I have a lot of these growing in my front yard. Which is 392 acres lol. But still, I see them all the time. I knew they were edible but never actually tried one. How do you cook them? Do you cook them? Anything that looks similar but poisonous? I’m in Northern California. Like northern, Northern California.

But if you cut any of them in half when they're fresh and they'll be a solid even white all the way through. The skin is soft and easy to cut. They're only edible when young, firm and solid white. If it has a "mushroom shape in the middle, it's not a puffball. If it's solid and firm but not white when cut in half, it's not a puffball. It should also smell pleasant and mushroomy. If it smells off, like gasoline, cut grass, antiseptic or peroxide, don't eat it.>How do you cook them?Wash off all of the dirt and/or debris and then pat them dry.
