Any hunters have stories/sightings of chronic wasting disease? The concept of prion diseases seems like nature cheating imo
>>
I’ve walked right up to a deer that looked like it had the loading circle spinning in its head. If just stared at me like a zombie. It’s kind of freaky because there’s no intent behind the eyes.

I never dealt with it personally, but as someone who grew up hunting in Wisconsin, by the time I arrived on the scene, deer hunting was substantially harmed. Now, I live in the world capitol of deer hunting, and it's not so bad, but I'm still worried about it. I saw a journal article about CWD breaking through to humans.
>>
>>2881103
There’s still never been any confirmed transmission to humans right? But it apparently prion diseases take decades to manifest in humans and it wasn’t until like 2000s that it was found in wild deer pops.

I think it was on this board that someone posted it, but there was a case of 2 hunters from the same camp that would eat undercooked meat from CWD deer both got CJD.
>>
>>2881164
Yeah I heard about that case, but CJD takes like 30 years to manifest I thought.
>>
>>2881164
Even if it was cooked properly the prions can’t be killed right?
>>
>>2881195
No, that's the terrifying thing about prions, most household chemicals or solvents don't do shit. Bleach has a chance but you need a strong type, specific temps, and exposure time for it to do anything. Lye is allegedly a good way to denature them. The only way to reliably denature the prion is to fucking autoclave it (at least 1000c/1,832f).

Anon, that's plain old incinerating, not autoclaving.

Prions are fake and gay. You cant have a misfolded protein misfold other proteins. Thats not how it works at all. And if it were possible why does it produce damage in only the brain/nervous system? Shouldnt it misfold proteins everywhere and basically destory the entire body? Its ridiculous nonsense.
Its chemicals used in agriculture that causes what they say prions cause.

Hospitals incinerate any fixtures or surgical implements that come into contact with patients who have contracted a prion disease.

Unlike cancer or even viruses, prions are not "living" material, they are mutated proteins and can thus remain viable on contaminated tissue or objects forever basically. Infected prions do not even degrade naturally like tissue. The freakiest thing about them is that there is no cure for them, even theoretically. Your body has no way of distinguishing a mutated protein (prion) from a normal one, so once you become infected there is no chance of curing or stopping the spread.

There must be a way nature keeps these things in check, otherwise the emergence of prions would in a long enough time scale eventually infect all life forms susceptible to it. They literally infect the environment and stay forever. I read somewhere some predictions that CWD could infect all wild deer populations in NA in like 50 years or so
>>

I'd read something about wolves picking them off quick in the past but since they were all but wiped out through the lower 48 deer are mainly hunted by humans, who don't tend to aim for the weak diseased looking ones.
Something's very fishy about the whole thing though yes.

I'm willing to believe the rise of CWD is a result of larger, now unchecked populations of what would have been naturally weaker deer being picked off by wolves now existing far beyond their original natural expiration date; shedding more of the prion proteins into the environment before they expire. With prion proteins lasting so long in the environment, it's no surprise more animals get infected especially with more of it existing in theory out there.
What is suspicious is the rise of alpha-gal containing ticks and that disease itself. Not a good recipe for any hunter or those wanting to live away from the city, as the plentiful meat source (deer) not only are now carrying a prion disease but also help spread these ticks that makes one allergic to red meat (which is what venison is)

Anti-citizen detected.
Control team dispatched.
Reminder to all citizens: Usage of modern pesticides in agriculture is a matter of national security and should be encouraged.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

As if deer ever have intent behind their eyes
>>

CJD can manifest in as few as 5 years, depending. But the CWD/CJD link in the two jamokes from Wyoming is somewhat circumstantial. The one guy did definitely eat a CWD positive deer, but the other guy was merely part of the same hunting club and there’s no confirmation he did. Plus it’s Wyoming, so maybe they caught it fucking sheep.

CWD is concerning to me because of what it says about the future of the sport and the ecology, but even in the case of Kuru (a for-sure transmissible CJD variety plaguing a culture that practiced funery cannibalism, that was actually studied thoroughly), people only caught Kuru from eating dangerous tissues from people who had kuru (though who knows how patient zero occurred). Higher status people who were eating more desirable cuts of their dead relatives didn’t get it, just the poor bastards eating sweetbreads and organ meats.

Since the liver is one of my favorite parts of the deer, I get my deer tested and keep the liver frozen until I get results back, but the prime cuts of meat should be safe (though you should take the steaks from the spine as boneless cuts instead of bandsawing bone in t-bones if you don’t want to have to risk discarding those too.

They have the intent to eat garden plants before dying in a roadway
>>
>>2881083
I’m just surprised that they last as long as they do without getting caught by predators
