Lately soup's been a hyperfocus of mine, specifically ones I can freeze in those oversized ice tray things, then heat up and put in a thermos to take innawoods. Something drinkable that has decent protein, and also won't make me paint the heels of my boots in the middle of nowhere. Been looking at pea soups, just made some potato soup with cottage cheese for extra protien. I have some lentil curry in my freezer.

I'm also thinking about a freeze dryer but that's a ways off. Any /out/ soup recommendations? What do you guys like to eat in the sticks?

i usually eat dry stuff, like nuts and raisins/dried fruits, because its light, i have a lot of heavy shit on me when i'm out and about because i only take 48h tracks at most. But if you have a tooth for soups i recommend soups made out of dried meat and corn, a geologist cooked that up for the group on one of my first hikes and it was one of the tastiest meal i've ever had

I know a lot of people love coffee while they're /out/ but I hate it, gives me the shits.
The middle of nowhere is the second to last place I'd want to have the shits.

What kind of dried meat? Jerky, biltong, summer sausage? What was the recipe like?

I mean if you like soup you can do "orange soup" that I often make at home.

500g sweet potato
500g pumpkin (butternut squash is good)
250g carrot
2 medium yellow onions
50g bacon cubes or chopped up slices
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground cloves (if you use whole cloves put em in a tea egg or something to fish em out)
2 tsp gochujang if you like a bit of heat
1.5 liter stock. I prefer mushroom stock but chicken is ok too.

Brown bacon cubes in olive oil, strain out the bacon and slowly caramelise the carrot and onion in the fat.
Chuck in the spices on low-med and bloom. Then add the rest of the veg and heat through on med / med-high. Add gochujang.
Add stock, simmer for 15 mins or so until all the veg are soft.
Blender. Chuck the bacon bits back in.

BUT... I personally don't like taking a thermos. I like to make a thick hard tack "stew" with just some spices, dried fruit and beef jerky. Or just do a dehydrated meal. Or bread, cheese and dried fruit no heat required. Or fresh caught fish over an open flame with some flatbread and have an orange as dessert. Double serving whole grain instant noodles with spam.

Apple cinnamon hand pies. Pulled chicken and caramelised cabbage hand pies. Bbq pork belly onigiri. Lamb mince flatbread. Spanakopita. Basically any type of precooked filling in a carb jacket just ready to go with no flame is excellent in my opinion.

In the end, the important thing is a filling meal that preferably has some meat and veg in it, or at least some source of fibre if no veg. I dont like hemorrhoids acting up when hiking.

as far as i know he made that meat himself in an oven at home while only using an disgusting amount of salt. i mean it checks out it was an non nondescript jar and a loose bag of dry corn kernels. the only recipe i can give you is that you dump all of your stuff and your backup water supply into the pot and cook it until it smells nice. atleast that what we did. pictured is the thingy he cooked the soup in, but it was way, way, way more burned

I go with:
Chickpeas flakes, Instant mashed potatoes, dry fried onions and some spices.
Just add boiling water, weights almost nothing.

For protein I bring dry sausage, it's compact and very protein dense.
