im 24 and might inherit a farm and house soon, what do i do with it? it used to have horses, cows, chickens, etc, they grew crops in a greenhouse, huge storage barn for machines, several garages for cars, a cabin to rent out for tourists (we get a lot of tourists here in the summer)my grandparents own it, but they are getting old and cant take care of it anymore, they said they are thinking of selling it but offered i take it instead. they estimate they might live there for 1 to 7 more years before they sell it or give it to me. i have 0 farming experience but im willing to learn, i'd probably start off with something easy (chickens?), i love cats so maybe i could be a cat breeder? not sure how economically viable that is. or maybe i just live there and look for a job

You don't have to be a farmer to own a farm, and I'd advise you start with that as your basis for how you're planning on making it work.Step zero is this >>2875077, but,If I were as lucky as you, and I am practically in your position but 3 years after "inheriting" it, I'd get into a profession NOW. Anything that people in the area might need - law, engineering, surveying (what I do), accounting, real estate, nursing, policing, there are probably a dozen other professions you could choose from that rural people need. Work in that field, get good, get licensed, probably go to a state school, and set up shop in your grandparent's town.Then, once you have a stable income and you've gotten to know lots of people in your grandparent's area as clients, think about hiring people to do some farm work, maybe planting some fruit trees in an orchard. Try it yourself first, but don't get emotionally attached to the idea of being the one that picks the fruit from the tree when it's grown. Find out how much time a task takes and learn how to do accounting for the work that others will do on the farm, how much you can pay, and how much you can earn.Or, farming can just be a hobby. But I doubt that, without growing up as a farmer, it'll be your job.
