I want to start a /p/ monthly, or tri-monthly, photo competition where the prize is actually desirable and relevant to photography: film rolls. Of course, they’ll be cheap, readily-available film stock like Ultramax 400 or Gold 200, or whatever else is easy and inexpensive to get ahold of, but the problem is this: how shall voting stay honest, and how shall the winner’s address stay anonymous when I send him the prize? I don’t want the poll’s integrity to be compromised, nor the winner’s anonymity. Who has some ideas for how this could be set up?
>>4519191There is no way for voting to be 100% cheatproof unless you use trusted judges like the long time tripfriends on here could potentially be.Entrants use a tripcode for submission and then for the prize you just send crypto that would be the value of the prize.I've tried thinking about an honest way to have a competition on here and that's my best idea even if somewhat flawed.
The best way to do legitimate contests on 4chan is to do them off 4chan, agent
>>4519191All judges and participants would have to use trip for the duration of the contest. Anonymous shipping could be doable by asking the winner to make public Amazon wishlist and hide the address, that is reasonably safe.
>>4519220I like the Amazon Wishlist idea better than bitcoin prizes, because I want the winner to receive a photography-related thing. I want there to be community voting more than judges. Would a system of voting where you have to input your trip tag from the competition thread work to reduce or eliminate trolling? What I’m suggesting is you would have to submit a picture with a tripcode and then that would make you eligible for one vote, possibly with a second-place vote to eliminate ties. Otherwise, considering having resident tripfags as panel judges makes me shudder. There’s only one or two of them whose photography I respect. If it would make the competition possible, though, well, it’s a compromise I’m willing to make, but not unless the voting system I’m suggesting couldn’t work. I guess having the tripcode tied to the ability to vote could be abused by trolls who would snipe the code from the thread and use it to cast a vote before the user who posted a photo with that code. By tripcode, I mean the string following the !, not the actual password following the #.
>>4519191>the prize is actually desirable and relevant to photography: film rollsCan't feed film to my Z6, sorry m80, but otherwise i am down for a competition
>>4519236>implying you will win
>>4519236Put up the dosh for something better then.
On Strawpoll, there is an option to set up a poll with one vote per unique code. The codes are shared by email. If no one objects to the use of strawpoll, or knows a better service, then the poll could be set up thus: everyone who wants to participate must post a photo and they must post their photo with a unique tripcode and email address. Whatever email address you want to use is up to you. Aliases for your main email seem secure enough, something like "poll_vote_alias1@xyz.com," or if anyone knows a good service to set up a temp or burner mail conveniently.I'd send out codes at the end of the month when entries closed.Obviously, having an email up in the thread for a month or more could be a real pain in the ass for potential spam from trolls, especially if you use an alias tied to your main email.Alternatively, the polling can be restricted to one vote per IP address. I think this would be less secure than with a unique code.PGP keys can be used to encrypt the personal info of the winner, and, as far as I know, you can collect parcels from a post office or parcel locker with an alias. I need someone to come along and take the wind from my sails, though. I don't want to put anyone's privacy at risk. Anonymity is a sacred thing. What wouldn't work with this set up?
>>4519241That strawpoll + email code scheme could work, but if you're willing to trust tripcodes, why not just count up votes manually from the thread? As far as shipping: that could probably work for US participants, question is, would you be willing to ship to international posters as well, or will this be US only? If you want anyone to participate, crypto payments would make that easier, honor code that the winner uses it to buy film.
>>4519242I definitely don't want it to be US-only. I know we have Australians and British posters, as well as some from several other European countries. Just wanna put that out there. I don't even want to entertain the idea of it being restricted to the US. Maybe there is a way to leverage Amazon's global ubiquity to our favour: perhaps the winner could set up an alternate delivery address? or I could use their alternate delivery address to buy a bit of film for the winner from whichever Amazon site would be relevant (.uk, .au, etc.)>why not just count up votes manually from the thread?Honestly, that could work. obviously having a bit of money would be desirable, perhaps moreso to some people than film, but this is the photography board and I don't think it's the right kind of prize. I really want this competition to encourage anons to take more photos, both in the competing and for the winner with their film.
I reckon it could work like this:have one thread for entries, where every entry needs a tripcode. Then collect the images in an album that ideally displays them in a random order, and have a new thread for voting where people post their top 3. Then count up how many points each image gets (1st place = 3 points, 2nd place = 2 points, 3rd place = 1 point). This way everything is transparent for everyone participating. The voting could be restricted to only the tripcodes that actually posted an entry to the competitionOf course this all relies on trusting trips but I guess there's no real way around that. Also it's hard enough to post a decent entry, let alone several
>>4519245You could submit multiple pictures under different trips to get extra votes and easily cheat the system.
>>4519257It's a shame I can't imagine this not happening.
>>4519191>how shall the winner’s address stay anonymous when I send him the prize? You could email them a giftcard code or maybe they could make an Amazon wishlist (I'm pretty sure that keeps the address anonymous).>>4519243>I know we have Australians and British postersBased that we can be included. Amazon operates here, so the wishlist thing would work.>>4519257Same as any online contest really. If major companies can't stop that shit, what chance do some shitposters on /p/ have? It is what it is.
>>4519335>>4519330That's why designated judges is a better idea. Public votes are impossible to do without the risk of cheaters.
>>4519345I can't imagine designating any of the tripfags to be judges, except maybe Burt.
>>4519353Well yes, but that's just how it has to work sometimes. Maybe some other known posters could be judges as well. It could be funny to get zach, that guy that always posts deers in rpt, the dog posters, and whoever else with a posting history wants to volunteer. They would need to somehow prove their identity to establish their tripcode, but that wouldn't be too difficult.
>>4519353I've served as a judge for several local photo contests
>>4519191Sure, but it must be called The Incel Adams Award.
>>4519370Not here, you haven’t. Here, you’re nobody.
>>4519382Creative, juvenile, relevant: wish granted.
>>4519354As one of those you mention, there is a trip I have used in the past.>>4519383Well now's a great time for me to start here too then!>>4519191>they’ll be cheap, readily-available film stock like Ultramax 400 or Gold 200I have access to a pretty wide variety of stocks for fairly cheap, would be happy to contribute if I can just send to an organizer. Can probably see about some random camera related swag too, I just don't want to deal with organizing part at all.
Bumping to say this is a really good idea. Reminds me of /m/'s gunpla groupbuilds.
OP. I suggested the judges idea, but I think you should really give it some consideration. It's really the only cheat free method possible. I mean the judges could cheat by submitting images and voting for them, but even then they could only give themselves a single vote.>>4525622What do you think about having a selection of /p/ regulars judge the competition? It would essentially remove all risk of someone cheating and greatly simplify voting.
>>4525625>/p/ regularsHow can we judge that other than a trivia game about inside jokes, or showing RAW files of previous competitions' winning images
>>4525629Idk man. You know the ones or are you new here? Mannequin anon, the guy that posts the deer pics in rpt, The color accuracy/honest photography faggot, doll posters 1 or 2 in fgt, zach, there's like 3 dog posters, the trips. It's not some trivia it's mostly just people who contribute to the board regularly.
>>4519382This
>>4519191There's only like ten posters in total here anyway. I don't think it needs overthinking.
>>4525625I think the idea of using "/p/ regulars" for judging is practically flawed for a few reasons. It's reliant on a few select people who would have to somehow prove that they are who they say they are. Furthermore, these people would have to be willing and available to participate in these events. If said "regulars" were in this thread and expressed willingness to judge, I'd be more receptive to the idea, but this thread has been up for over a month now (as has the idea of using known posters for judging), but none of them have responded expressing any interest in judging. If there were any potential judges ITT, I'd be more receptive to the idea, but as it is now, I think a Google Form would be okay.Pic unrelated. Posting it for attention.
>>4525714Tripfriends have their tripcodes and we know them from posting history.Dog posters have their dogs. Timestamp phone pic with their dog + their trip for the judging.Mannequin anon, deer anon, and the others can figure out something. Maybe timestamp photo + one of their images on the display of their camera or something like that.Doll anons post timestamped image with one of their dolls.Getting a cheat free public vote is basically impossible or extremely challenging while still maintaining full anonymity and if you have money on the line someone will cheat. It would be foolish to think otherwise.Just gotta get the attention of the other guys. I asked burt a while back to be a judge in a contest I wanted to run and he said sure. The real challenge would be making sure the judges know what and when to do their judging.Last thing I'll say is that you could always do a weighted "popular vote" so maybe the judges votes are 3 points and the public vote is only 1, or have a second popular vote award that doesn't have a real prize.
>>4525721I like the idea of holding a no-stakes popular vote.If you can get the attention of the regulars and they're down to judge, then I like the arrangement. The "when" can be solved just by running a regular general thread and keeping the contest details in the OP like how /m/ does it.
>>4525714I can judge but i don't have specific tendencies like >>4525631 said that would identify me specifically, also i legitimately think some anons are more experienced but they post far in between.I also have an idea but it's kinda gay as it would imply only a certain group of "anons" in a specific thread would be eligible, and some of them probably aren't regulars to begin with, but a single anon (contest runner) would pinpoint individual entities and have a private way of knowing a vote.
>>4525721Everyone you mentioned are retarded autists with zero sensibility for art or technique. Why would they make good judges?
>>4525798Are you implying that an open /p/ vote would make for better judging than a select few retarded autists?
>>4525798That is not the point and also part of the fun. It's a community organized and ran photo contest with what sounds like a roughly 20 dollar grand prize. Aside from preventing cheating it can totally be as unserious and fun as you want it to be.Think of it like a bunch of dads doing a photo contest with a modest prize pool and you get everyones kids to vote on the winner. Same vibes just replace the kids with autism.
>>4525798Half of them post less than half as much as other people post about them and won’t even know this contest happened
>>4525803Absolutely, without any trace of doubt.Tripfags of all creeds and colors should hang, desu
I don't get the discussion about trying to stop cheating. It's completely pointless. The stakes are so fucking low there is no point to cheating in the first place. All you win is bragging rights. Doing any sort of a prize is what's dumb. Just have the contest. If some lameo votes for his own picture a million times he will know he cheated and have nothing to gain from it. The only point of winning a contest like this is to get external recognition.
>>4525812Knowing some loser will 100% cheat means I am not going to be participating.>>4525810It's not so much that the trips post more or less than anyone it is that they are known entities. Go to rpt and ask burt if he'll judge photo contest.
>>4525812Every poll done on 4chan has been biden’d and picrel is one of your potential judges
>>4525815The point is having a wide-ish spread of judges. Some you may like and others you may dislike. That's what makes it fun and interesting.
>>4525798Excuse me, I do the bulk of effort post critiques and info on here and have actually served as judge for local photo contests
>>4525819How about we have a pre-competition competition to elect judges? We could probably get away with a public vote for that. You could even have unlimited submissions, but 1 per trip, and then each trip that wins a judging position gets to judge the real competition.
>>4525816>some you may like>and some may now rig your poll with the help of a brazilian, $3.50, and a VPN
>>4525824Well yeah the seething autist nophoto made the worst photographer on /p/ poll after getting shit on for the 999th time by yesphotos.Of course he was going to rig it. Wouldn't you?
>>4525824ALSO. The creator of the poll rigged it before and after huskyfag aka ken rockwell aka mossad agent 69 rigged it, so I say it was a fair play.
