today i led an expedition to my suburban backyard, hiking a couple hundred feet through grassy terrain, with a total elevation gain of an inch or two above sea level. it was pretty intense, and i'm glad i was able to make the trek back to the house afterward. thankfully, i packed a tarp so i didn't die of heat stroke out there.

I have found some waterfalls that are barely extant - i.e. there's one or two sources on it online or it just is marked on a map, I assume they just aren't gonna be that huge, but still interesting. One used to have a railroad running past it, too bad that isn't still in existence to mitigate the 3.5 mi each way walk, though it is along an old rail bed, but sometimes those get eroded and it becomes a series of 100 ft climbs to eroded ledges to get above a river. I don't think the forest service knows. It's just marked on the topo map as "falls". It's probably small - 10 ft maybe. It's not a major creek, but it is steep, it's basically one of the highest drainages leading down below the state high point. I asked the guy whose dad runs the local mountain education program, he looked clueless.

I live at the edge of a national park and haven't been enjoying it much lately because work has been consuming my life. But I went out for about 4 hours last weekend to clear my head and it was nice. Took this amongst some other things
Pic is from a 5 mile hike i did with my 7 month old and wife. Compared to where I used to live the directions on these new hikes are way more vague and easy to get confused by, in this case I luckily made the right choice, we were walking with another confused hiker and we got to this fork and we reasoned what we thought of each paths possibility and he went on the other because he knew it was backtracing and wpuld guarantee he got back to parking lot, fortunately the side I chose was the correct path and waaaay shorter than retracing our steps>>2874436Funny I hate hiking when theres a bunch of other people but when its just 1 or 2 I find it very pleasant.

>>2876905Yeah. I usually try to chain together multiple hikes in a day. A couple of short ones and a longer one with some drive time in between that gets me in somewhat of a direction I need to go. Yesterday I did Mt Komonji in Kitakyushu. It’s only half a mile but you gain 1000 ft of elevation to get to the summit. Going up wasn’t that bad, just tiring, but going down is hard on the old joints. It was gorgeous up there though.

This was my second ever painting that I did from a photo I took a while ago. I just took my time, accepted my flaws in my ability to render, and had a lovely afternoon sitting on my porch painting it.
