If you look on maps of WV Cold Knob essentially represents the SW extent of highlands (4000+ ft hills) and it stands out from the surrounding terrain on a topo map or just on terrain mode on Google Maps + there's a mini loop on top marked "cold knob overlook" and it appears if you look on a map that essentially it sits on the edge of public land (monongahela national forest)

I got kicked out of the strip mine that leases the land on the high hill (briery knob) that sits on the eastern edge of the high hills escarpment.

My guess is that in the 1950s and 1960s these knobs were either outright public land or simply were private land but since they had been clear-cut timbered in the ~1920s weren't being used for much and public use of the areas was more tolerated than it is now

Americans love violence and confrontation over rules. They live for it. Why give them a reason? I think Americans should have right to roam, within reason (trying to find something scenic, not to bother others and being respectful of houses and yards), but also I turned back because the road was shit and meant for ATVs not because it was private property. I swear I don't recall seeing posted signs @ Cold Knob itself but I could be wrong.
