Do you wear a helmet when you are riding your bike? why or why not? i used to be heavy into road biking and going FAST in traffic to show off and get my adrenaline going so i always wore a helmet otherwise i felt extremely exposed, but now that im older i prefer to just cruise on the bike paths and take in the scenery and smell the fresh air, so i stopped wearing a helmet and just let the wind blow through my hair
>>
Always a helmet. One bad fall for whatever reason and you're gone without one
>>
>>2860627
Never worn a helmet never been in a situation where I felt it was necessary.
Got a scar from ring bite, would a helmet have helped me with that?
>>
I never use to wear a helmet, but then I got into a serious motorbike accident (going 40kmph/25mph) and was in ICU for like 3 weeks, and hospital for 2 months. I now wear a helmet no matter what I ride seeing the damage I got. Luckily I didn't get any head damage
>>
>>2860656
>Luckily I didn't get any head damage
So a helmet wouldn't have helped?
>>
sometimes I do, sometimes I don't
>>
Only german tourists and faggot race cyclists wear helmets here.
But we have the best cycling infrastructure in the world.

I guess it depends onw here you live.
>>
>>2860627
yeah go ahead and wear it, maybe even put a little rearview mirror on your handlebar you dork
>>
>>2860658
people like you deserve the brain damage you get.
>>
>>2860658
I had a motorbike helmet on when I had the accident, if I didn't have the helmet on I most likely would have died. I rephrase, I didn't get any head damage because I had a helmet on (the helmet had grazes) my body took all the heat
>>
>>2860627
i didn't, then I took flight after slamming in to a car, then I wore a helmet until my first winter trip, where I couldn't wear one because it didn't fit over my hat. and now I haven't used one in years
>>
I was knocked off my bike by a car that struck my back tire. Since then (30-odd years ago), I have had a pain in my neck.
PS I wore full cover on a motorcycle in 1997 -- helmet, leather jacket, glices, boots -- and skidded then fell off my M/C. That earned me a subdural hematoma. Could have killed me.
>>
when I learned biking at 5 years old, I went up a steep hill next to the house and rolled down over and over.
my mom came oy and told me to wear my helmet. the very next go, I caught my front wheel on the sidewalk and face planted on the asphalt. broke a big chunk of the front of my helmet. would have probably cracked my skull without it.
haven't worn a helmet since around 12 years old.

hi dutchbro

Wearing a helmet can save your life so I always do unless I’m going down the street on some quiet level neighborhood street or a pedestrian bikes only path for a short distance.
>>
>>2860627
My cousin died because a car hit him on his bike. He was wearing a helmet, but retardedly oversized american trucks will still break your bones and rupture your internal organs.

I'd dishonor his memory if I didnt take biking seriously and at least wear my helmet ffs.
>>
>>2860627
Always wear a helmet.
You seen how fast guys ion e-bikes and scooters are going now? There’s even a guy here with some crazy performance 1-wheel on the paths and he’s passing cars on the adjacent road.
Plus there’s just getting to the trail. I’ll take it off for a long climb on a 1-way trail but that’s all.
Anyway my bike got stolen on Sunday so won’t be riding for a while anyway.

This is in somebody else’s garage now :..(
>>
>>2860824
i would also have stolen that tbhfam
>>
Been driving from France to the Schwarzwalds in Germany on an e-bike without a helmet. I’m already retarded by not wearing one, I’m not losing much if I wear it or not. HOWEVER please do wear one since shit can happen, especially when complete bafoons like me are zooming through the small bike roads.
Don’t wear it because you may fall, wear it because I might slam into you.

I fucking hate those assholes
>>
>>2860713
what is up, broeder?
>>
>>2860946
i wouldn't actually have stolen it, just thought it was a nice bike
>>
>>2860824
how did you get it stolen
>>
>>2860627
I recently got into an accident on a bike trail where I underestimated the slope and fell on the back of my head, if it wasn't for the helmet at worst I could have become quadriplegic, thanks to the helmet though I only came out with a neck muscle strain
So wear a helmet if you intend to go over 10mph
>>
>>2860627
I think helmets are completely unnecessary unless you're doing off-road stuff, racing, or you commute in traffic on a bike. If you're just recreationally riding on paved surfaces or even hard dirt paths, there's just no realistic scenario in which a helmet is going to do anything. Who even falls off a bike after the age of 5? I rode a bike from Denver to New York City back in 2018 and there was never a time along that entire 2,000 miles a helmet would have prevented some kind of injury. Maybe if you're an old fart with no strength left I can see it. But you can just stop your fall in any likely accident scenario, which 99% of the time will be you falling to the side.

the only falls I've had off a bike since i was a kid have been going ass first over the handlebars
>>
I don't but I only ride for exercise/leisure around my suburban neighborhood or on some local paved or gravel bike paths.
Last week I actually fell for the first time in years though, wheels slid out while I was turning and I jumped off the bike and landed on my feet. Has made me a bit more hesitant my last few rides but I'm still not wearing a helmet.
>>
>>2861181
Well that's because you're a retard who doesn't know how to brake. Remember anon, it's either both brakes at the same time, or rear brake followed by front brake. Lean your ass backwards off the seat to counteract your momentum.
>>
>>2861227
no, it's because I'm a retard who's crashed in to things because I wasn't paying attention
>>
You're better off dying than being a cripple. There's a reason insurance companies lobbied against helmets being a requirement for motorcycles and bikes.
>>
>>2861259
This is verbatim what I told the doctors in the ER after my motorcycle crash
>>
>>2861262
absolutely, if the crash is bad enough to need a helmet it's far better you just die.
>>
>>2861173
I will tell you of a video I saw years ago on /n/. I can't post it because I didn't save it at the time, but the gist of it was, a guy on a bike was t-boned by a dump truck. It was going slow, it didn't run over him, just the immense momentum made him go from vertical to horizontal almost instantly. His head hit the pavement and he didn't get up after that. The remaining 20 minutes of the video was just a dark stain growing around his head and an ambulance arriving to pick him up (it was cctv footage).
So just because you lack the imagination to picture something happening doesn't mean it will never happen. Accidents in general are things you don't expect or see coming.

This is retarted, I have had a friend die because he took a joyride on a motorbike and came off. He would have lived with a helmet on with minor injuries.

My personal accident and I also would have died. I sustained serious body injuries but in no means was I a vegetable. After a year I recovered to 100%. Helmets are so critical it is not even funny. The head is fragile.
>>
what is it about americans and their borderline religious opposition to safety gears? i remember them being like this with car seatbelts too
>>
Nope. It's one of the reasons that I decided not to get a motorcycle. Just wanna ride around and feel the wind in my hair. Helmets and pads are uncomfortable/sweaty and shit gets hot here
>>
I wear a helmet 75% of the time, but it sucks there are so many dorks in the biking community.

I remember a couple years ago I was just cruising an easy MTB trail at a slow pace stoned without a helmet and some fags made shitty comments and put me down while passing me
>>
>>2861639
>>2861639
>while passing you

Don't worry about what cowards too scared to actually confront you give a shit about. The equivalent to yelling 'get a job' at a homeless person while you're driving past them on your way to your wage slave job.
>>
>>2860627
I haven't hit my head yet :^)
>>
>>2860658
you are so retarded, you should wear a helmet 24/7
>>
>>2860824
Thats why I am hiding a tracking device on my bike
>>
>>2861936
I hide them in my ass, just in case
>>
>>2862427
your bikes??
>>
>>2860627
I use to never wear one because it was uncomfortable and dorky looking but then one of my friends shaved off a clean chunk of his scalp and some powder off the skull from an otherwise typical fall and crash. A helmet would have specifically prevented him from having a now huge mangled ugly looking bald spot on the back of his head and the trauma of that experience.
>>
>>2861639
i dont even ride that fast but this one time i passed this slowpoke boomer guy from my town and called out "on your left" as i passed he just about had a stroke right then and there and almost veered off the path. when he caught up to me at the next red light he proceeded to lecture me about how i could have caused someone to crash really bad with that "kind of behaviour". i just told him that i was sorry i offended his delicate sensibilities lol. hes some hip record store owner in my town who nobody likes and has his own radio show on the college radio station that nobody listens to.
>>
>>2862459
You should repeatedly call in to his show and shout
>ON YOUR LEFT
>>
>>2862462
LOL i wish it was a call in show but its just his narcissistic ramblings about his vast obscure music collection
>>

I lived in NH which had super relaxed safety laws. No helmet laws, no seatbelt laws, it was great.

But during summer camp they made us wear helmets. I was a fat kid and one day it was just me and the very fit counselor, so i was struggling to keep up. Anyway, i lost control, hit a rock, went over my handlebars into a tree trunk

I got concussed, and they brought the helmet to the hospital and it was cracked in two like an egg

I've worn a helmet ever since.
>>
>>2862483
>I got concussed, and they brought the helmet to the hospital and it was cracked in two like an egg
Yeah, they're supposed to do that.
>>
>>2862488
well it was effective
>>
>>2860627
I have so many fucking helmets these days.
>a standard bike helmet for quick trips or to throw in a backpack and take to a city for scooter rentals or whatever
>a nice road/gravel bike helmet
>an old skateboard style helmet
>a catchall 4 season multi sport helmet w/ removable face guard and rated for snow/bike/mtb/river/mountain
>2 Snowboarding helmets that I sometimes wear on the bike in winter since they are warmer and fit well with goggles
>a full mask/visor dirt bike helmet for my no-pedaling-req’d e-bike since it’s basically a moped

All of them have MiPS and one of the reg bike helmets has the crumple zones thing.

I also have mirrors on two bikes, Bluetooth lights and blinkers on a bike, and mirrors + rear view camera + blinkers + horn on the e-bike,

Sometimes I go for short trips to the store without a helmet, or just for leisurely rides on paths/suburbs. And I put a front rack on my bike specifically to have a place on bike to store the helmet if I want to take it off.

In 7th grade, back in the 90s, a kid at my school died in a skiing accident. Me and all of my friends basically always wore helmets for everything ever since. Over the years since
>2 friends from back then got impaled on tree branches in snowboard/bike accidents, 1 of them lost a kidney but otherwise they both recovered,
>another friend fucked his back and spine up in a bike accident but recovered,
nobody else died from a head injury though
