Have any anons ever hiked in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec? I'm talking proper hikes with serious vert and scrambling, not boomer tourist paths. Is the hiking there worth the extra drive time from the US vs. doing the usual hiking vacations in the Adirondacks and Appalachians.
>>2871447Yes many times, my family has a cottage there and I've gone hiking all over the place. 10 years ago it was a lot more remote with just a handful of boomer retirees and forestry workers but now it's full of yuppies on vacation, Jeets and federal forest jannies but there are still some off the beaten track spots. Mont Tremblant National Park has good elevations but the area around Mont Tremblant itself is tourist hell. Everywhere north of Lac Oureau and east towards route 131 / Mastigouche Wildlife Reserve is still uninhabited wilderness filled with hills and low mountains. They're often quite steep and have a lot of slippery bare rock or just a few inches of topsoil so they can be dangerous to climb. Altitudes are about 600meters on average and sometimes drop directly into lakes or valleys with no sloping. The other thing to consider is that mountains are usually separated by large swaths of swamp or bog and you will be eaten alive by mosquitos, horseflies and blackflies. There's a reason nobody lives there. Find a good topography map before you go hike into any lowland areas to make sure it's not just an impassable swamp.
