What's the highest mountain in your country/state? Do you feel jealous of places with higher mountains?Mountains in Poland are fun but the highest one (picrel) is 2499 m, which is much lower than Alps. Moreover, highest mountains in Poland are often quite crowded. This makes some Poles jealous of poeple who live near Alps.I'm 99.9% sure people who live in flat countries like Lithuania feel jelous about our mountains but I wonder if people who live in mountains like Alps or Rockies feel jealous anout Himalayas or Andes.
>>2865537North south west germany has a mountain of 1164m, and I am very jealous of the highest moutain of south south west germany at 1494m. Especially because ours has a scenic swamp on top and theirs has a stupid open grass field. They don't deserve those 300m they have on us.
Mt Whitney in California is 14500 feet high. I made the retarded to decision to camp at 12000 feet to summit in the early morning. Got elevation sickness overnight and next to no sleep in 60mph wind gusts at 30f temp. Turned around after about a mile and another 1000 feet elevation gain. I felt totally fine once I descended to about 9000 feet. I'll try it again someday.
>>2865537To me, base-to-summit gain is more important than elevation alone. By this measure, Mt. McKinley in Alaska is more impressive than Everest. It's also why Mt. Washington is more impressive than its elevation alone would indicate, and more impressive than some peaks in the Rockies. That being said, the base-to-summit for much of the Alps is surely greater than 2499 m, so I understand your envy. Still, don't be an ingrate. I live in Northern Indiana, hundreds of miles from the nearest decent-sized HILLS, much less mountains.
>>2865548skill issue
>>2865548There is a rule called "sleep low, walk high". Sleeping at 8500 ft and surviving 6000 ft elevation gain seems smarter than sleeping at 12000 ft and surviving 2500 ft elevation gain. Don't take my words ford granted, I've never been above 8500 ft.
>>2865537just be happy with what you have its not like you'll see or know honestly what every inch of everything looks like
>>2865537I live in Oregon, land of volcanoes. I find volcanoes more interesting than other kinds of mountains, so am quite happy here.
>>2865537No, mountains are scary and dangerous. I am very jealous of people who live in areas with smooth rolling wooded hills though, now that is beauty.
>>2865603Is that the three sisters and broken top from somewhere else? My issue with Oregon was the hiking was SO much more technical and you needed fancier gear and it was so much colder for much more of the year in the mountains and the snow-free season was ~ jun-october if you were luckyits just a much more extreme climate than the eastern us at least you got a good view from an alpine hike the weird part to me is more pictures from alpine hikes aren't photographically that interesting, the color range and shapes are somewhat limited and the views are usually blurry
>>2865640It is from Diamond Peak. The best thing to do is learn how to backcountry ski for winter. Provides flotation on the snow for hiking up, and then you get to ski back down.
>>2865641So it is looking out at the sisters? I did a mountain pass between middle and south sister (I think) and so you can see where I was (highest elevation I've ever gotten) and we got rained out in the pass and had to hunker in our tents sideways 45 degree cold rain in late august. >The best thing to do is learn how to backcountry ski for winter.yeah so as i said it just becomes a rich people thing where you need tons of gear and im sure its cool for autists with tard strength like you but for normal people its just an absurd physical and gear requirement and they don't offer any easier access to these places esp for non skiers. the east coast is a lot more accessible to poorfags and weaklings like myself I fully lack the coordination to ski and that shit's extremely dangerous beyond that
>>2865644You can always snowshoe up things if you don't want to learn to ski, it is just more of a slog.>rich people thingSkiing in Oregon is not that expensive if you stay away from the large resorts like Bachelor and Hood. The local ski area near me (Willamette Pass) I think is currently selling a season pass for $250. Buying the gear is expensive, but that is one time purchase. >I fully lack the coordination to skiI am not good at skiing. I did not grow up skiing and learned as an adult. I focused on just learning enough that I can get down things without injuring myself, but I do not look good doing it.
>>2865646so yes, I am looking at the three sister? omg you peopleI have no interest in commercial skiing I've just realized I hate snow and only enjoy hiking in the "traditional appalachian season" of late march to mid november when I don't have to put up with slippery surfacesI also mean to access any sort of summit it's an extreme physical commitment. >I did not grow up skiing and learned as an adult. you have tard strength, I can't compete, you probably go home and code 100,000 new lines of code after climbing a 12,000 ft tall mountain, oregon's just built for hardier stock than Iwimps belong in appalachia
>>2865647>so yes, I am looking at the three sister? omg you peopleIn the picture you can see Mt Washington, Middle Sister, South Sister, Broken Top, and Mt bachelor. North sister is hiding behind Middle sister.
>>2865647>I have no interest in commercial skiingI don't really either. But you have to do it to learn before you can go out in the backcountry.
>>2865648Are the two main big snowy things in the center background middle and south sister?if so, that pass I did is even higher than I remember. Anyways I did an outward bound trip years ago where we were supposed to go all the way through the pass but had to turn around on top of it because of sideways rain. So I've been to somewhere in your picture, albeit in summer, and it was still pretty extreme. Yes, it gets burning fucking hot in Appalachia in July and August, but otherwise its nice not to have to deal with such extreme weather. I remember thinking it looked like the moon. And getting to pic related summit looks terrifying as well. >>2865649that's just too muchlike 1% of the population is fit enough to summit that sort of shit, whereas there's a lot more accessible high peaks in the east as well as plenty that aren't easy to get on top of at all
>>2865650>Are the two main big snowy things in the center background middle and south sister?Yes. Here are pictures taken from south and middle. Left is from south looking at middle and north (taken in october)Right is from middle looking at south and broken top (taken in july)
>>2865651this is nice and all but it makes me happy for my snow free world and the greening I will be able to capture photographically soon a winter I spent in central oregon was the most extreme place I'd ever been, and I didn't have a car so biking in winter on studded tires was an experienceI don't think many people realize how extreme an environment oregon is outside of the big valley
It feels like cheating to mention anything in the Upper Peninsula, so I'm guessing the tallest mountain here in the mitten of Michigan is one created by Waste Management's landfill. >In 2018, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the highest surface elevation in Michigan was the top of the Tilden Mine waste pile in Marquette County near Ishpeming. At the time, the top of the pile was at slightly above 2,000 feet (610 m), more than 20 feet (6.1 m) higher than the summit of Mount Arvon.Ok, even including the UP doesn't keep a trash pile from being the state's highest point.
>>2865537i do. and i'm in spain, which i guess isn't so bad because it has a few with more than 3k meters but they are all 8 hour drives from where i live so it's fucking bullshit. i have several 2500 relatively close to me but i'm already sick of them. i can't imagine what it might be like living in netherlands for example
>>2865537Denali is the highest in my country and Mt. Marcy is the highest in my state. No, I don't get jealous of places with higher mountains. Why would I?
>>2865700Because Mt. Marcy is a bit of a mountainlet. Not that it's not pretty but don't you wish to have something like this?
>>2865703>is a bit of a mountainletwhat is prominence
>>2865700You mean McKinley.
