Hey frens, im not much an /out/ person, but I took my daughter by the coast and we saw some people fishing into the Atlantic and she thought it looked maybe fun. I probably havent fished since I was a kid, but id like to start and show her how. I dont want to invest a whole lot, and want to avoid a spinner reel for her, cuz she wouldnt be using one when she's older.Im in new england, not far from the ocean, Walden pond, a lake, some rivers.Im coming to you guys for advice because i dont trust a google search. All advertisements. I figure some of you guys are anglers. Please, aside from a license, what do I need to get started?

Two questions. Do you have a boat? How old are we talking? It matters.The big thing people whiff on when getting kids into fishing/hunting is usually not getting them enough action and focusing on the kids instead of just bringing them along on what they were doing anyway. An 8 year old is going to have a much better time at a busy dove field or watching beagles chase rabbits than they will sitting in a cold as balls deer stand thirty feet off the ground scared shitless. Fishing isn’t any different. Focus on pan fish and keep the tempo as high as possible. If you’re allowed to set multiple lines cut one up and toss it out and if you’re lucky they’ll get a good sized catfish for a big score. I wouldn’t really try to start a kid off on something like fly fishing until they’re a teen personally. 10-12 I’d throw them in the boat with live bait and haul in some bass. If you’re far enough north maybe rent out one of those fancy ice fishing set ups or take them crabbing. Thats always a party pleaser.
