Going out to the lake later this week. I've never been successful fly fishing on still water. What flies should I tie/bring? I've got lots of wooly buggers, a couple articulated flies and a good variety of dry flies and nymphs. I'll be going out on an inflatable raft. So I'll have the opportunity to fish both from that and the shore. I'm planning on bringing my 9' 6w echo and maybe my 10' 3w euro rod. Lake is cold, clear water, rocky. There are bass, sunfish, crappie, rainbow, brown and lake trout, chinook and kokanee salmon and a few others. The salmon will likely be too deep for me to target. They're usually fished by trolling spoons on down riggers. Same goes for the larger trout. But I've caught smaller ones from the shore on spin tackle.
Well I fucked up the wire while reassembling but I think I salvaged it.

Woooo! First ditch pickel! Today, I mostly drove around. I was checking out rivers I haven't fished, water that I knew wouldn't be good today but hoped would be. Thus, it took me a long time to reach my planned destination. This was the first time I brought bass spinning gear to this region, a part of the state I frequently fish with fly gear.I get one bite, ripped my Keitech off. I get another bite and hook up. Reel in the pike. I was elated. This has been a goal fish of mine for years. Fucked up the handling, which I regret.Afterwards, I caught a smallie. Nothing after that. Fished before a storm and didn't fish long.

Fortunately, I did bring a spinning setup with some spinners and spoons. I should have brought a couple swim baits too, but was really planning on focusing on fly fishing, so the spinning setup was a just in case. Spent all day at the lake. Spent most of the day back in a little cove with a good shade tree. Only tree that close to shore for as far as I could see. I got a couple bites but nothing that hooked up. Once it got up into the low 100s I spent most of the mid day swimming or hanging out on the beach. Headed back to the car as the sun was starting to lower, around 6:30. By the time I got back to the car, the sun was behind the mountains and the fish were active. I passed several people fishing from shore catching bass. I spent about an hour throwing two different panther martins, gold blade, black with yellow spots and silver blade, yellow black dots. Tried a couple different spinner baits gold willow with chartreuse and white skirts in a couple sizes and then finished with a silver spoon. Nada.... Meanwhile, as I'm loading up, a dad and his kid show up and pull two 15in spotted bass right out of where I was just fishing. They were using soft plastic shad swim baits. Just didn't have what they wanted. Oh well. It was still very impressive to see those two being caught. Good day on the lake. Hopefully I have better luck next time.

My monthly Smitty's box arrived this weekend. I just got around to opening it today. The beginner pattern is going to be the easiest hopper I've ever tied. Just craft foam, rubber legs and polly yarn. It's called a Meadow Hopper. Materials included: size 10 dry fly hooks, 6/0 uni thread in tan, double sided foam(grey/peach), 2mm indicator foam, rubber legs and a section of polly yarn.

It doesn't compress and flare out hardly at all. In the video, the guy's hair bushed out like elk hair. I got just barely a bit of lift from the very top hairs. And applying more pressure only results in broken thread. Which may be why they provided the dubbing, to cover up the not so elk hair caddis like head.

I'm not sure if they changed the type of hair or of they got a lot of people that ran into the same issue with the deer hair not compressing and flairing out and needed something to cover up the head to make it look neat. I may throw the ones I tied back on the vise and add that collar.

I still use a gen 1 Stradic 2000 for bass fishing. Sedonas will get the work done but they are going to wear out much faster. Lots of the internals like the gears are plastic. Catching big fish and working the drag is going to run it down fast.

Has anyone been throwing urchin or coike lures? I innitially dismissed them as a fishing industry meme but I got some of the clones from ebay and have been slamming 4-7lb bass with them left and right. You can rig them with just a jig head or a 2/0-3/0 wacky worm hook and a vmc half moon wacky weight below it to keep it hook pointed up in the water.

The two together cost me $5 more than my rod XD But I needed to order some lillian material to fix my brother in law's rod and didn't feel like paying shipping for just that $4 item.

Attach the built in leader to a snap swivel and retrieve with a slow start/stop technique. It should make a spiral action in the water.I prefer the three hook variety. No matter where the bass bites or even if they don't fully inhale the lure, you have a chance to hook up. The third hook on the worm's tail will also keep you from getting skunked since other sunfish with smaller mouths will peck at worms. Don't expect to fish these directly in cover like a texas rig even with the "weedless" variety of these worms. Fish around the edge or just above the weeds and you'll play right into the basses ambush strategy.

I also have a 6ft (1.8 meter) UL spinning rod combined with a size 1000 reel spooled in pe 0.3 braid for when the bite is super slow and I'm targeting tiny wrasse or gobies with super tiny finesse plastics primarily in rockpools or marinas. Personally I don't bother going heavier than ML these days because fishing in the Mediterranean keeps getting more brutal every year especially in summer with all the pressure from tourism and overfishing

How friendly/social are you when you go fishing? I usually go fishing with my father just to relax. He sometimes takes a walk to check if people around caught anything and maybe a 2 min chat. Last two times we went to the same spot this guy shows up and won't shut up. Yesterday he even started with the unrequested tips rant and I just kept ignoring him, but after 5 min the old man just told him to get lost.

I try to be friendly to the people next to me because tangling lines during some hot runs of bonita/jack crevalle/bluefish etc. is almost innevitable and you will need someone to net or gaff the fish for you.

I don't meet to many people who are as serious about fishing as I am so when I run into them I find it pretty rewarding to exchange tactics. If I know I'll be in an area repeatedly I also don't hesitate to ask for people's numbers, I know locals from all over I can send a text to if I'm going to be in the area to ask how it's been lately, or to ask if they want to join. Often it goes nowhere but I've had a 3 sentence conversation on the first trip turn into a super valuable info source on later trips.
