any recs for a hat with brim ideally somewhere between a bucket hat and a cowboy hat
looking for sun protection from all angles (not baseball cap), but can be put in a bag easily (so not leather/straw)

wtf, I'm sure they last a long time but what makes a hat made out of cotton cost this much?

If it aint leather, it won't take the weather. Make sure you use wax, or oil, and remove the soil. Rain, wind or shine, my leather hat is just fine.

Lifetime guarantee and their quality. They are one of those companies who will send you a new hat if something goes wrong with the one you bought. Also, a specialized product 'invented' for the sailing market. They are made for extremely windy conditions and stay on your head in bad weather.

I have the tilley sun cape hat but they discontinued it.

aren't tilleys all made in China now? i tried one of the Chinese ones and the metal grommets for the string came out. garbage build quality.

They have some that are made in Canada still. I think just the heritage models.

I see, the lifetime guarantee alone makes the price worth it, especially when a company has shown to be serious about it through the years

As a profuse sweater, how would a leather hat stop from getting gooey and moldy?
>>
>>2872290
Usually a fabric band is sewn into the interior.
>>
>>2872290
Wearing a bandana under the hat will help but not much else you can do except cut more holes in the hat for breathability. Or move to a cold climate and sweat less.

Not that anon but I use the varusteleka boonie. It's got a hidden drawstring around the crown so it stays secure on my giant head without needing to use the chin strap.

I bought a pith helmet as a joke (was taking archaeology classes at the time), but it's unironically a great fucking hat.

>full sun protection
>can soak in water for extra cooling
>pith frame acts like a pseudo hard hat--no pain bumping into branches or rocks

Are you an Asian woman? Why are you afraid of sunshine? I never use sunscreen either, a full brim hat is good enough.

>>2872177
Summers in Arizona I use a straw cowboy hat I bought at a farm store for $30. I used shoe glue to add a used sweatband. If I'm going somewhere cooler or with potentially bad weather I use a truck tarp Aussie hat. I used leather boot laces to add stamped straps to both.

still looking to fit it into a bag tho, so will need something that can be folded up/made smaller when needed

>Are you an Asian woman? Why are you afraid of sunshine?
some of us have european ancestry, patel. if you interact with family regularly, as a caucasoid, you'll notice the pattern of elderly relatives routinely going under the knife to get pieces of cancerous skin removed.
i dunno about those anons, but i kind of treat it like "don't drink to excess" and "wear a helmet on the motorcycle".
>>
>>2872482
>Are you an Asian woman? Why are you afraid of sunshine?
Partly for not having to use/carry sunscreen, but also for heat. The single biggest thing keeping you cool in heat is keeping sun off your skin. If you regularly go /out/ (and work) in 100+ highs you need all you can get. Bedouin mode.
And wide brim hats dont work on your lower face and neck in the morning/afternoon even full sombreros have trouble unless you face the right way. And even harder to do if you are doing work bending over and shit.

Melanoma is caused by habitual use of sunscreen and other chemicals dumb boomers put on their skin and poor diet, which reacts with uv rays. It's a failure of the lymphatic system because it's been clogged. It's not the sun's fault. Most of the melanoma cases I know, the growth wasn't even in exposed areas. Furthermore, the japs discovered putting olive oil on after exposure reduces antioxidants, cancerous cells, etc by over half.

>>2872499
>Beduin mode
Remind me what the average IQ of a dune coon is? They cover the face to protect from sand not sun. Larperators wear those smegma scarves to look cool. Unless it's soaked it won't cool them off, it just insulated the arteries in the neck which is dumb. Besides which, you wearing charcoal grey polyester in the heat is not going to keep you cooler than a khaki safari shirt. And you look like an antifa troon starting forest fires.

>Melanoma is caused by habitual use of sunscreen and other chemicals dumb boomers put on their skin
i've been saying this for years. zinc oxide is TOXIC and not only will it give you cancer but it is also responsible for autism. there's a reason our ancestors practiced perineum sunning, and why you should be doing it every day.
see:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352409X19305371

i don't know if it's so much the sun's fault as much as it is the loss of the genetic pathway for gadusol synthesis hundreds of millions of years ago. our rat-like mammal ancestors were adapted to a nocturnal foraging lifestyle to avoid predation by therapods. all other vertebrates produce this molecule to protect them from UV damage, but not mammals, unfortunately.
it got worse when we gradually lost the fur that once covered our skin, and even worse when us ubermensch lost our melanin pigmentation.
that is, unfortunately, the white man's burden.

thanks for sharing your ideas though. always great to chat with a fellow space cadet.
>>
>>2872506
I don't think it's the zinc oxide necessarily. Most sunscreens are full of other carcinogens like benzine compounds. J&j had a multimillion dollar recall for sunscreen in 2020. But nobody heard about it because of covid.

>link
I'm not sure what a poop knife has to do with butthole suning. However there are photoreceptors in the testicles.

>always great to chat with a fellow space cadet.
See you in Agartha

>>2872305
And if you're going to go Bedouin mode, at least try to look cool like Laurence of Arabia. Then capture a wild donkey to ride.
>>
>>2872504
Bedouins do cover their face for sun, not just sand, but also for uv protection, for preventing moisture loss from wind, and for insulation from heat especially when the air temp is above body temp. I do the same things, and really I have to cover up to avoid sunscreen and not burn. That photo isnt me anyway. You should stop stressing about antifa bogeymen so much.
>>
>>2872506
There's been actual clinical research done and it's found that Neutrogena, which uses avobenzone instead of zinc oxide, is both more effective AND much safer than zinc-based sunscreens. The only real downsides are price and that it doesn't last as long but IMO it's worth it for the benefits.

>>2872305

Have you considered going Canadian, anon? I keep a field maneuvers cap with my hunting gear. It doesn't have a huge brim but it's light, breathable, can be soaked to cool down, rolled and stuffed in a pocket.

>wide brimmed

nigga you just described a boonie hat
>>
You'll have to pick a compromise due to your constraints. Straw hats are the best hands down for direct sun and ventilation but cannot fold. Boonie hats are great at blocking sunlight and are packable but dont have great ventilation. A trucker hat has great ventilation and packs well but doesn't block much direct sunlight. You'll have to pick a quality you are willing to sacrifice.

Get a Squashy from Barmah Hats, they have a spring in the brim so you can fold them down for storage but they just pop back into shape after. It's still leather though so you obviously don't want to crush the absolute shit out of it in a pack that's crammed to the tits. And they come in kangaroo leather, mine is cow though so i don't know if kangaroo is superior or not

If you want to avoid leather entirely though just get a Tilley hat, they last forever
>>
>>2873983
The little fucker is already chipped by the government, there's nothing I can do to protect him any more
>>
>>2872245
I own two myself and both are made in Canada. The fully cotton ones are made in Canada I believe, it's the synthetics that come from China
>>
>>2874058
I have one of those in kangaroo leather, and it's great. I originally only bought it to use for cowboy action shooting and going to country music concerts, but it's been great on hikes too. Maybe a cotton hat would be lighter, but it's nothing that bothers me.
>>
Nice coincidence that this thread was up. I came to /out/ today specifically looking for hat recommendations and ended up ordering a Tilley T3 Classic (the Canadian made cotton one). They're on sale for $80 USD currently.
