Correct. I took a bunch of photos from the top level of the multistory carpark above Rundle HJ's. You can get a lot of fantastic shots of Adelaide at sunset from the top of some carparks.
>>
>>4523436
I didn't even know the rooftop of that lot was open air, I never tried parking in there for some reason. Shame it's /rpt/ as I'd otherwise post some of my Adelaide CBD pics too, though that also depends on what "recent" constitutes I guess.
>>
>>4523437
It's not open air, it's roofed with bars on the windows and rather annoyingly a mesh as well on the top 2 levels. The mesh can easily be photographed through in most places but for that first photo I couldn't get the right angle due to the mesh and bars, so I had to find a gap in the mesh and then very precariously hold my camera out on the ledge while hoping to god I didn't let my hands slip. Worth it though.
>>
>>4523438
Ah, so it's a lot like all the other lots around then. The only high up open air parking lot I can think of is at Marion near the swim center, you can see pretty much all of Adelaide from on top of that and it is open air (but with the barred walls issue again). I do have a fairly recent photo of Marion at sunset that I liked, I'll see if I can find it quickly.
>>
>>4523439
Start a thread and we can dump and compare. I've got to finish some chores (yard work, fuck yeah) and will dump within the hour. Mix of CBD, the Port, Semaphore, some Alberton.

Not really, just basic corrections during scanning, and a nice sunset. This film stock is pretty experimental, even in 120 variant hence the colors

How do I not suck fucking dick at editing?
>>
>>4523674
what are you unhappy with?
>>
>>4523674
First off, what are you using to edit
And, the most important rule for editing is having a good image to edit. In this picture, the whites are clipping that that means you're losing information. I would have closed the aperture a couple stops so the histogram showed now blown out areas and let editing deal with the darker areas. Next, I would isolate the different areas with proper use of masks and regain control over lighting in each area. And, of course, if you're not shooting RAW or C-RAW, you're losing sensor information that no editing software will ever be able to recover.
>>
>>4523730
>I would have simply destroyed the interesting things about this image and made it HDR in post
Please >>4523674 don't listen to this person
>>
>>4523748
seconding.
brights should remain brights and darks should remain darks.
there is nothing wrong with clipping as long as that's the idea and not a mistake.
I think the picture >>4523674 looks great.

>>
>>4523789
aberration like the little fringe at the very bottom where the light hits a wave? had to zoom way in to even see that. no reason to pixel peep really, if it's not readily apparent when looking at the picture it's not that big of an issue.

also you can just pirate light room classic. it's a lot simpler than darktable.

Idk man I've spent a few minutes now looking at this one and I'm liking it more and more. On the one hand I understand anon saying it's cluttered. Or rather, it's claustrophobic, the plants are in a little concrete enclosure and have no space to grow. But considering the rest of the composition it works for me. If you see a yacht as emblematic of the freedom afforded by wealth, or as the freedom of the sea, then the flowers are off-putting. They're the reality of "normal" or "real" life for many people - stifling, confining, limited, and ultimately not something you're in control of. Not something that you want to be reminded of in comparison to a big beautiful boat that can take you faw away. On the other hand, if to you a yacht is the ultimate symbol of excess among the rich, then the messaging is aligned. They're free, the flowers (and you) are not. Maybe you disagree that you're the flowers, but it's pretty unlikely for most viewers that they're the yacht in any way beyond aspirationally. And then of course there's the relationship between the economy and the environment, where every year swathes of pristine land are gobbled up for all manner of purposes, water grows scarcer, and the sea continues to be a dumping ground, all in the service of dudes who need another, bigger, yacht. Anyway I yammered on a lot about this pic but that's only because I actually looked at it and it gave me something to think about.

I appreciate your analysis on my photo anon. The reason why I took that photo was to show the viewer where I was. The contrast of the public walkway vs what is in the private dock. In my opinion photography only has value because you capture something that actually exists in the real world so I'm not too enthusiastic about having ultra clean squeaky clean portrayals of things where you edit everything out that you don't like. There are infinite photos of giant boats in the middle of the sea with nothing around, what's the point of taking more pictures like that? Picrel are the same boats from the public dock. Nobody would have commented on this.

This is the rpt thread. It's essentially a trash can for quickly showing your stuff to other people. Not necessarily your best stuff, just stuff which you think might have some merit.

Its literally here for people to comment on each other's work, so they can give each other hints on how to do things better. Or tell them to go fuck themselves. You don't often find pro-level photography on an open forum. Pretty much everyone here is an amateur, and a lot of them are just trying to find out how to improve. I have to assume that you don't do any photography yourself because you didnt post a photo. So, with it in mind that you likely couldnt afford a camera on your, lets face it, meager salary, we probably shouldnt kick you while youre down. Just post photos when you can bub.

Beginner here. What is the best way to increase the depth of field so that the entire bird is in focus without sacrificing image quality when shooting in low light? Should I reduce my focal length? Should I reduce aperture size and up the ISO?

Something feels lacking in these and I can't put my finger on it. I feel like I got the vibe right and it's got a feeling, but is the composition off? The colors? Something feels off about them and I'd like to know what anons think.

I am also a noob but I will give you my thoughts. First off, there's no real subject here which is my main criticism. Visually there's a lot going on and it's a bit too much IMO. Then there's the blurry out of focus bit in the bottom right. It just seems distracting rather than pleasing. It's better to have either everything in focus with a broad shot with no real individual focus point, or to have the subject in focus and the background out of focus with nothing in front of your subject that is out of focus and obstructing your view of it. I'd say either try to find a single point to focus in on and try to array a pleasing scene around that, or either zoom out a bit more/reposition and try to take a picture with everything in focus.
>>
>>4524951
This is a bit too close and personal for the lonely vibe, even though it's shot at some distance. I think even more distance might be good to make it feel more isolated. Assuming it was anyway.

The second one feels neither lonely enough nor cozy enough. It's bordering on either but not enough of either to really be a slam dunk.
>>
>>4524957
Bummer, I think you're right. I was pretty limited since my back was to a wall and behind that was a busy road, so that's as far back as I could realistically get.
>>
>>4524958
It's often the physical restraints of the world that keep photos from being perfect. That's why photography is like pokemon cards on steroids. You open a million packs just to find the one that is special and amazing and it gives you that rush.

I like this one the best by far. It feels like someone's story just ended in the middle of the woods and here it is 50 years later. The rest of them you realize it's just an illegal dump. They have much less character. The weed sprouting around the door is also great. Colors on the car itself are also the most interesting especially in the dappled light peaking through the trees.

Looking for advice, do I keep it as is or does this shot need a crop?
>>
>>4525192
I'd say crop because you have him nicely framed by the natural surroundings already and anything beyond that just detracts from it. Like get rid of the sky above the tree line and the extra water to the right.

the vertical framing crowds the house and gives a ton of featureless black foreground. also maybe you should have backed up even more... shooting across the road might have given it some nice foreground elements

I tried some crop, lighter and then tighter crop but it either feels unbalanced or too tight, needing more context around. Thanks for the tips, I think I'll leave it as is and have a sleep on it.

I'll have a look at how my horizontal one looked, I took a few in different ways so maybe that might be a better one.

> also maybe you should have backed up even more...
Not quite as easy, it's a 4 lane freeway with a lot of trees behind that spot I was standing. That place itself had walls of trees and bushes out front too (with one appearing in the edge of the frame).

It would be better if the shooter crouched another 6" and took half a step to the left. That would help break up some of the clashing foreground/background between the bridge and the wall behind it. Still a good shot that shows some thought went into it - I wouldn't even comment on it if it was complete shit.

I think it's a great photo and the criticism is coming from a place of insecurity and jealousy.
