First time in CA. Short hike and camp at Barney Lake, Inyo National Forest. Beautiful place. The mosquitos were terrible though.

Yeah the mosquitoes can be rough spring/summer

I've been trying to get my work to transfer me to Tahoe for a year, looks like next year it'll go through. What's the best area to live there and places to explore?

I love the Sierra mostly because I really love waterfalls, and also Sequoia trees. The mountain scenery is generally not my favorite, a lot of the high Sierra is just too gray and lifeless for me, there's still some great areas though, and it's a huge range tons I haven't even seen. I've only spent time there in early Autumn (late September to mid October, fall colors are not that impressive compared to most mountain ranges by the way) and late Spring (late May to early June, goat waterfalls) so I guess I haven't seen the range at its most lush also.

Anyway, favorites, Yosemite is gorgeous of course. Best Sequoia groves are Muir, Giant Forest and Mariposa. Red Slate Mountain, nice colors in that area. Thousand Island and Garnet Lakes are really nice, I think that's where OP is too
