Maybe an aromatic. I don't like aromatics that much, but if you smoke aromatics too fast they taste even more like hot air than usual and they can give tongue bite. Maybe also learn the "breath method" and just do solely that for a while.

Breath method is basically you just stick the pipe in your mouth and breath normally. Your tongue sort of acts as a diaphragm and draws the pipe for you anyway.

I’ve noticed that I tend to avoid my plug cut tobaccos, just because the preparation always seems too inconvenient in my head. But every time I actually smoke them it really isn’t too difficult to prepare and smoke and I’m always left wondering why I avoid them.

I don't like aromatics just because I don't like them that much. Carter Hall type aromatics is the most I can really tolerate as being smokeable. Even something like C&D's Bijou is just too much aromatic for me even though I really wanted to like it. You need to smoke them way too slowly to get them to taste like anything other than just hot air.

Though I will say, a cigar shop I went to while sort of out of town (hours away) had this house blend that was kind of like a kitchen sink blend. Perique, Latakia, Burley, I'm sure Virginia, Black Cavendish, etc. Just kinda everything, and it was topped with some light chocolate flavor. That was an aromatic that I could easily see myself smoking, but it's just too far away to go get and I haven't found that blend online anywhere. It was like 90% cigar and vapes so I have a hard time believing it was genuinely a house blend, but it might have been.

the biggest issue is that you don't know how much it actually has though, so you can pretty easily kill yourself if you're abusing it (well, that and the fact its extremely addictive, since its literally just opium)

What's the consensus on brair vs pear wood? I've enjoyed cigars for a while and want to dabble into pipes. Looking at the No. 25 Kaiser from Mr. Brog and a Retro Brair Smooth Apple. I've heard that pear heats too quickly/adds a fruity taste.

You could always give a corncob a go if you're new and looking for something cheap and easily sourceable, a lot of people swear by them, they'll also impart a kettle corn flavor to most tobaccos which is often nice. If you're a cigar enjoyer, stay away from aromatics until you know them by reputation.

Ended up with a breeze JUST consistent enough to blow over the pipe and scatter the baccy on my charring light. Then it just billowed my pipe too much and the whole smoke was too hot and my tongue got burned and I couldn’t taste a thing. Wind cap didn’t help, just caused my pipe to keep going out. Can’t win em all.

i get Lova soft bristles off amazon for cheap, they're just standard cotton ones
i also get the extra long JB Long brand for my churchwarden pipes, since they're thinner & of course longer

i try to avoid the cheapo-crafts ones because i don't need to be smoking plastic filaments, but some pipes are so thinly drilled that they're needed (along with them being good for extremely dirty estate pipes)

the main thing is getting what fits though, as i've gotten some premium ones that were way too thick to use on my older pipes

There’s some nuance at play.
Necessary? No.
Does it alter the flavor? Mehhhh. All a meerschaum or balsa wood filter is looking to do is just soak up the steam and heated moisture to deliver a dryer, mediated smoke that won’t bite your tongue with a hot steam burn. A charcoal filter will do a little more to actually absorb some volatile organic compounds and also presumably shift the pH a little bit. So there is some flavor alteration happening here on paper. But that being said, I’ve seen people claim that even a charcoal filter is still a minimal change to the overall nuances of flavor. And if anything might help you enjoy flavors by umpiring an otherwise bitey blend to not be so harsh.

For beginners it’s probably a little better because you’re likely going to have a tendency to puff all of your smokes like a freight train and risk tongue bite over and over again as you learn to pace yourself and your pipeweed.

But personally? I strictly smoke without them. I have a number of 9mm pipes but I just pack and smoke em’ without a filter. That being said: I have been on a straight virginia tear recently—which unfortunately has raped the side of my tongue a few times, even with a slow and paced smoke. I have meerschaum & charcoal filters in my online cart right now so hopefully I can share some future experiences soon. And i’ve had a few smokes with the Savinelli balsa filters and have noticed it at least keeps a blend certainly more dry (but nonetheless I still got gurgling and needed to shove a pipe cleaner down the stem anyways so I stopped bothering with the balsas)
But hopefully what I have to share so far is a little helpful.

Be warned: it can get fierce and dirty. It’s not uncommon for blends to quickly shoot up to the $200-300 price range by a bunch of jackass sellers and plutocrat users with auto-bidding. Like literally the second you place a bid on something you want, someone will automatically outbid you and you’ll never win.
Better to sort by “auctions ending soon” or “buy it now” so you actually have a chance at blends that have gone a little overlooked and are quietly waiting to get snatched up.
Oh also the website has a gay ass options for sellers to automatically void any action if it never goes above a certain price. E.g. one time I sat around for like 20 days praying and hoping I held this cheap $20 bid on a tin of c&d small batch carolina red flake. This is also what I say. A daily coffee is much more addictive than 1 or 2 bowls of pipe tobacco per day. Personally, I don't even really feel "addicted" at all when I'm smoking 1 bowl per day, but if I've been smoking 2 bowls per day for a while, I do get some cravings if I then decide to just go a day without smoking. But once you're over the hurdle of the cravings, it goes away. And I kinda think the cravings can feel kinda good sometimes.

So yeah, I really think coffee is more addictive than 1-2 pipes per day.
And compared to tobacco snuff, pipe tobacco is nothing. I think snuff is extremely easy to get addicted to and hard to quit.

Received a nice little blessing today in the form of a few ounces of a 10+ year old batch of McClelland's. No idea which blend this is, but it's definitely some kind of red Virginia. Tried it for the first time on a beautiful stroll along the creek. The rumors are true, this stuff is pretty damn good. A little bit sweet and a little bit smokey, and it definitely has that legendary ketchup/vinegar thing going on, which somehow works. Just a little bit of tang. This stuff is strong too!

That said, I'm primarily a virgina smoker, and there's plenty of great Virginias out there. It's too bad they laid up their hat (those frog Morton tins are adorable just for the art), but don't think you're missing out if you've never had it.

Christened a cheap little Italian poker with it, and it's a great little smoker. Bonus chick tract, all about the fall from eden and the temptation of sin.

I bought some "Jackpot" from smokingpipes the last time I ordered because it was like $1/oz and I thought it was so weird because it smelled like ketchup, and it even kinda smokes like a ketchup. It's not ketchup all the way through, like sometimes the ketchup fades out and it's not so bad, but I can't help but feel like I'm smoking some fastfood which is so weird and is why I've only smoked like 3 bowls of it since I got it last year.

You’re right. I’ve been putting this off for years. Finally yesterday I tried it with a coin cut. Today with a flake. Wow. It’s easy to pack, it expands and steadily burns slow and cool. And it’s so flavorful.

Just tried Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding. I've had the tin for 4 years. I had forgotten I opened it 2 years ago and it had dried out completely. I rehydrated it a couple months ago but only tried it for the first time today. It was fantastic. The flavor was mild, a little peppery with occasional hints of cinnamon. It stayed lit the whole time and burned well. No tongue bite. It's the first time in years I've had a blend like this, I've mostly been smoking some bulk aromatics I need to go through. I forgot how good pipe tobacco can be. The aromatics I've been smoking are garbage compared to this.
