Malaise era didn't have the negative effect on trucks that it did on cars. >Power was down, but the engines still had good torque and lasted a long time >less emissions equipment than cars>durable, rugged, simple design>huge open engine bays for ease of maintenance>strong 4x4 systemsmalaise era trucks are based

>>29141682Were they exempt?>>29141695i wouldn't trust any of those numbersin fact i bet only the 460 had over 200hp
>No weightsKinda irrelevant how much horsepower a vehicle has if you don't know how heavy it is.
>>29141706there's no way the weight difference can be that great. one may weigh 100 lbs more than the other tops.
>>29141706>>29141708they're all in the 4000 lb ballpark
>>29141711The average is in the 3,000s range; some heavy duty 4x4 models can exceed 5,000 pounds.
>>29141696you can clearly see it doesn't have the huge girder bumpers on passenger cars of the period
>>29141714that's as bulky as a 74-79 Lincoln Continental
>>29141668Dodge trucks of the period tended to be mostly fleet vehicles and they didn't sell so many retail ones.
>>29141668Don't forget this one.
>>29141721nobody remembers their pickups for some reason. not sure i've even seen one of these IRL.
>>29141718now compare their engine bays
>>29141727no smog stuff but the right is i presume a 302 V8 while the Continental had a 460
>>29141728the right is a 360 FE in an F250fords engine options were very weird and they couldn't pick a V8 to stick with
>>29141728Top shelf F250 and F350 long beds could have the 460; it was mostly useful if you wanted to tow stuff.
>>29141721This would have the AMC 250 I6 or 360 V8.
>>29141733f100/f150s could also get 460. they had a plethora of engine optionsif you wanted 4x4 in your f250, you only got 360 FE or I6
>>29141736nta but pretty sure any long bed model could have the 460
>>29141668Dodge unfortunately lost its big blocks when the 440 was killed by Lee Iaccoca in 79 as a desperation cost-saving measure.
>>29141682It was also not required for trucks to have a collapsible steering column until 81 (while cars did since 68) but in practice most of them had one long before that.
>>29141741Ford temporarily shelved the 460 in trucks 80-82. GM continued to offer 454s during this time despite scanty demand.
>>29141668>strong 4x4 systemsi live in Texas, bro. no truck here is 4x4 and no dealership stocks those.

>>29141785I have one in my garage, it's a 75 so different grill, but the OP's image generator can't tell a dodge from a chevy, and the gmc is just a chevy copy and doesn't need to be in the picture at all
>>29141787could have included the Jeep pickups too or even International's trucks too
>>29141785last year for the 440 *sad face*
just googled 78 d100 adventurer and this other ai bullshit video pops upthis isn't a real truck, no dodge ever came with the chevy style white stripe on the side, there was never any trim that wraps around itthing can't tell a dodge from an 80's ford ranger lmao
>>29141668every truck has a keyhole above and below the trim line
>>29141793as he said, Iacocca killed the 440 and destroyed the tooling for them in a desperate cost cutting move; he didn't think they would ever have any demand for the engine again and everyone assumed by 1985 that only compact pickups would be left when we had $8 a gallon gas.
>>29141793the very last 440s came off the line in August '78 iirc
found another ai bullshit incorrect dodge picture
imagine buying parts from a company that uses an ai picture of your car
>>29141793That truck is short bed so it wouldn't have a 440 anyway, it's almost certainly a 318 or 360. BTW, 78 was the first year Dodge offered four door crew cab trucks. This body style was never a big seller and was dropped after 85--aside from 78 when the 440 was available they were exclusively 360-powered.The Slant Six was the base engine but only found in single cab short bed trucks.
The Ramcharger also could have the 440 in the 70s whereas the Blazer and Bronco had only small block engines. The top was removable on earlier models although Chrysler avoided advertising that since it necessitated removing the rear shoulder seat belts.
>>29141809>78 was the first year Dodge offered four door crew cab trucksnope, 63 was
>>29141815you could get a Slant Six Ramcharger too but it must have been dogshit slow
>>29141815>>29141822pretty sure you could only get a six with a 2WD truck and 4x4s were V8-only due to their greater weight, and since i live in the Northeast 4x4 was the norm here and dealers didn't stock 2WD trucks. therefore it seems likely that six cylinder trucks went exclusively to the Sun Belt states.
>>29141815When the 3rd tail light became mandatory Ford removed the instructions from the owners manual on how to take off the Bronco shell.
>>29141822You could even get a six in a Suburban, again only on 2WD ones.
>>29141815IDK about the Bronco but the Blazer lacking a big block made sense because you were supposed to buy a Suburban for that.
>>29141830the 7th and 8th gen Suburbans most commonly had the 350 V8. again, 440s were only really needed for towing because they're too thirsty for a DD and beginning in 82 they also offered a diesel engine which was pretty rare as well.
>>29141835>440s were only really needed for towing because they're too thirsty for a DD*454 I meant
>>29141809according to the filename this is a rare diesel D100. Chrysler offered a Mitsubishi diesel six in the truck line for 78 only and under 3,000 vehicles got it.
Reminder that ALL Bronco are 4wd whereas ramcharger and fullsize blazer were available in 2wd or 4wd.
>>29141858now the first gen Bronco could have a six but the much bulkier second gen was V8 only. Blazers could have a six on the base 2WD model but the third gen ones dropped it.
>>29141830The Bronco's wheelbase was 104 inches, a little too short for towing. The Blazer and Ramcharger were two inches longer, but Blazers were small block only because big blocks were purposely limited to the Suburban.
>>29141826Any 70s-80s trucks you find in the NE today are probably imported from the Sun Belt since the original ones long kill from road salt.
>>29141751And people from Texas are fags
I am curious about the accessories of this era. Would these all have AC? This was pre CD era, was it pre-cassete era too? Is this the 8 track phase? Would either of those be standard or was it an expensive addon?
>>29141875options same as a typical car. they would have offered 8-track players in the 70s and cassettes in the 80s-early 90s.
>>29141721some faggot hipster's showpiece so he can LARP as a redneck while actual dirty work on farms is done with trucks made in the last decade
Dodge trucks from that era were nightmares of options. I have a '77 D150 with 440. Less than 100 D150s were made with the 440. It's a long bed bucket seat crew cab truck, which was only available in 150 trim.
>>29141882most 440s went into D300s or D400s. this truck was probably custom-ordered with it.
>>29141881>while actual dirty work on farms is done with trucks made in the last decadeI remember an anon posting that he works at a Chevy truck plant, they were assembling 600 a day and still behind on orders.
>>29141887I assume so. Seems unlikely that dealers would stock one like that.
The full-sized vans could have big blocks as well, but only on long body 15 seat passenger models used as mini-buses. I doubt it would be much fun trying to service a 440 in the tight between the seats engine compartment.
>>29141887Most likely, yes, but it's still interesting because the interior is really cool and surprisingly comfortable.
Dodge introduced a sculpted ram's head hood ornament with the 1981 facelift of the trucks. This was Iaccoca's idea as he thought it would look distinctive and draw attention to them. Originally it was decided that the full-size trucks and vans would be sold with minimal further investment or changes until gas became too expensive and they'd be replaced by minivans and rebadged Mitsubishi pickups, although that plan was cancelled when gas prices dropped in the mid-80s.
>>29141893Dodge vans in the 70s offered more luxury options and got more retail sales than Ford or Chevy vans which went mostly to fleet sales, but Iaccoca significantly de-contented them to save money and from the 80s onward most were fleet rather than retail.
>>29141822last year for the Slant Six in Dodge trucks and vans was 87 and yes it was dog poop slow. after that they replaced it with a modernized V6.
>>29141903that's a very base-looking model and definitely 2WD; it could well have a Slant Six in it
>>29141863Second gen was only 2 years (78/79) then the 6 cylinder was back. There was a lot of debate internally at Ford of even making that model because they were already in pre production phase for the 3rd gen
>>29141925If a truck is 2WD, it's also definitely from a warm weather state.
>>29141921my dad had a college job where he drove a 70s Ford utility van with a six and that was godawful slow and not able to handle highway speeds; basically only able to do city driving.
>>29141893440s were thirsty as hell, probably 12 mpg highway, 8 city.
>>29141938why Americans need Brontosaurus engines when other markets were ok with more manageable stuff?
>>29141940that thing is too weak for highway driving, it's a utility van for city use
>>29141938My 351w Bronco was rated at 11 city, 11 highway.
>>29141946the thirst of Broncos was legendary especially since 4WD was standard and not an option
>>29141938>The 1977 Chrysler New Yorker typically got 9 to 11 mpg in city driving and 11 to 14 mpg on the highway, depending on whether it was equipped with the standard 400 cubic-inch (6.6L) V8 or the optional 440 cubic-inch (7.2L) big-block V8big block trucks and vans were probably similar
>>29141730>360 forza edition engine >in the 70sOkay who's the time traveler
>>29141946I had an OBD2 351w bronco and got 14-16mpg with it
>>29141984that's a modernized EFI engine, not a carbed 70s one
>>29141991Craziest shit is the electronic feedback carbs got better fuel mileage than the standard carbs or the speed density EFI setups.>>29141984>OBD2 BroncoSo a '96 or a late '95 model. Im jealous.
>>29142017It was a 96 XLT. black over gray leather with the rivetless 8 hole alloys and black trim.My 302 bronco was an 89 blue/gray two tone with blue cloth interior and 33's on wagon wheel steelies. I miss them both
>>29142034>blue/gray two tone with blue cloth interior and 33's on wagon wheel steeliesThats my '85 XLT's setup. It came with big rivet alloys but I scored a set of 35s on the wagon wheels and meant to change back when i replaced tires but that was on a road trip and I went to 33s and actually are still running those 33s. Since I picked up another Ford that needed wheels I threw the alloys on it.Might swap them around someday but atleast theyre in the same driveway. Did you have a white or blue shell? (Deluxe two-tone option had matching blue shell)
>>29141790International made their own Blazer-class SUV in the 70s. Production ended in 1980 when the company withdrew from the light truck market.
