It was the first time I've seen it, and it freaked me the fuck out because it happened after I'd gone to bed in my tent. Albino deer. That patch of forest was incredibly pristine, looked like elves would live in a place like that. Wanted to camp there, but I was overcome with a creepy feeling about the place once sunlight started to go. Felt like I had to get out of there immediately, so I packed up in a rush to get out of there and stayed at a nearby clearing instead.

I was sitting on a hill facing south overlooking a bay in western Ireland. I noticed a sudden light across the bay and stared across it, I then saw a white orb rise from the horizon across the bay and rise in a 90 degree arc. There's an outdoor park I used to live beside that is right outside my little city that is great for lots of walking trails, and I especially liked going there on rainy days since hardly anyone would be out walking the trails.
So rainy day when I was 19 I walked to the trails to enjoy some time in nature. On this particular trail I was on had a left hand bend that would eventually lead to a sort of fork in the trail and had a bench right beside the fork. When the bench came in to view I noticed a kid who looked to be around the age of 14 sitting on the bench with his pants around his legs jerkin' it in the rain. We briefly locked eyes as he attempted to cover up what he was doing. So I just turned around and went back that way I came so I could go down a different trail.

I wish I had "Weirder" experiences while outdoors, but this is still plenty weird. Also it's a fun story to tell

A tick infested Lothlorien. It was truly spectacular though. There was no grass, only moss and ferns. As light started to fade, the fallen deadwood began to look like it was constructed into shapes, gates, structures, faces. The dark wood stood out against the green foliage in uncanny ways all of a sudden. A really magical, fairy tale looking place. Too magical, I felt like a trespasser.
The moon was orange that night. A helicopter flew by to check me out while I was setting up camp by the edge of it. And a fox in the forest started its banshee screech every time I turned my flashlight on inside my hammock. I'd go there again, but wouldn't dare stay overnight.

Idk if this counts but I know of someone who ran into a "worker" on a trail. Hi vis vest inconspicuous and all that so they think nothing of it. They keep going along the trail and realize this person seems to be trailing behind them just behind bends. As they start to look at the guy stuff starts to not line up. No tools, a bit rough looking, and the vest has different colors then the normal epa people who are out there occasionally. Long story short the guy starts running at them but fucks off when they start shouting and getting closer to the parking lot. They never find the guy and it turns out the police had a bunch of open cases of a similar MO.
I think a lot about what the end goal of this "worker" was and if they are still out there.

Game trails follow most roads, our do. I walk the trails hunched over swinging my arms. The whole time I'm doing this it's killing me I'm laughing so hard. I run into the forest and hide when they come back. "I saw it over there!!". Sometimes if I can find asomething I'll do a tree knock.

the only strangest stuff experienced outdoors was this incident in some woods roughly two years ago... i don't go deep into the forest a lot, only sometimes with family or friends to walk and burn some calories or just kill time
that day started normally with conversation and no health issues, (like bad sleep or poor diet)... so while they took a phone call, I stepped away to look around, going far enough that I couldn’t hear their voices anymore
i was looking around when I heard from a distance this prolonged chant saying my name…in the first seconds I didn't even realize it was my name because I was distracted and thought it was some animal like a fox, deer or bird making sounds, but then when i reacted I knew it was my name being chanted in a human manner... it gave me this strong chill towards where it came from
there was some fear but since I could still see the others it was 'okay'... I went back and asked if they had heard any animals or something (without saying my experience) and one said yes, that heard something but couldn't make it out
later when I told my family my dad said those things are like hallucinations, pretty common when people go into the woods and aren’t used to being ALONE in nature... I trust that explanation because I don't believe in anything 'paranormal'... it took me a few weeks to really move past it though
right now while telling it in this much detail i actually felt a bit of fear again.. I mean, my name isn't three, or four easy words an animal could just pronounce.. but it really was the weirdest thing that’s happened to me outdoors here in Estonia

The weirdest thing that happened to me was hearing a whistle calling to me. High then low like "come here" calling to me. I followed the sound with my dog until we came to a clearing and the whistle stopped. My dog took off and left me there. I left and found my dog back at home on the porch. I remember weird stuff from my childhood. When we were kids, my sister and me went to a camping trip with our mom.
We got lost somehow and it was very scary. We wandered around in the dark forrest all night, but couldnt find our way back. The next day we were found and our mother was worried about our health.
My sister was malnourishened. So we needed my doctor, but wow, I cannot believe my mom stooped so low...
My mom called my doctor and said to him "What's the most accurate measurement for weighing?"

And just like that, my mom said "Yes. When can my son and my daughter can take it?" and the doc said "Today at 2pm."

So, I didn't bother taking a shower and so did my sister too, so I had to get into a special swimming suit(tight pants...Ugh).

My sister said "Can I pull my hair down to a ponytail?" The doctor said "No."

Last year I had a mountain lion walk into my camp and sit down. I didn’t notice it until it was sitting looking at me from about 10 ft away. Scared the holy shit out of me. I yelled at it, but it didn’t seem to mind at all. I started backing up and it would walk forward every time I did. Seriously thought I was going to have to fight this motherfucker. So I just charged it hoping I’d scare it away. It didn’t move. We just stared at each other, literally 5ft apart. I was contemplating my options totally at a loss for what to do when it just turned and walked off.
Never had anything even remotely happen like that in my life, and I spend a lot of time outdoors. I’ve never even seen a mountain lion other than a quick glance while driving a few times. I just thought, WTF was that all about. Later at night was the craziest lightning storm I’ve ever been in too. I just sat in camp, drinking a beer getting soaked. Wild weekend!

It's not really /out/, but years ago I was at an In-n-Out north of LA that was near some hills and I watched a huge mountain lion casually walk through the busy parking lot with zero fucks given. All I could think of was the "jesus christ it's a lion get in the car!" meme, which I guess kinda shows how long ago this happened.

I was quail hunting alone long ago on some land my father owned. Wasn't having much luck when I topped a small hill and looked out across a small valley to another small hilltop. Walking in circles on the other hilltop about 200 yards away was a large coyote. I watched him walking in a small circle for a few minutes until he noticed me. As soon as he saw me, he took off running right at me down the small hill into the valley. I thought Oh shit. He was running at me and making this horrible high pitched growl. Wasn't much I could do but watch him running at me until he got about 30 yards from me and I raised my 12 gauge and sighted in on his face/chest. First couple of blasts only slowed him down with the birdshot until he was less than 10 yards from me and I blasted him in the head. He collapsed in front of me missing most of the top of his head.
I left him there and ended my quail hunting for the day. Never knew what set him off. Never seen any pups or anything. I think he was walking in circles and had some kind of disease/parasite infection that made him attack me.

When I would sneak out in the middle of the night as a kid I'd always from cars behind trees. I'd try to do that crafty "step around the tree as the car passes to stay invisible" thing but it was easy to fuck up. I wonder just how many people, driving on a pitch black mountain road late at night, saw a small humanoid figure emerge from the edge of the woods as they passed.

Not a very exciting story but I figure it meets the thread criteria. When I was living in a cabin out in the ass end of nowhere it was late at night and I was going to sleep when suddenly I was jolted by an extremely loud screech/scream. It sounded like a halfway between screeching car tires and some kind of shrill shriek. I’m quite familiar with the area, and I can’t say I’d heard that animal noise before, nor did I ever hear it again. The direction it came from, well, all the roads are dirt/gravel. And car tires don’t screech on dirt. Nevermind that those roads back there had a lot of sharp turns, so nobody in their right mind would be doing something silly like that at that hour. Still don’t know what it was.

I got attacked by a Western Capercaillie when I was snowshoeing in the forest in winter a few years back. Sadly my phone fucked up and crashed while I was filming him.

Anyway, the bird started growling at me and for a split second I literally thought he was a wolf (there is a known wolfpack in that exact forest that has been killing lots of livestock). Then he did his whole shtick of walking towards me in a zigzag pattern, pausing every few seconds to scream at me before approaching again. I shouted at him to leave and even prodded him with my ski pole, but he wasn't interested. Since he just wouldn't leave me alone I ended up retreating ~300-400m through the woods until I reached the trail again. He kept watching me as I retreated, then he would fly back up to me and watch some more until I was further away. He stopped following me once I reached the trail.
And no, I did not hurt him.

I had a similar experience with a coyote. It was missing a bunch of fur,and looked like it had been stung in the face by a million bees. It just kept doing circles in front of my car, until it took a huge shit, and ran into the woods. The whole episode went on for about five minutes. It would have been pretty scary if I was on foot.

I really want to get y'all's idea as to what this could've been. The three predators native to Dixie that I know of are coyotes, black bears, and mountain lions. Still though, I saw no tracks in the mud around other than my own and my dog's. I was thinking maybe a mountain lion, since they have similar tracks to dogs. Coyotes wouldn't have been able to drag that 7-8 feet up a tree, and I'd have seen a lot more dog tracks. The branches were so dense that there's no way a Black bear could've gotten it that close to the trunk without breaking the branches around it. Also no tracks.
A mountain lion is the only plausible explanation. Although I think I would've seen more entrails around and trauma to the leg. If it was though, why would it drag part of a fresh kill away from the rest of the carcass (leaving it alone in a forest crawling with coyotes) to a tree with a dog screaming its head off 15 feet away, and then just leave it there untouched? It just doesn't make sense. I also don't know if a mountain lion with paws the size of my dogs would've been able to take down a mule deer of this size.

Anyway after I took down my camp in record time and looked around for a couple of minutes, I noped the fuck out of there. I'm sorry for not grabbing a pic, my phone had died overnight. I know 'pics or it didn't happen' and all, but I swear on my mother every word of this is true.

Don't know about strange but it was one of the cooler skies I remember seeing.

Strangest thing was camping in the Richmond Ranges in the NZ South Island, only moonlight, dead quiet.
I see a Massive pure white Barn Owl glide silently right over my head and across the valley. We don't have any Barn Owls.

In Canterbury, in a tent, in bed, 3am, silent. 2ft away from my head a Possum screamed full volume. Scared the shit out of me until I realised what was going on.
They're a real pain in the ass, I had one being nosey and pushing against the side of my tent so I punched it. It ran up the tree and started shitting on my tent so I yelled at it, it jumped trees across the stream and just laughed at me all night and I got no sleep.

I was camping next to the same stream in the bushes and I saw a guy come down the stream on a dirt bike, he hit a rock and nearly fell off, got off his bike, walked over to the big rock and started pointing at it and cussing it out, kicked it, hurt his foot and left.

In the middle of nowhere way up in the mountains with no tracks for miles, I saw something wedged in some boulders, a little container. I opened it and it just had a notepad and a pencil. It had peoples names written in it and some drawings. Really perplexed me but I decided it was a geocache thing and put it back.

Found a crabs leg and a pile of sea shells way up in the highlands far from shore.

Was driving up to a camp site on a remote station track around 11pm in the dark, came round a corner and a deer was stood in the middle of the road facing me, on two legs. I thought it was an alien.

I've had intense horny boiseggs with a naked Peruvian in the pitch black darkness at 2 am. We finished and went on to see a weird guy without light coming in our direction.

At this point we only wondered proceding to the camp, over a bridge into the absolute middle of nowhere in a swamp. It started raining so I decided to stop then suddenly this guy came at us out of the darkness, I assumed defensive position mistaking him for a deer at first, then he backed off and we walked very fastly into the other direction towards the city.

He has been definitely stalking us and possibly even observed the session from the darkness. We walked through the city for hours to return to our camp in the forest from the other side, being happy to not have went there right away and therefore not revealing it to the stalker.

We saw him again the next day in afternoon in that forest park near Görlitz. He must be either horny or a homeless junkie. But at least not a serial killer. Always expect the unexpected.

I've been in forests without light a lot but never encountered anyone like that before.

There are resident cougars in wilderness areas in the east coast. Not enough to constitute a breeding population but some of them will wander thousands of kilometers and wind up all the way across their former range. My parent's cottage in the Laurentian mountains in Quebec had a resident cougar stalking around for a couple years before disappearing, it was being investigated by forest jannies. Never got reported on because it would've scared tourists away though.

Weirdest thing I've seen /out/ was the lady at a beach near me. This beach is 5km down a steep hill. She was overweight, had 3 kids with her, 2 dogs, a coffee in one hand and a beer in the other. One of her dogs (something small and yappy) was really interested in meeting my dachshund. The other (a golden) was acting very jealous.

I did not stay long.

She was off peeing on a day trip and came back shaken up, she told me all about a voice to her right and then a voice to her left, a handful of meters away, basically like a person putting on a creepy voice and not making any sense besides it having a melodic kind of teasing/c'mere type of tone, gravelly ugly voice. Nothing to hide behind nearby, mostly flat ground and ferns, and the sound was close like she'd have seen the speaker if it had been visible. Freaky freaky stuff. I talked to her immediately after and instantly felt like I missed a genuinely once in a lifetime freaky event. Pacific Rim National Park Reserve btw

I took a loop trail solo up in Canada once and right around the furthest spot from the trailhead, I'm just in my groove looking at the forest and then ANGRY GROUSE out of fucking nowhere charges me. I jumped sky high and freaked out just because it was completely unexpected. ran a few paces, then realized it was pretty cool and there was no way it could hurt me, so I tried to take pictures and followed it as it retreated into the forest trying to get a decent shot until the brush got too thick.
I'm sure it was a mom guarding a nest? iunno, are male grouse territorial enough to charge a giant person?

i was camping with some friends at this reservoir area when i was like 14
theres a old old road that goes through the area but its not maintained so you need a lifted 4x4 to get through one side, the other side was sometimes really bad too
the place is completely packed with people now but back in the 90s basically no one went up there
we were camping and some guy made it up there somehow in a really shitty old honda accord or something like that
and he was freaking out the entire time just screaming his head off and he had a dog and I think he killed the dog while he was going crazy because of the sounds

another time i was at a swimming hole and that kids would go to a lot in the summer, we went down to it and there was this incredibly bad smell
we were looking around on the rocks to see what it was and we found a black contractor bag that had washed down the river and got caught on the shore
we took turns trying to dare each other into opening the bag until one kid grabbed it and yanked it and a giant pile of gore spilled out of it
i tell myself it was a deer body but I dunno, I didn't get a really good look and it was pretty undiscernible exactly what was in there and kind of think sometimes it might have been a human body because it was fleshy more than furry

Huh I’ve always felt the opposite and appreciated deer even when they’re being weird motherfuckers. If I see deer in my area, even at night, then there’s probably not anything scarier than they are around. They have a really weird presence for a prey animal, though. Some kind of majesty that somehow doesn’t make sense for them to have, just being forest leaf eaters. I always feel like they’re watching out for me too.
They spook me easily but do they -really- attack for no reason? I mean, I can imagine somebody saying

I was hiking along and this colored thing just stuck out off the trail about 20 feet, not even a popular trail. I walk over to it and it was this. At first I was "haha wtf?" then it was just early quiet so I took a pic and ran back to the parking lot. Haven't gone back since.

Seven miles in, in the middle of the trail, sat a bear can without a lid with a child's sleeping bag stuffed inside.

I am 90% sure we slept in the same spot since I've seen that white deer around a lot.
