I'm here, but I'm gonna find myself homeless in the next few months, what do I need to be a hobo? So far I have
>tent
>backpack
>two ponchos
>a few tarps
>a butane stove
>sleeping bag
>tent fold up mattress
Thing is I'm not sure I can carry all this on my back at the same time, at least not without walking extremely slowly.
I'm mildly disabled and broke my spine a few years ago and I'm worried about being bogged down with gear, especially considering my tent is a large, pop-up tent that doesn't dissassemble into parts
>just use your car
If I use my car the local cops will take it off me, being poor and homeless is not allowed in Ireland and they'll take everything off me

So should I get a new tent? or is there a backpack that I can get that will allow me to carry a tent and mattress easily, even if I'm using a crutch to walk?

Thanks anons, I'm hoping you guys can help me plan my homelessness a bit better cos I've not been camping in years
>>
any religious monasteries willing to put up with you?
>>
In the US, you'll frequently see people living on the street hauling around their possessions in one of those folding cargo wagons like the one in picrel. I would imagine it's much more convenient than hauling it all on your back, using a stolen shopping cart, and so on.

I would think about self-defense items, if being homeless in Ireland is anything like in the US. Also a way to charge your phone. Large water canteen.

Not likely, they don't work like that anymore, all ''social enterprises'' have been taken over by NGOs who mostly just throw money and houses at third worlders.
If you're Irish you're a 2nd class citizen now
>>2872511
A wagon like that would make hitch-hiking difficult and also make you look like you're perma-destitute. I'll be hitch hiking between cities trying to find accomodation.
Also I can't push a cart and walk with a crutch

citizens info spend 18 months trying to get me disability after I broke my back, they were baffled that I kept being denied it. The guy I was dealing with said the welfare are coming out with more and more decisions like this especially when the person is an Irish national. We're just 2nd class citizens in our own country now
>Where the fuck did you hear that?
like above, ukrwandians get to drive around in SUVs with no tax or NCT and it's no problem, you ever tried doing that as an Irish person? I have an 18 year old shitbox that struggles to get past the NCT every year and it's 2 months out of date, the pigs will 100% throw the book at me if I'm caught sleeping in it

this is the go-to insult against Irish these days, usually by foreigners. It used to be you'd be accused of not being white online, now you're accused of not being Irish.
I suspect you're the foreigner m8, or at the very least a Dubhuman west brit

Much of the west has endless stone walls like this and few trees, once you get into the midlands though there's loads of forests and there's trees down every road.
It's a geographical thing

Do you live in a city that hands out those wagons at taxpayer expense? Because most homeless everywhere I've ever lived just use stolen shopping carts.

The trees were largely removed over the years to clear way for farmland, most of the country is fields for cows and the trees are either in forests or along roads or boundaries now

Ireland outside the city is 90% agricultural land, most of which is used for grazing

I'm in hawaii and stuck without a car and parents are oblivious asshats that call the cops if I have a drink, any help with jungle guide or staying comfy? pours rain and I can't just stay one place since no water and stuff Im considering moving to another island to find work or go to school again but it would likely be too hot there, can't seem to get a break and I'm still working a job. I draw to get by emotionally and to sit in ac comfortably, I can not believe how difficult it is to find a work/transportation /food exchange for being a farm hand or nursery worker, it doesn't make much sense still after so many years

Also you expect me to fight off 2-3 pigs while I've a crutch in the other hand because my spine is busted? They'll crucify me, the Irish are 2nd class citizens in our own country now the gardai will throw the book at me to the fullest extent they can

it gets really cold at night due to ground conduction. You are going to have a rough time in winter when you need to use the shelters, they're like open air drug spaces where I live. Homeless also love to rob the other homeless as well. What matters is how close you are to food. Feel sorry for you man

IIRC in Ireland you can also fish without a license unless you're salmon fishing.

Gardai won't do shit, keep it parked in a Tesco parking lot and move it every 2 days or so you'll be grand. You are severely overestimating them especially in towns, they won't even respond to violent crimes let alone do patrols beyond traffic checks and speed traps.

I was semi-homeless in the west for a few months and never once saw a Guard. Hang around towns with colleges and try to pass as a student and you'll have no questions access to bathrooms and discounted food. You can probably even park your car somewhere around and hang around on campus while looking for accommodation.

I would actually really recommend against rough sleeping outdoors if you can because you'll get robbed or worse by Knackers, drunk lads or Romanians eventually. Any park or public area you can imagine to camp in will also have other homeless people and are generally where Knackers gather to drink and fight, if a place looks desolate it probably is for good reason. Also farmers all have shotguns and might take pot shots at you to scare you off.

The worst thing about Ireland in this situation is the climate and the lack of outdoor spaces in general. The only places where you could safely camp out at night without fear of getting bottled would be really remote isolated spots in the middle of nowhere that are difficult to get to.
>>
>>2873554
There's also an important question of logistics: there is a dearth of free public bathrooms in Ireland especially in rural areas. That's why I really recommend haunting college towns because at least you can shit, shave and wash yourself in the sink in a disabled jacks without any scrutiny. If you try that in a shopping center or a pub you'll have security battering the door.
>>
>>2872498
Make a floating homeless barge and send yourself down the Shannon. I don't entirely understand why you think the gards will take your car off you, but if you strap barrels to it to make it float then its a motor vessel and sleeping in it is fine.
In all seriousness though it depends what county you're in. My plan has always been to find Coillte land or a national park not far from a city and live from there and collect the dole. You should definitely try get your hands on a solar panel charger for your phone. Check donedeal or adverts for a tent that you can break down I've seen people getting rid of them for free the odd time because with your crutch and a backpack one of those pop up tents is going to be a ball ache to carry. Good luck, try to embrace the absurdity of living in modern day Ireland, place is a kip.
>>
Literally illegally enter America and live homeless there around the PNW away from cities and towns. If you get into the Rainbow circuit they'll take care of you for life.

I was obviously joking about the car raft but maybe you're slightly autistic or something? I don't know. But yeah if what you're planning is to sleep somewhere very out of the way I'd reccoment looking for a solar powered phone charger it could be very helpful and they can be quite compact. I've no experience being homeless here but I have hiked and camped around a lot of the country. What are you planning to do for food/money? Are you going to keep your car somewhere even though you can't use it or are you planning on selling it? If you're going to be a moany prick to people who try to help you on the internet you may not be cut out for life as a crippled homeless guy, but then again being a moany prick is how I'd characterise most of the people I know who are from the west ;)
>>
>>2873807
Decathlon sells portable solar panels and power banks for like 30 quid
>>2873792
Fuck around campus then, the student unions are all run by virtue signalling libs so even if you come clean about being homeless while disabled they might give you access to the food bank and explicitly tolerate you bumming around campus as long as you don't stink or cause problems

I bummed around NUIG for a few months a year after graduating there and never got hassled by security even the odd time I hung around at night. If you wash and keep to yourself you can convince security you're a grad student and you forgot your ID if they ask (they probably won't)

If you have a laptop, some books and a notepad you can take over a classroom in the evenings and the cleaners won't cause a hassle because they'll think you're a grad student doing research or whatever.

Where do you guys find spots to wild camp in Ireland? I want to get /out/ but I'm a terminally online NEET from Dublin and I don't exactly get out exploring a lot. Are there any spots you guys can share?

The spot I've linked here below has 3 or 4 camp sites that a scouts club help maintain w/clearings in the forest and camp fires already built, only 1-2 minutes from where you could park your car. A friend showed it to me a few years ago. Other than this one spot I don't know anywhere else in the country.

Ireland has one of the lowest % of forest coverage of anywhere in Europe(11% woodland, 9% of which is commercial forestry, so 2% natural forestry).

It is way easier to be homeless in a city so that is where you are going to end up. You can find and collect a lot of garbage you 'need' just by scrounging, and a dumpster dive results in a meal whereas a stove doesn't conjure up calories out in a field. Sleeping bag, tent, and the rest can go into ciggies and booze.

The only thing you will experience that is close to Thoreau's or Kerouac's adventure will be the best sex of your life. Vagrants, vagabonds, drug addicts, all fantastic lovers. So long as you aren't a man of abstinence or too picky about whose or which hole is being used.
>>
>>2872498
>>2872558
Come up north and try. Also, if you ever start making money, save up for a boat you can live in ASAP. You don't want to be living on the streets with a bad back. You can get one worthy of living on for about 3-4 grand if you're lucky, but it just wont be fancy. You can sell em on and buy better boats if you scrape up some more. Plus you can have boats fitted with a stove. You can live comfortably and very cheaply, the dole will get you by if you're smart about it. And you can fish. Free food! If you get a boat while in the north, make sure you have it in the Erne so you can go cross border. Always keep your options open
>>
>>2874470
I'm in Fermanagh. Some of us locals like to camp down the Erne on the Islands. Especially for fishing and wildfowling. It's great. Haven't done it in years though and you need a boat. Or you can just camp on the shore, either. Obviously that's not close to you but i've met random dubs down the lough, so maybe it is worth it for you guys idk

You find them by being familiar with the landscape and knowing the country outside the pale, or outside towns. There is an infinite amount of places good for camping. Take an interest, open your eyes, son. This is God's own country

Attributing relevance to statistic measures like '75% white irish' demonstrates a lack of understanding of populations. There is a mean age for reproduction in humans. Those who are unlikely to reproduce anymore are part of the surveyed population but do not allow assessment of a trend. You have to look at either the subset of the population that can be assumed reasonably to reproduce or look at the trend and extrapolate it exponentially.
You're fucked.

It's also super depressing, because Ireland used to be covered in temperate rainforest. In the spots it was kept, it's a unique type of ecosystem really only found in a couple places on Earth. I recommend you look into the history yourself. There have been various revival efforts with some success. Ireland's characteristic rolling hills of grazing areas with flocks of sheep and centuries old stone fences are a new construction.
>>
>>2875850
>>2872905
Like Britain it was already pretty deforested by the iron age, especially the central plain in Meath, east Connacht, southern Munster and a chunk of Ulster. However much of the island was still covered with large temperate rainforests similar to the PNW into medieval times. In one medieval manuscript they say that a squirrel could travel from Leinster to Clare without ever touching the ground.

The main problem with trying to rewild Ireland is that almost all the land is held by small landowners making large scale revitalization efforts difficult and insanely costly. The government subsidizes unprofitable farming to a scale that isn't seen elsewhere in the EU or US; if you have a handful of sheep the state will keep you afloat with subsidies even if wool costs pennies per kilo.
>>
Shit like this makes me realize how lucky I am to live in the USA. I live out of my car while camping for extended periods just for fun. I enjoy just chilling with no responsibilities in nature all day long just surviving like man is meant to. It's totally legal. Lots of nice camp grounds with free shitters just set up everywhere for people to enjoy at no cost.
>>
>>2876411
They subsidise small farms to keep them from going bust and ended up on the dole with one hand, and on the other hand they charge them over 40% tax and regulate them into poverty, keeping basically everyone who isn't a money laundering public servant perpetually on the poverty line
>>
>>2876707
When I lived in Ireland I was mates with 2 farmers on both ends of the spectrum. One had an unprofitable sheep farm that the family kept running simply because of state subsidies, the other was a cattle farmer in a Gaeltacht who did everything under the table and had a million ways to circumvent revenue.

Tbh Ireland's tax is not that bad by EU standards. In Belgium for example there's almost no difference between a minimum wage and a white collar salary after tax because of tax bracketing. I was working in a shop before getting an office job and although in theory I should earn 1000 euro more per month in reality I only get like 200 more after tax. Across the EU though you are basically punished for earning more than minimum wage or not being on the dole.
>>
>>2877051
Belgium has the same problem with agricultural subsidies. They're generally allocated by land size, so a farmer with lots of land gets a lot of subsidies. That's why you see hectares upon hectares of pastures even though milk isn't worth anything anymore.
>>
>>2876411
Yeah, I'm friends with a sheep farmer here in the US, family farm. Says he wished it was like over in Ireland here, he would be able to run the farm off of wool alone because of subsidies. Not mention other things like the government paying you to maintain stone fences.
