Known for his pioneering work in color photography and his effort to document early 20th-century Russia.
Using a railway-car darkroom provided by Emperor Nicholas II, Prokudin-Gorsky traveled the Russian Empire from around 1909 to 1915

Sadly this is a very poor representation. The originals were in tiff files at around 100mb each. These are the condensed.jpeg conversions. The og's are super Hi Res and are Glorious.
I "stole" them from the Library of Congress Archive. here https://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/prok/
I even took the og 3 slide B/W's
I'm a big fan of Pinkhassov
>russian empireProkudin-Gorsky - he went to Paris>90s russiaPinkhassov - the only "russian" in Magnum, married and went to Paris>today's russiaMarkov - pathetic fucking junkie who stayed in russia, couldn't take it anymore and died because of overdoseReally makes you think
>>4505508He did these with trichromes right? How are the clouds so still and crisp? Actually nuts stuff. Truly one of the GOATs
>>4505563yes, you can see marked differences in contrast in the 3 frame b/wsThe process is still mind boggling to me, it's b/w photography.Does not compute Check this river shot. That's him in picrel.
>>4505563I will compress some of the 3 frame picsand post
>>4505562I'm just glad they took the time for our enjoyment.
>>4505565Jesus I was thinking to myself that it looked like trichromes but I thought no way it was so precise. I assumed it was digital colourisation artefacts or some scanning fuck up.
>>4505588checkedThese first ones were cropped c.120 pics. You will see the RGB border in most of the set.
I know the Russian empire had serious problems but when you see it like this it's hard not to imagine that it was somewhat idyllic compared to what was in store for Russia later in the century
>>4505588The LOC are the ones who rendered these. My understanding is they replicated the 3 phase negatives and merged them on a white background as seen above.I am sure the finer lens quality, image alignment and 100 otherperipherals added to an overall enhancement. Also they had to take a pic of the pic so to speak, so the camera usedwould also need to be considered.Fyi the 3 frame b/ws have the same clarityI can't crop this right now , it's just an example
>>4505523This image is what inspired me to try shooting trichromes with my monochrome sensor cameraNever got anything worthwhile from it, too tedious
>>4505530Absolute banger thread anon thanks for posting I love this one
>>4505665very cool. I was inspired also.>>4505751Thanks Fren. I will post this thread to the limit.Thx for joining in.
>>4505507Thanks anon, there are a few photos that I had never seen before in there
So what did his camera look like?
>>4505829more to come ;)>>4505830"There is no known replica or illustration of the camera that Prokudin-Gorskii used. It was a view camera of his own design, perhaps similar to a model [left] designed about 1906 by Dr. Adolf Miethe, whom Prokudin-Gorskii had met previously in Germany".more here on the camera tech https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/empire/making.html
I love this pic
>>4505946>>4505947His composition in some of the shots is Perfect.off-setting the main focusto reveal a much larger vision and depth
>>4505949this looks like a boring shot at firstthen you find the majestic "church on the hill"to inspire you as you toll in the field
If you discard the epic time frame, the epic locationsand the epic state of the art photog method a lot of the the shots are true art.The better photos stand up artistically in any era. That's the Joy of Photography. That moment we have captured one of those Greats and feel a little bit part of the Art.
I am utterly jealous of this motherfucker's compositions. How the fuck 19th century photographers always knew where to stand and the balance a composition so well EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME?
You have to wonder what Russia could have been without communism.
>>4505963pic rel is an old joke, in short it means: hiroshima vs siberian city - even nukes are not as bad as communism
