anyone else here who can't sleep outdoors? I've been staying in a tent on 5 different nights during hikes, and not a single one of these nights could I get any sleep.

It's weird because there was a sixth night I was in a tent, way back in 2021, when I did get some sleep. not during the night, mind you, because I was new and underprepared and was shivering from cold during the whole night. but when the sun came up and the temperature increased, I was able to sleep 2 hours in the morning. and in 2022 I tried sleeping in a Haven tent (lie-flat hammock, pic related), and in this I slept great the entire night.

I've tried varying the amount of air in the matress, from fully inflated to somewhat soft, but this had no effect on my sleep. would be nice to hear if anyone else have dealt with the same and found a solution.

No.

I sleep just fine in a tent, but I have to say, as a stomach sleeper, the concept of a flat bottomed hammock tent has me intrigued. I always ruled out hammocks because you can sleep on your stomach in them. I do too much desert camping for this to make sense taking up space in my car though. Not enough big trees around to use it, plus it's hard to find a good spot to set up my solar panels if there are too many trees around.

If your problem was being too cold or uncomfortable you probably benefited from being up off the ground because that will stop the cold from the ground transferring to you. I car camp so I have a platform and a memory foam mattress I put inside my tent that keeps me up off the ground. I also don't fuck around with sleeping bags. They are too claustrophobic feeling. I just use blankets and sheets like normal.

I never liked sleeping on the ground, love my hammocks though. First one didnt have a underquilt so i froze but the new one does so all good. I string my old sleeping bag across the top guide string to make a top quilt if I need it. Comfy as fuck.

I have not tried a flat laying hammock yet.

I can't really relate because I sleep like a hibernating bear when I'm /out/ but I do need to cover my eyes. Where I live sunrise is as early as 04:00 and its workably light from 03:00; so I'll either keep waking up from the light for the last 2-5 hours of sleep in my tent/tarp or wakeup with a splitting headache. Produces a sort of hungover feeling in me purely based on wakeup conditions.

In summer I solve this by using one of those sleeping masks I got on a plane, and in winter I sleep in a beanie hat I pull down over my eyes. When I do this I sleep better than I do at home, whether I'm in a tent on a campsite, wildcamping, or on a deployment exercise.

My system was always
>Try to hydrate 2hrs before sleeping and always piss before getting in.
>If you're not actively warm before going to bed, eat a small snack to provoke your body temperature to increase.
>Make sure your feet, legs, wrists, shoulders, neck and head stay warm in your sleeping bag. There are many tips on how to do this by utilising garments in unusual ways.
>tuck hands into armpits or down crotch and hold your balls (helps stay warm but also a self-comforting action that lets you relax.
>any mong can rough it - if it annoys you now it will still annoy you when you wake up or can't sleep. Just fix it now.

You have to condition your standards to be lower. Try staying up 36-48 hours, you'll eventually sleep on the ground and overtime it'll get easier to fall asleep

when /out/ my sleep is always very light and I keep waking up few times per night.
but I don't feel fucked up in the morning, so I guess it's alright

So do you mean you can't sleep outdoors or can't sleep on the ground? There's a distinction.

yeah maybe. I'm gonna give the hammock a few more tries and see if I can sleep consistently in it
