the ground.
Because the i beam pivot point is on the opposite side of the truck the frame simply "rocks" to the side instead of dropping.
Beams are also extremely robust and simple.

Class 8 baja (the big boys before Trophy Truck was introduced) was dominated by I beams. Because its a 2wd class they would run E-300 2wd beams (1 ton vans) because they are massive solid forged beams or gutted 4wd Traction Beams because theyre boxed plate steel that are easily modified.

As for the wheelbase question- the beams are angled slightly so the spindles are in the same location.
The front beam is angled slightly rearward and the back beam is angled slightly forward.

this, replaced almost every fucking front end component on my xj in high school, and death wobble eventually crept back in each time, caused by something different.
>>
It's really the only affordable 4wd solution for anyone other than a full on race truck. but that's a pretty small market.

no

I wouldnt mind driving a TIB just to see what it is like. TTB, ehhh not too sure about that. Gimme a straight axle at that point.

Neat, why aren't they more common on production vehicles anymore? Too expensive for parts and installation? Wouldn't that go perfect for $100k+ trucks like pickups, escalades, and range rovers? Softer ride and stronger off road capability, right?

>too expensive
Actually cheap as fuck to produce. Its 2 pivot points per side.
Originals were forged I beams and radius arms.
Then they went to stanped sheèt metal radius arms and later cast I beams
>its still rare as fuck to snap a cast beam
They eat tires. I wont defend that. Its just how it is. Rotate your tires.
They get "squirrely" on washboards and you can flip from oversteer to understeer in a hurry if youre not familiar with your truck.

On blank asphalt it feels like a Cadillac.
In the Baja 500 it's a time breaker Cadillac.

Robby Gordon had to modify the everlasting fuck out of a chevy to win baja to get the travel out of a chevy (pic) when the Ford trucks had it with stock suspension points >>29135508
