>>2860075>simply stayed overnightmany times.
OP here. Like a moron, I created a thread and forgot to contribute. I hike a lot and tend to favour woodlands and forrests over any other biome. As for cabins, I've never built one but have stayed in many overnight, in several different countries, my favourite being a cabin in Austria where I stayed overnight whilst I was on a hiking trip. It was a basic cabin with a bunj bed and a small fireplace. It was close to a fresh water spring which was useful. It was freezing outside, around 14 degrees F but inside it was cozy as fuck. I hope to build my own cabin one day. I have a patch if land in Ohio but I haven't developed it yet.
>>2860106And there were 2 major snowstorms that hit him in the last 2 1/2 weeks.Hes either dead in his car on the side of a mountain or at his parents house.
>>2860075Back when my family owned 50 acres we'd stay in a small cabin with 2 sets of bunk bedsno running water, electricity was from a generator and the restroom was an outhouse. It was fun until the last day because we would all just sit around and i wanted pancakes. So i'd get pissed off we were just sitting around when i could be eatings bacon, eggs and pancakeswe ended up selling the 50 acres because the land was between two counties so property tax sky rocketed. It was literally in the middle of nowhere and i was next in line for inheritence. Owned 3 hills/mountains at one point
>>2860289i also fell down this hill once
>>2860076>>2860079>>2860106>>2860262im totally here and well. the /out/ janny is hates me because he ain't me. i installed a window and made a door out of rough sawn cedar from the cedar mill which was $10 for a big ass bundle. great cabin building resources imo

Here's my 12x20 in Maine. It's literally just 4 walls and a roof rn, with a loft where I sleep.Anyone know the do's and dont's for installing a woodstove?
>>2860373>woodstovejust use single wall pipe if you dont have an attic. several options to go through the roof. just use tin if you are worried about protecting the walls. picrel is mine. i did the rock and the tin. (i actually built my whole house alone)
I want to, but I am a suburbanite with literally no hands on skills. I can barely tie my own shoe laces or set up a tent so how I'm expected to build a cabin or a mobile cabin is beyond me.
>>2860371Pretty good, thanks for the update. Nice kot btw

>>2860375mobile homes are considered trashy because of trailer parks, but functionally it work like a cabin, you just need a plot of land and sanitationthey might not be planned for wood stove/heating tho, but beside that most of the job it already donealso you can't learn without trying
>>2860380Yeah but I don't like that. I'm too picky with customisability. I like the idea of a single roomed space with bedding, desks, cooking equipment, storage and a possible shower in a corner.

>>2860075I have tent-camped and wild-camped for most of my life. I only used cabins a few times, mostly on group hikes. Once, I found an abandoned cabin in Siberia, and stayed there for the night. It was falling apart but it provided shelter for the night. I've also stayed in a few Bothies overnight when I hiked in Scotland and Wales. Many years ago I met my wife and we started using cabins on our trips, mostly inna woods. It was a big step up and I really enjoy how easy it is. I still enjoy using tents but I have gotten use to being comfy inna cabin.

>>2860585>>2860564Tar paper or house wrap the outer walls then cover them with the saw mill scraps just like you made the door. You could do the same with the interior, you would have two air barriers for insulation and it would vastly increase the strength. I've done entire cabins like that.

I am extremely tempted to buy a nice block of land and build a tiny home. I am qualified and could easily do it but I just need to commit. I am also single so it would be difficult to meet a girl outside of a community
>>2860870>but I just need to commit.do it. i took the plunge in 2019 and it was a great decision. everyone thought i was stupid and was going to waste my money and fail. if you do it with savings and dont have a mortgage you can get by on almost nothing and never having to worry about being evicted gives you peace of mind. i now have time to do all my hobbies i never had time for. it also was a great decision financially, my land increased 5x in value. yolo>I am also single so it would be difficult to meet a girl outside of a communitymost women arent even worth beind nice to let alone marry. they will just bitch and moan everyday until they bankrupt and divorce you.
>>2860873>my land increased 5xThis.I initially bought 20 acres and recently the 20 adjoining acres became available.I paid 4x what it sold for 10 years ago- didnt really have a choice on that, if I didnt buy it someone else would have and no fucking way am I having a neighbor that close when all the other lots in the "neighborhood" are like 200-500 acres. But it also increased the resale value of my original parcel by making it twice the size so on paper im still ahead.
>>2860887How will you use you land anon? I have 50 acres but I have yet to do anything with it. Might use it to crow food crops, maybe build a cabin, or both. Not sure yet. It's pretty good land.
>>2860889nta but if you have land you should plant an orchard asap, walnut or similar in priority, then the fruit that is know to grow well in the regiona vegetable gardenif you want to do real farm work wheat is a no brainer
>>2860889I have a 15 acre motorcycle track because ive been riding dirt for 30 years and now I can just do cool shit like that.>>2860890Really weird that you mentioned walnuts. The 40 acres is my hunting cabin. My house is on 20 acres and I have a black walnut tree (also have an orchard and blah blah blah). But I have one walnut and its an absolute pita to harvest the nuts so we ignore it but every year theres dozens of saplings that pop up and this year I decided that instead of mowing them down id dig them up and transplant them out to the hunting cabin. I put them in pots a couple months ago and took them out and am waiting for the most dormant time of year to put them in the ground (I guess thats like "now").Also dug up the volunteer maples because I like maples. And about a dozen saw tooth oaks because those damn to things are like 50 bucks a piece.
>>2860917Oh ya. For the recordI make bank off pecans in a good year.Pears and apples we can for the family.
>>2860652Thats a window
>>2860652That is trivial. Tar paper the outside then use mill scraps for siding, it is now draft tight. Chink it with loose insulation then throw another layer of tar paper over it and tack Lauan over that with ring nails. Or just wall the interior like he made the door. Use some mill scraps for strapping if you want and the nicer pieces for trim. The same method he used for the door can make a floor.

>>2861039I have an address now.Had to call some county tech that came out and checked where my cabin was with GPS in relation to the road and I got a street number (its not done by driveway location- makes sense when you think about how buildings can be arranged on a large piece of property).Mailbox is about a mile down the road- was the closest place a mail carrier could access the shoulder due to how the road has cliffs/ditches along the edge.
>>2861051That’s fair. Sounds like a preddy good setup. If I ever get an inna woods place my two requirements are 1. A spring/ source of fresh water, and 2. A lake/ place to raise fish. I grew up in Mississippi and I know that if you have a decent sized lake you can eat forever raising catfish
>>2861057I have a non-navigable creek and found out that if I wanted to build a pond fed from it that it was an act of congress level of paperwork because of those affected downstream.Makes sense- I wouldnt want someone upstream to damn the creek and cause my portion of the creek to dry up.Something to keep in mind- best to get a parcel with an existing pond or do your due diligence on local regulations before you buy if its an important aspect of the property to you.Luckily in my area you can drill anywhere and hit water. My well driller was impressed with what he hit and says it can pull about 100 gpm. 220 feet drill with water at 120 and pump sitting at 170.I had a friend in Nevada who had some property and got a quote from a well driller. They said in that area they MIGHT hit water at 2,500 feet but the odds were not in their favor and even if its a dry hole that will be $50,000. Mine was $9,000 and that included drill, casing, pump, expansion tank, trenching the water line to the cabin and even clearing about 1/10th of an acre of saplings and overgrowth.

Most countries don't even allow you to build on your own land, unless it's already in a residential zone.I'm European, so my first thought was some abandoned mountain village in Portugal or Italy.
>>2861752>Most countries don't even allow you to build on your own land, unless it's already in a residential zone.yeah, now on paper it's possible to change the status of land, at least in france, need to go to the local mayor, ask of utilities (water/electricity) to be installed and have an address which can be refused, and then ask for a permit and a declaration to build anything which also can be refused, but since it's handled locally you can just bribe the guy, pretty sure everyone does that anyway
>>2860075Not a cabin, but I was hiking with a group of friends and we got caught in a snow storm which was not expected that time of year. >>2862325>I'm in my mid-30s and feel like I can't even start off in life because such a normal, natural life is denied systematically.my life started in my mid 30's anon. there are alot of ways to still make money but you will have to make some sacrifices. i went to the north dakotan oil field when i was 32 and worked all i could. at 39 i took all my savings and built a homestead. living in north dakota can be miserable, nothing to do and extremely cold in winter but you can get unlimited overtime and stack cash. some jobs even provide housing and that really allows you to save. the system is definitely stacked against you but its not impossible. honestly if you dont have the ability to do what it takes to sacrifice, persevere and save $100k then you dont have what it takes to just live on a modest piece of land.

>>2864001what is the floor size and what do you plan to do about it
i built and lived in one in alaska for several winterscost in total was around 50k for land and materials, it took about two months to build with most of that being sledding out materials.access is only by a moderately long and remote trail so i had to spend a decent chunk on four wheelers/snowmachines alsoit was fun and challenging to build (stick built, local trees are bad) but it became very demoralizing and lonely as less and less friends came to visit. my life just became a cycle of cook, work on trail, shovel roof, cut wood, shoot guns, watch movies, and sleep. also drink. a lot of drinking.it was worth it but now it is just more of a getaway/backup cabin.
>>2864388>also drink. a lot of drinking.Innawoods anon here.Can verify.
>>2860564It's something alright would nut inside my woman there/10.
>>2860373Most kino ITT>>2860374Ive got no experience, but isnt it recommended that there be a 90* bend in the pipe to act as a sort of spark arrester and to keep the heat inside?
>>2860373Also snce no one has said it yet, when you buy your stove you need to run a fire through it at least once outdoors before installing it to burn off some of the nastier chemicals inside from manufacturing (or something like that).
>>2866433not an expert but do have some experiencea huge majority of the heat comes from the stove itself and not the pipe. you want a good draft from the pipe so the less curvature the better as far as combustion goes. this also makes cleaning and creosote buildup easier to manage.i have a double wall straight pipe(about 16 ft) and it works great. once the interior of the pipe heats up it makes an excellent draft that lasts even until the fire is almost dead. if i open the vent all the way it burns like a jet engine and it heats up very quickly. if i really wanted even longer burn times i could install a damper and achieve what you are talking about but i haven't found it necessary.

>>2867342that's just flat land garbage where you can just roll the log anyway
>>2860075The closest i have ever gotten to that, was at a friends cabin in the middle of the woods. There were no electricity and no running water. The light inside was from petroleum lamps, and we cooked on a gas stove. The gas was from a big bottle. The water we got from a hand cranked water pump, that was connected to a well somehow. In order to flush the toilet, we had to go get a bucket of water from the nearby stream. Was an experience to try, but i wouldnt wanna stay like that for prolonged periods.

>>2860075I rented a log cabin for 6~ years.Very kino but lots of spiders. LOTS of spiders. You have no idea how many fucking spiders love to live in log cabins. One morning I woke up to take a shit and I found four black widows in my toilet bowl. Only other downside is that I was 45m~ away from civilization. But it was dead quiet at night, so that was neat.
how will you make money on your homesteadno joke answersinnawoods means no money and the bills won't stop coming in
>>2867369>and the bills won't stop coming inwell the point is to be autonomous on as much things as possible to remove these billslike replacing the water bill by a well, or the electricity bill by solar panels/windmill/watermill, groceries by growing your own food, etc...i suppose you can sell your food excess (tho regulations might forbid that in most places), furs if you hunt, or you could grow a commodity like tobacco or firewood

My guess is you’re trying to make money back on your investment and are the fag on fakebook charging $40 a rabbit. Sink cost fallacy on display. “No you gotta buy into rabbits because I did and I’ve invested too much time, energy, and money into it and I can’t admit when I’m wrong.” That’s you. That’s what you sound like.To reiterate: rabbit starvation is real. You need more than lean meat to live.(So controversial)!
>>2867486i don't doubt the starlink, i doubt the solar panelsand a battery don't last long enough, my uncle live not innawood but in a fishing cabin on a lake, solar's just enough for phone and lights, and he doesn't use his computer so much
>>2867495People wbo claim theyre innawoods on nothing but solar are either full of shit or live like Jeremiah Johnson. They cite theoretical output on a set of panels they show but never mention seasonal changes or battery usage during 3 days storms. We had an anon who worked on ship for 6 months then chilled in a cabin with a view of Mt. Denali. To get supplies he rode his snowmobile down to meet a sea plane at an unnamed lake.THAT is a use for solar. But trying to be sone apocalypse prepper or spending $10k for a setup just to be "self sufficient" and not pay $140 a month to a power company is the dumbest shit ever- especially considering by the time you get close to breaking even you have to replace power cells And heaven forbid a branch or hail damages a set of panels. And all of that effort and you still dont get A/C and are wasting time stoking a stove day after day.
>>2867512yeah, only a water turbine is reliable enough, and even then it can be damaged by freezing water in winter depending on the setup
>>2860380>just need a plot of land and sanitationU need lot more than that, it's called permits here in USA
>>2867520>oh say can you see
>>2867520The only permit I needed was for septic. No requirements for water or electric- theyre not even required if i want to live without them. They dont care if I freeze to death but open sewage contaminates the surrounding properties. You can actually be evicted from your own property over sewage issues.Any structures only have to be inspected/certified (certificate of occupation) if i rent it. Its my right as a 'merican to die when my shoddily constructed shack collapses. This is strictly regional of course.Building on the beach in Los Angeles is going to be very different than building in bum fuck nowhere Nebraska.
>>2867534>Building on the beach in Los Angeles is going to be very different than building in bum fuck nowhere Nebraska. That makes sense but legit houses there only cost $50k lol, if that's the move then why even move to the woods and struggle with permits and septic and all the aforementioned shit lol
>>2867539Because that $50k house isnt on 100 acres in the middle of a forest. Its on a 1/4 acre lot on the same street as Dollar General.Id rather spend $50K for acreage and live in a shack made out of palets than $50k for a house and listen to the meth dealer neighbor beating his girlfriend on the other side of the backyard fence thats 10 feet from my bbq pit.And if I had $100k I wouldnt get a $50k house on $50k of land.Id get $100k in land.Oh wait.Thats exactly what I did...

>>2860075Currently building. 10x16 with half loft and cathedral ceiling. Already took a full hit from a 75 foot black cherry and was totally fine. Plan off grid solar and wood stove. I'm a geophysicist with woodworking background. 3 inch industrial grade Rockwood exterior insulation and then 2 inch interior insulation. Large south facing window and 2 foot roof overhangs so ambient heat in winter from low sun and shade in summers. White metal roof so no maintenance and cooler in summer. My foundations used no concrete, I used mechanically stabilized earth. Cabin hasn't moved a mm yet. Also used adjustable deck supports which worked well. Planted so many fucking nut and fruit and berry trees now... Pawpaw, American chestnut, peach, plum, various apple, pecan, hickory, butternut, haskap, Saskatoon, all the raspberries and boysenberry, pineberry... Etc. forest is mature sugar maple so syrup x infinity. Plan to use cubic grizzly with roaster to basically cook anything. I've got it all worked out. Micro 5v piezo pumps to gravity feed water, temp switches to destratify cabin air...
