The "Cityscape" EditionPreviously: >>4507850Thread Question:>Who taught you the most about photography and what's the most memorable thing they said?
>Who taught you the most about photography and what's the most memorable thing they said?He was an enthusiast of photography, however, we never talked about it or any serious topic since he died when I was 11yo and he used to live a bit far away from me. I dunno if there is some genetic component or just a subconscious decision but also I share a lot of personality traits from him and other pastimes like reading. I learned some stuff from all the magazines and books he had about photography that I have discovered from his stuff.Unfortunately I can't remember anything memorable.
not really a cityscape
>Who taught you the most about photography and what's the most memorable thing they said? Before I buy my first camera, I saw a couple of videos from the YouTube channel “35milimetros”, from Ronaldo Nene. He talked in such a enthusiastic way about photography that got me into buying my first camera. Although I can’t remember an exactly quote from him
>>4509594>Who taught you the most about photography and what's the most memorable thing they said?I can't actually identify any photography teacher who's had a significant part to play in the development of my photography skills, such as they are. I've mostly learned by trial and error, testing everything out on my own. Still, I owe a lot to the internet in general: forums, discussion boards, YouTube and Wikipedia, etc., archive.org, etc., etc.As for the most memorable thing I've ever heard, it was from a substitute teacher for my photography class at tertiary school: "you won't take a good photo until you've taken ten thousand photos." It didn't matter if it was true or not, I was still young and impressionable enough to take it seriously and it got me out taking photos.
>>4509594>>Who taught you the most about photography and what's the most memorable thing they said?Cliff Mautner:>First, get a picture. Then, get a better picture.
>>4509594>>Who taught you the most about photography and what's the most memorable thing they said?My high school photography teacher, he was a boomer. We were shooting film SLR in photography class and we also developed the film. It was fun. The most memorable thing he said was how he enjoyed the morphine during his recent hospital visit. I'll never forget his smile when the told the whole class.>>4509655>>4509733>>4509741Nice!>>4509725My favorite pic so far
>>4509594>Who taught you the most about photography and what's the most memorable thing they said?No one's taught me much of anything about photography, I had to learn it all for myself. I don't say this as a point of pride however, as it is very lonely and frustrating sometimes.

Sometimes weird crop ratios can look like they're masking bad composition at the lens, but everything else about this set is done so skillfully that the mix of crops looks more like it's intentional than just meant to hide bad photography.

>>4510414that's what I was getting at: even the greats could be the subject of criticism on /p/it's not about your name, it's about the photo. even being a really famous photographer isn't a guarantee your photos will all be hits.I wonder if we give more liberty and grace to famous photographers and artists and make assumptions that are more to their favour than we would if we saw their art without knowing who made it. as in, do we bias ourselves knowing the photographer is famous and interpret the photo more favourably?

>>4510418I think it applies to art in general. Many people see abstract paintings and just call it scribbles - “anyone could draw this”. Having a big name matters because you’ve already proven as an artist that you can do “conventionally good” art. And now your “questionable” art can be seen as your self expression without as much prejudice. “Maybe he does see something in this mundane thing” kinda vibe.

>>4510698What camera did you get?Assuming you got a mirrorless instead of a DSLR, the hobby becomes a lot less expensive if you get some adapters and start buying vintage glass. There's a lot of old junk out there but there's also some incredibly good stuff going very cheap, just gotta do your research beforehand. It'll all be manually operated (focus, aperture) but it'll force you to learn more about the fundamentals of photography and what goes into creating pleasing shots, rather than treating it like an expensive point-n-shoot or a phone camera.t. poorfag with a large collection of lenses. Haven't been here in a while, god damn the captchas suck now
Started to practice night photography yesterday. It’s hard as hell.
>>4511729No editing involved. I'm just trying to get better at mood and atmosphere so it was a little bit of both finding a good location with excellent lighting I could play around and manipulate. Yours is good too kind of feels like it has a laminal space feeling too it going on like you're wandering around the edge of a map in a video game
>>4511774I actually like this, it tells a story. the composition is actually pretty good too with the wall of the carpark dividing the personal elements from the outside world. notwithstanding that, though, it has the lighting and contrast of a midday snapshot which make it feel really amateur.
>>4511795you need to save your image as a rotated copy, it's not going to work if you upload a SOOC .jpg since the rotation info is stored as exif data which 4chan deletes.
>>4511637I don't like the overexposed cloud nor the low contrast sky but I'm somewhat indifferent to the arrangement of the buildings in the frame. Maybe it could have been better, maybe worse. Overall, this could be better.
>>4511461pretty good, I like the slightly darker than usual sky and the exposure on the wing is great, not too bright and there's a lot of clarity to the small details like the rust, dirt and fittings. I think this photo would earn its place in a photoseries themed around a day out in whatever place you took it or a series about aircraft or the air force. I like the composition, too. It's a bit of an abstraction because it cuts off so much of what makes a plane identifiable as a plane, instead suggesting it by the synecdoche of its constituent geometry, and the star is pulling against the rocket-shaped tip opposite for attention in the frame.
>>4511259A nice portrait desu: the curtain is a really effective frame within the frame, blocking off some negative space and pushing the attention to the dog's face, although the composition would feel more balanced if the camera were shifted down relative to the subject since there is a lot of headroom relative to the "footroom," so to speak. The exposure is great, nothing to criticise, and the focus is right on target but not too shallow.
>>4511193The first thing I notice is the shadows are not very shadowy, they could appear more effective with an adjustment downwards. That would bring out more contrast overall and really make the image more interesting. The composition is not bad, not exceptional either. I heard someone say they prefer shots like this in portrait orientation since it emphasises the height of the trees and I tend to agree with that. I think more care for and experimentation with contrast and composition could improve this image.
>>4511020wow, pretty cool. the colors are the most striking feature, with a very nice pastel, low-saturation background but further inspection shows there's a haze which reduces overall contrast. an adjustment to the blacks and shadows could improve the image a lot. the composition is ok but it could have appeared more balanced if the camera were shifted up relative to the subject. that would put more of the "crown" on the figure's head in the frame and position the pencil in what is otherwise negative space without a job to do. horizontally it's ok: the pencil gets two-thirds and the figure one, a classic rule of thirds composition.
>>4510949grainy. the shadows were dodged too hard, there's some detail suggested there but it's blacked out. I think it would be more effective if it were taken to either extreme: either lifted to show the window details or crushed to a black negative space. right now it seems unaddressed, unconsidered. I'm really indifferent to the grain. I don't think it makes the picture any better or worse. the composition I don't like, mostly because the trees are out of harmony with the only other bold element in the composition, the towering cube. I think a shift of the camera to the left would have yielded a more effective and balanced composition. as it is now, the trees are cut off and the cube is taking a more central position than necessary. vertically it's ok, the lower floor divides across the frame at a classic third.
>>4510901g'day matethe composition immediately stands out but not for the right reasons: the first floor on that building is composed and exposed like a snapshot in comparison with the moodier ground floor view: overly bright and overly saturated by a spotlight, obscured by smudgy foliage details and cut off askew with the horizontal bottom line of its triangular apex. I would have framed it out. I don't like the shadow of the passerby heaps but it's not so bad it needs to be removed, either, it does add some life. I think a 16:9 crop of just the lower half of the frame would look pretty cinematic. all in all it's not too bad, just overweighted compositionally with the questionable first floor.
>>4510898I think this is pretty good. I like the position of the walkway along the left-hand and the parked cars and dining area on the right-hand hand. it's a bit yin-yang as well with a light-dark division. the expression on that lady's face is pretty awkward, though, the way her mouth is hanging open and she's halfway through putting her phone away, and there's some overexposure on the posts just behind that guy's head. I don't usually crop my stuff but that could work here. all in all not too bad at all, just watch out for clipping and take bursts of people while they're walking so you can pick a more neutral expression.
>>4511752The angle is not flattering (the double chin) and the crop seems too tight.
>>4511922true, i didn't notice the chin, thanks for pointing that out. I framed all the shots this tight, I'll keep in mind a wider framing if I ever get another opportunity to shoot portraits because I agree, it's tight.
>>4511924I wish you the best for your next sessions anon, practice makes perfect!
>>4511925thoughts on color, lighting and contrast? I do like how I finished that side of things but I am curious what other people think
>>4511926The face looks a bit blown out, I think you should not fear to take advantage of the sunset light.I'd recommend shooting on the shade to avoid harsh shadows (look at the nose's).Contrast is a matter of taste, do what you like.
>>4511891>I'm just trying to get better at mood and atmosphere so it was a little bit of both finding a good location with excellent lighting I could play around and manipulate. Really good find then, the lighting and colors were excellent and you got the mood down perfect. The shadows are also just right and retained the right amount of detail.>Yours is good too kind of feels like it has a laminal space feeling too it going on like you're wandering around the edge of a map in a video gameIt feels that way IRL too. There's an area that is seems to be readied to become a large business park but has been sitting as long empty streets and avenues for the last few years. I think it must've been an industrial area at one time since the grass pretty brown and there are random areas of just disturbed dirt.
