I'm planning on going to Orkney for a few days in September. Has anyone been? I'll stay in a hostel for a few nights in Kirkwall and renting a bike.

How do you guys cook if you go somewhere with a high fire risk warning at this time of year like Dartmoor? Or do you just go without hot food/drinks/etc?

Off to the Lake District in September, staying in Ambleside for a few days and hoping to do some day hikes. I'll be in a group of four and the only capable hiker amongst them. Anyone got any decent enough walks around there they'd recommend for beginners?

>>2876341How crap are they? They won't need to be mountaineers for some of the easier climbs but they will need to be generally fit. The Lakes can get very rainy so make sure they've got proper waterproofs and boots if you go up anything big. You can hike along the top of the Wastwater screes, it's not that high and very gentle once you're up, with an excellent view of the lake. Otherwise, the easiest and safest thing for beginners is to visit some of the waterfalls around. But so long as they aren't overweight and have sensible clothing, you can definitely go climb some of the hills.

Do you carry a GPS? Not sure it's even worth getting one in the UK. I can read a map and use a compass.

It turns out one of them is apparently pretty fit and keen, I figured doing the Fairfield Horseshoe would be good as a day hike and as it starts and ends in Ambleside it makes the logistics of it easier. I'm mainly going with them because there's a good Thai restaurant. I'll do one of the easier ones with the rest of the group.

One of the group went up with jeans and timberlands on, I warned him it'd be uncomfortable. His wife had to persuade him to take a bag with food and drink in, too. With how good Ambleside is for outdoors stuff I suggested getting some proper boots at least but he wanted to try his own.About 10k in he was saying his knees were hurting, and then for the descent we were moving almost at a crawl. I think he was accidentally walking in a weird way to account for his boots and it made him jar his legs on the route. We ended up being up there for 6hrs because I had to go so slow with him on the way down. I didn't mind, we had nothing else on that day and I think it's a lesson learned for him. I did get some sympathetic looks from other people up on the hill.
