I usually don't bother with boots because they're tedious to put on and I don't roll my ankle in trail runners etc. That said, are cowboy boots ok for /out/? I'm guessing it's blistertown, but at least they must be fast and easy to wear?
>>2874919No
>>2874919Those are designed for working on flat turf or bare dirt.
>>2874946Lol.Not even that.Theyre designed for stirups while you sit in a saddle for an hour then spend 4 minutes on the ground mending a barbed wire fence then youre back in the saddle. The one thing theyre NOT designed for is walking.
>>2874953Ropers are for the ground/pen. Cowboy boots are for riding/stirrups.
>>2874919>I don't roll my ankle in trail runners etcyou don't roll your ankles YETalso cuff height has no effect on ankle stabilitylet me type it againCUFF HEIGHT HAS NO EFFECT ON ANKLE STABILITYyou are only wearing high top hikers because your grandparents didlow cut approach shoes are better in literally 90% of usecases>inb4 muh winteryes high cuffs are nice in winter, that's why I said 90%>>2874953>Theyre designed for stirups while you sit in a saddle for an hour then spend 4 minutes on the groundno they are made for walking
>>2875438>no they are made for walkingThey havent changed in design for 200 years.Theyre a sandal with an upper.Theyre horrible from a podiatry standpoint and cause massive issues ranging from bunions to fallen arches to pinched spinal nerves.Saying that theyre "for walking" is like saying an ox is for "plowing fields".Technically correct but archaic and outdated to the point of being dangerous compared to moderm alternatives.
>>2874919They're like wellies really, but wellies are objectively nicer
>>2875442>podiatryis a memeyou probably wear mid or high top hiking boots and you're lecturing on footwear
>>2874919I spent 3 hours chasing horses in the canadian rockies one time, wearing my cowboy boots. Didn't get blisters and it wasn't super unconfortable. They're not great for hiking cause you can't adjust how tightly they fit around your foot like you can with boots with laces. I only wore the cowboy boots because we had a 10 hour ride ahead of us, and riding in cowboy boots is vastly preferable to riding in hiking boots.
>>2874919>must be fastYou know that joke about cowboys dieing with their boots on? It's because cowboy boots are so tight they are a pain to take off so they sleep with them on. Hell, Frank Zappa wrote a song about how annoying taking off cowboy boots is.
>>2874919they are best if you are going to be in and out of a vehicle/bike/horse/etc and don't need super deep treadflat leather is unironically pretty grippy on most surfaces honestly, just not great for mud which is a good chunk of hiking terrainI personally prefer cowboy boots on gravel and soil, something about the flat sole keeps me from slipping around as the tread settles in other hiking shoes. Sand is hell though, I would derive great pleasure from forcing people to walk across a beach in cowboy boots because they are just that horrible>>2877761People who wear tight boots are larpers, cowboy boots are supposed to be easier to slip in and out of, like a slipper with an upper. If the upper is hugging your leg, you're simply a fatty, simple as.Anyone interested in cowboy boots should get a pair, they're cheap and decent enough for most regular wear to justify having at least a pair around the house. $200 will get you something decent to slip in for a quick jaunt through the woods for a couple hours, just takes a a couple weeks of regular wear to break them in.
>>2874953A lot of what you find today are more like "cowboy style" work boots with a wider toe and flatter stance than an actual riding boot would have, they're popular in the oilfield and similar jobs. I'm not sure I'd want to do serious hiking with constant rough ground or elevation changes in them though
I got a pair of ropers, I think (Red Wing 1155) because I like going to places where country music is played and beer is drunk, and I wanted something to slip on. Used them this summer, walking not more than 15000 steps per day in a city, so hard surfaces.I really liked the last, as it was wide enough for my Frankenfeet. But the looseness around my ankles felt weird. The boots fit well enough, but the shaft was loose. The fit on my feet felt like wearing loafers, but the shaft felt more like carrying dead weight since it's loose. Don't really get that with my regular lace-up boots. Seems to me like you could roll your ankles perfectly well in them. Twice as heavy as my leather shell boots too. Haven't tried the sole enough outdoors to mean much about it, but it seems alright. But they do have attitude in spades, and they're great for slipping on as a summer boot.I wouldn't wear them for walking in difficult terrain, but I could see it working on trails or leisurely strolls.
>>2877747>They're not great for hiking cause you can't adjust how tightly they fit around your foot like you can with boots with laces.Good quality boots, properly broken in, don't need it, and in fact that's what makes them so good, they end up fitting your whole foot like they're custom made instead of relying on tightness in one specific area like laced shoes. I actually started wearing them because of a suggestion on /out/ after I mentioned instep pain and heel blister problems and now they're all I wear unless I'm wearing shorts or really need the tread and waterproofing of a hiking boot.
>>2875438>they are made for walkingupto guys buttshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_Yux4niiO4
>>2878440I've never had blisters in cowboy boots, I wear them almost daily since I was 19, now 27. I'll get blisters on my ankle in lace-ups, even after a few months of regular wear, but a cowboy boot fits well enough after about 2 weeks for me (on my third pair)Won't ever want to go hiking proper in them, I'd eat it if I skid on some mud and walking through sand is impossible, but they're great for city walking if you got decent insoles and have a heel-toe cadence unlike most minorities that flare their toes to the side
>>2874919ive hiked for 5 hours in and out in cowboy boots. its dooable.i did wear a hole in the leather sole, but the boots were quite worn and needed a new sole anyway.>>2874953skill issue.i can walk and run in cowboy boots just fine and have jogged along my friends going on runs.you need well fitted, broken in boots, good socks, quality inserts.
