Base layers often use a finer fiber (around 16 microns) while outer layers and mid layers can get away with something a bit more coarse, like 22 microns. Cheap wool, that doesn’t specifically say the type of wool it is (ie, not cashmere, llama/alpaca, merino, qiviut, vicuña) is generally from Shetland sheep and is about 30 microns. There’s also a lanolin allergy, but most washed wool doesn’t contain much, and you’d have to be pretty sensitive to it.
