my dad pulled this tripod out of his stash, and i have no idea what this mounting point is called. does anyone happen to recognize it? the model is the aspen 81109, and i couldn't find anything about it on the internet

looks like you need a proprietary plastic plate which was common back then for cheap tripods. If you are lucky the plate is attached to some old camera or camcorder. You could 3D print one but I wouldn't bother. Arca Swiss tripods are cheap these days so I'd recommend that.

oh well. i was thinking i could try getting a QR plate to see if it would just werk, but i see that there's no way the plate would actually lock into place so my camera would fall out if i tilted it up. well, thanks for the answer. i'll see if he somehow has the camera still

wanted to add that there's a chance it's a relabel of a Vanguard tripod so one might work, might not.

nice, that does look very similar. unfortunately i can't find people selling the plate alone

Here's a 3D Print file for it https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4726617
At the thingiverse site you can see a list of tripods it works for so you could check eBay for a cheap one, I think the one I posted was around $30 total.
The dimensions for the plate are here so you can compare with your head
https://tripodquickrelease.com/plates/QS-03.html, that site doesn't have any available for sale.
If you don't have a 3D Printer you can have someone do it. You'll have to provide the screw but that should be pretty simple since those are fairly standard.
There's a seller on eBay,
quick_reliase_plate_for_tripod_ua that made some QS-03s that you could contact.

I handle quite a bit of gear and often times when people sell stuff to me they include tripods that in some cases are missing the plate. In my experience with these cheaper tripods it is not worth trying to get a replacement as they are usually more costly than the tripod alone. First google result of tne tripod name showed an auction where it sold for 2 dollars.

plus it looks like one of the plastic tabs sheared off so even if he did find the plate, it wouldn't be secure.

yeah i was wondering about that. my dad said he can try finding the camera and then i'll be able to see if the plate is secure at all
