I just got a bike for free from a neighbour who didn't want it and I still can't gain the courage to cycle down a road, only down the pavement. It is a horrible feeling when you start to develop the same thoughts cyclists do.

I understand how convenient it is to get in the auto at home and stop at the trailhead, but the feeling you get when the truck stops 100 miles from the last gas station and your lift offers you beer and the best of luck just can't be beat. From there it's just a matter of finding a decent bike or a place to put up a hammock. I'm telling you that this whole country is yours. It's your inheritance. You don't need a car, or a train, or a plane ticket to see it all. You just start walking, and eventually you get there. You get places you didn't know existed. Took me a month to get across the country and the only regret I have is taking the bus out of STL instead of walking. Gonna winter here in the rockies then head north.Just hitch, and keep hitching
