i want to buy picrel, a mazda 323f/astina (same 1.8L engine as the NA miata) and put a turbo on it myself. i'm not a mechanic but i can do basic maintenance. is this a good idea, both in terms of turbocharging it and doing it myself? can i make it so that it's not obvious it's there if the police/vehicle inspection pops the hood?
i'm poor and want a cheap, fun to drive car

It's pretty simple to turbocharge. Saw many builds on the old (dead) Astina GT forum. They're on fb now. Be hard to hide a turbo though. Exhaust is on the front of the engine.

I drove a 5 speed manual Astina with the 1.6l engine for nearly a decade. Never had any trouble with it, gearbox was great too, awesome car anon good luck
