From my understanding if it's solid and white all the way through it's good. Just make sure it's a puffball because that only works for puffballs. If it's a puffball, nice find, it's a big one.

only the bottom is solid white, the top is like some jelly feeling beige stuff. idk

It should have a "firm" marshmallow like texture throughout. That one is past edible.

That puffball would have been good a week and a half ago

I have a lot of these growing in my front yard. Which is 392 acres lol. But still, I see them all the time. I knew they were edible but never actually tried one. How do you cook them? Do you cook them? Anything that looks similar but poisonous? I’m in Northern California. Like northern, Northern California.

Puffballs are pretty easy to ID. Round to pear shaped. The outside color and texture can vary by species. But if you cut any of them in half when they're fresh and they'll be a solid even white all the way through. The skin is soft and easy to cut. They're only edible when young, firm and solid white. If it has a "mushroom shape in the middle, it's not a puffball. If it's solid and firm but not white when cut in half, it's not a puffball. It should also smell pleasant and mushroomy. If it smells off, like gasoline, cut grass, antiseptic or peroxide, don't eat it.

>How do you cook them?
Wash off all of the dirt and/or debris and then pat them dry. Cut off the bottom most piece, it usually has small bits of dirt that the mushroom has grown around. Slice or dice the mushroom and dry saute get some color before adding butter salt and garlic. They are also good in most recipes that call for mushrooms. They have a very mild flavor.

>Anything that looks similar but poisonous
Amanita eggs - if you cut what you think is a puffball in half and there's a mushroom shape in the middle, it's an amanita egg, not a puffball.
Earthballs - they're mush firmer and when you cut it in half it'll be brown to purple.
Earth Stars - hard outer surface when young, not white when cut in half
Pisolithus - not easily mistaken, but often come up at he same time. Club shaped, very firm when young, slimy and oily when not. Cut in half, the inside is divided into cells and are black to purple to brown.
