I'm planning on going to Orkney for a few days in September. Has anyone been? I'll stay in a hostel for a few nights in Kirkwall and renting a bike.

Come then mate, give me some tips or summat. I'm going to ride to Skara Brae via the Ring of Brodgar and the lochs, then to Orkney brewery for a tour. The day after I think I'm going to cycle to the east of mainland to the beaches. Last day I'm knocking about Kirkwall.

How do you guys cook if you go somewhere with a high fire risk warning at this time of year like Dartmoor? Or do you just go without hot food/drinks/etc?

Swam in the Helvellyn tarn last month. Never disappoints.

Off to the Lake District in September, staying in Ambleside for a few days and hoping to do some day hikes. I'll be in a group of four and the only capable hiker amongst them. Anyone got any decent enough walks around there they'd recommend for beginners?

How crap are they? They won't need to be mountaineers for some of the easier climbs but they will need to be generally fit. The Lakes can get very rainy so make sure they've got proper waterproofs and boots if you go up anything big.
You can hike along the top of the Wastwater screes, it's not that high and very gentle once you're up, with an excellent view of the lake. Otherwise, the easiest and safest thing for beginners is to visit some of the waterfalls around. But so long as they aren't overweight and have sensible clothing, you can definitely go climb some of the hills.

Do you carry a GPS? Not sure it's even worth getting one in the UK. I can read a map and use a compass.
