Nikkor 85mm 1.4G focuses in the wrong place if you stop down to f2.8 or f4. If you are taking a headshot 1-3m away and focus on the eyes, AF puts focus 1 cm inside the head. Eyes will be totally blurry. How does this lens have such a good reputation when it fails so basically at its core task. WTF were the designers thinking. I am on a film camera so live view focus is not an option. Unusable shitlens. https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-nikon-af-s-85mm-1-4g/#Focus_Shiftthe 105 1.4 is even worsehttps://blog.kasson.com/d850/nikon-105-1-4-on-d850-cdaf-pdaf-focus-shift/also wtf is with these captchas it is getting too hard to post here
old nikon problem, it's a 1.4 issue, the 1.8 lenses work fine. the fast long primes also ghost quite a bit. also works on the f/2 dc lenses
>>4523979kasson measured the 85 1.4 G here:https://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/another-medium-tele-test-otus-nikkor-focus-shift/>AF puts focus 1 cm inside the headit's not 1 cm inside the head, rather more like 5-7 mm, since that ruler is being photographed off-parallel. whatever amount it is, stopping down seems to make it systematically miss focus completely. i guess film people are stuck with the 1.8 G, since no live view = no way to correct for it.if i have no way of telling if the eyes are in focus in headshots then it is useless to me sadlyidek what focus distances + apertures it will ruin real life shots at but all the tests are a bad sign. >>4523986the 1.8 G still messes up in tests just not as catastrophically.
live VF chads win again
>>4523979>retard anon discovers why SLRs suckbetter get to AF fine tuning retard lolor spend the money on tech that isn't 15 years old
>>4524010>the 1.8 G still messes up in tests just not as catastrophically.i believe it, just never saw it happen shooting irl
>>4524010shooting film on G lenses is retarded, stop that
>>4524297G lenses is among the least compromised available for film and the market is flooded by them>>4524171it is a defect with the optics being mismatched to the autofocus sensing mechanism, not with SLRs> >>4523979> >>4524010was it autism?
>>4524352>G lenses is among the least compromised available for film and the market is flooded by themshoot manual focus you faggot
>>4523979Manual focus chads stay winning
>>4524361the difference is too small to see through the focus screen using DOF preview, and the focus indicator dot is reading the same sensor as the AF doesfml now i am thinking about buying an 85mm 1.4 D instead. i'm NGMI. why the fk are the captchas so hard now. i might be a robot
>>452533185/1.4D owner here, pic related wide open.Outstanding piece of glass but it definitely shows at 1.4 it's a D-era lens. Still sharp enough though. Past f2 it cleans up its act quite nicely. On my D4 and D800 I had to adjust the focus in AF Tune in the menu on camera but once I did that it was fine. Takes a standard 77mm filter and get the screw in hood for it too.
>>4525373Holy shit her skin is green and the bokeh makes it even greener
>>4525382I went back and re-edited it without the profile corrections and shit so OP could see right off the bat what it does. the 1.4D is known for its green/magenta spectrum sphereochromaticism wide open, still a great lens. Nothing you can't correct in post.
>>4525373>so sharp you see the pores on that fat cow>not sharp enough but it's ok I GUESSwhy the fuck do portrait photographers sperg out about sharpness when most of the time it's not flattering to the post wall hags they shoot?
>>4525373wow that pic is really informative thanks. the spherical and chromatic aberrations are pretty thoroughly "vintage" (her arm, the jewels) i think i will just yolo and live with the 85mm 1.4g focus shift
