We are so unbelievably fucked that our pivoting to doing absolutely nothing is still almost as bad in the short- and medium-term as us continuing as we are; the problem is that the status quo will give us an even worse long-term outcome because the can eventually will run out of road, and then we'll stop polluting with aerosols whenever civilization meets its end anyway. Look up the climate faustian bargain (basically an expansion of what I've said here) and then think long and hard about ever bringing a child into the hellscape we're actively creating

Rewilding is a thing. I live in a valley where all the farms were abandoned about the time my mother was born. The woods behind my house have strands of barbed wire from an old cattle field. The ridge on the other side of the valley was all hay fields when I was a kid, but are all forests now. I remember walking through the fields to visit some rusting abandoned farm equipment.

Does this balance out the sprawl that is any major city? Probably not, but it can happen.

What's more, I'll point out that the alternative to building out is to build up. Who here dreams of owning a condo or living in an apartment all their life?
