I do. I basically the tension so the lure I have tied on drops somewhat slowly if you let it free spool and drop to the ground. I haven't had any issues in the wind.

first time I went out casting a fly rod, weather was absolute dog dick windy, yet somehow I managed to land the fly in the water once or twice (not too far though)

For some reason I never catch shit on plugs no matter how many times I try, tutorials on how to use them I watch, or downsize. It feels like their use is extremely situational, meanwhile I can chuck metals or finesse soft plastics all day and hook up or get bit 9 times out of 10

Far from a meme. Just know their limitations. They will readily snap if you go past their tolerance and aren't nearly as durable as a solid rod. So don't 90 degree bend it to brute force unsnag, or go after river monsters with a 6/0 hook.

I've got a 6'6" Abu Garcia (picrel), with a 2000 size reel on 10lb line, that I've comfortably used to catch smaller Murray Cod (~45cm), decent 3kg+ Carp, and a whole range of other freshwater fish.
Fits comfortably in a backpack, and if you're worried it'll snap, just carry a backup telescopic rod. They take up fuckall space and weigh nothing.

NTA but they're just a bit convoluted and temperamental imo and require an experienced angler that can regulate weight properly, etc. Too light on your cast and you could birds nest it. They do offer good precision and can cast in tight spaces, which is the bonus.

If you want simple and oldschool, try to get your hands on an Alvey if you haven't already. Pretty satisfying to use at the beach

I'm aware they're convoluted, but am I correct saying that when you regulated the weight of a specific bait you can just easily cast it over and over without fear of birds nesting? Or do you constantly adjust even then because of the wind and such?

Sounds good, but I'm mainly fishing small and big rivers in land, got any recommendations for old school spinner rods if there aren't any old school baitcasters in that case?

Caught a nice Aussie Salmon off the beach in the rain. As is tradition, rod went off right around the time i was thinking of packing up and going. Put up a good fight too, jumped out of the water several times.
Photos a bit shit but it was raining and i just wanted to scale and gut him quickly. Seagulls had a good feed of guts.

To be honest m8 you could certainly use an Alvey for river fishing, you'd just get a smaller estuary rod & reel as opposed to the massive surf ones. Really simple action once you get used to it and they take a lot of abuse. Got dirt in the reel? Dunk it in the water to clean it off with no issue. They're somewhat pricey, but a worthwhile investment imo. Had my surf rod and reel for almost 10 years and it works as good as the day I got it

As for baitcasters, yeah they can be quite wind sensitive if your weight isn't heavy enough. I haven't used them for lure fishing, but I'd imagine you'd want to be extra sure to keep linetwist in check. Other anons can probs give more info on baitcasters, bc I honestly haven't used mine much. 95% of the time it's either a spinning or Alvey for me

Yeah, that part just sucks, I just want to have a fishing rod that can be taken outside in 99% of the weather circumstances, so I will probably either end up with a spinner or an Alvey if I can somehow find it.

I had a look on the Alvey site and they've got a decent combo deal for their simple 40GDZ reel. It's 80AUD which is about 50 euros. Might be worth seeing how much shipping would set you back, as they ship international.

It'll take up to about 5kg line and comes with a 1.5m rod, so it'd be perfect for freshwater rivers or lakes. You can buy the reels on their own and they'll technically fit on regular rods, but I'd recommend getting an alvey rod. As the first guide is further up the rod and they're also further spaced apart, which helps immensely with smooth casting. I tried my alvey reel on another spinning surf rod when fucking about, and it was pretty janky.

I saw they had a 40GZ combo too, but i wouldnt get that. It doesn't come with drag adjustment/anti-reverse.

A couple of quick tips with an alvey if you end up getting one:
>You generally want to have one of your fingers (on the hand holding the rod) to guide the line back onto the spool when reeling in. This helps it distribute evenly back onto the spool. Becomes second nature after a while.
>Don't use braid, because of the aforementioned guiding of the line with your finger/s. I use low stretch mono

Good/bad idea to add little red dots or other colors/patterns on your hard lures with acrylic paint? I realized the red dots on my old Professor had come off and I redid them with acrylic paint I had lying around (Tamiya paints for scale models). I just wonder if it like smells repulsive to the fish and if there's a benefit to decorating my other lures with various colors/finishes.

How hard am I fucking myself over picking up a 5.1:1 instead of a 7.1:1 baitcast reel for all-round fishing?

Depends on how adhd you are and if you fish more moving presentations or finesse presentations. If you're super adhd and do a lot of slow presentations the slower gear ratio will help a lot, but if you're not jittery its going to make moving baits like crankbaits, spinner baits, whopper ploppers, and swimbaits a lot of work. For me, even just dropping from a 7.whatever to a 6.whatever makes moving baits feel like a lot more work.

Hi everyone,

I grew up fishing with my grandfather.
But I haven't fished much in the last number of years.

I am will be going to a cottage in Ontario on a body of water called Lake of Bays.

Assuming I have no fishing tackle, what would you guys recommend as the foundational tackle/lures/soft baits for me to buy to be able to go and fish for bass and pike on this body of water?

Assume I have rods and reels. And we will have a small aluminum fishing boat to use with a motor and a basic 2D fish finder.

I will be the only one in the group whose fished before and so I want to make sure we can catch some fish as a group to make sure we have some fun.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
