Almost 20 years of technological non-progress.
Canon sensor from 2008
Sony sensor from 2025

Sony controls every brand but canon. If they buy sony sensors they are defacto banned from directly competing with sony’s top sellers. They never do. s9? Crippled. All fuji? Crippled with worms and bad autofocus. The closest anyone came was nikon’s Zf. Nikon is not so surprisringly breaking from sony and using RED sensors (towersemi) in the future.

Blackrock owns a major stake in both sony and canon. Curiously, its like canon isnt allowed to directly compete with sony’s top selling cameras (a7cII and a7cR) either. The R6V had its shutter and evf axed so compact FF buyers would have to go sony or accept inferior functionality.

Sony has directly caused the stagnation and ruin of the camera industry.

Nikon, Leica, Sigma and Panasonic are all seeking alternative sensor suppliers to get away from sony’s corruption and extortion. Canon, unfortunately, is linked to sony blackrock and they are 100% telling canon not to hurt the value of their share of sony.

If sony thrives, photography withers and dies. Break from consoomerism. Buy used DSLRs until nikon, panasonic, leica, and sigma have more non-sony sensors on the market.

>the great green evil: Sony, Fujifilm, OM System, Hasselblad
>accomplice to evil: Canon
>the resistance: Leica, Phaseone, Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma

I need a travel (city, mountains) all-purpose zoom for sony FE to pair it up with a fast prime. I'm currently a poorfag so I can't afford the 20-70 f4 which would be near perfect, nor the 24-70 f2.8s.
I like the compactness of zeiss 24-70 f4 but I keep reading it's kinda meh optically.
24-105 is supposed to be good but it's bulkier than tamron 25-200, so why not just get more range. any opinions? my head hurts from deliberating over this

Who makes Blackmagic's 12k RGBW sensor?
I wonder if RGBW will come to photo cameras.
>>
>>4524144
I could see a potential benefit to the BlackMagic filter if each color quad alternated orientations (slightly smarter debayering), but as is I don’t see a benefit over just RGBW
not that we have many examples of either to compare
>>
>>4524142
If you bought a Nikon you could consider the 24-120 F4 S, nikon 24-70 F4 S (the snoy zeiss is shit and had QC issues), AND all FE mount lenses with the ETZ21 Pro II.

Snoy: not even once

You're a noob so you don't understand yet, but let me give you this fact now in the hopes that if you don't understand it now, you will learn it yourself in a year or two.
>For the casual shooter, zooms are a meme.
Great for certain kinds of working photog who doesn't want to constantly swap between primes, but a meme for a casual shooter. Primes typically offer lots of great advantages, like brighter, apertures, diminutive size and weight, better image quality, cheaper price... etc etc...
Another kernel of gospel for you:
>Camera body size basically doesn't matter at all for EDC, only lens size does. Even a flagship DSLR is easy to carry if you just have pancake/cupcake lens attached
You can't really carry any ILC camera in your pocket, so you have to carry it either on a shoulder strap, neck strap, wrist strap or in a bag. Any of these cases, it will make no difference how big the body is, until you get into medium format SLRs.
>>
>>4524177

Bs. Zooms are great for casual shooters. Casual shooters don't give a fuck about marginally worse iq or some shit. Retards like me go around lugging primes and change lenses on the go to make the photo that little bit better just to miss the shot.
>>
>>4524178
No, the only use for zooms are situations when you don't have the time to zoom with your feet, which is NOT casual shooting.
For the sake of your own body of work, you should also try and get used to using a single focal length, rather than every photo being at a slightly different one.
>>
>>4524181
>zoom with your feet
By that, streetshiters mean crossing the road.
>>
>>4524184
Why would you try to take a photo of something on the other side of the road? You should cross the road. What, are you shooting street @ 150mm?
>if your photos aren't good enough, you aren't close enough
>>
>>4524177
Kek, the supposed blob camera enjoyer has realized that Canikon zooms are too big to carry.

Anon, the categories of travel zooms and superzooms exist because casuals want to take nice shots on their city walks and hikes. Yes, that only works when the camera company puts effort in ergonomics.

>>
>>4524181
I bring zooms for casual shooting because I've now done this for long enough that I'm familiar with each of my lenses characteristics, and I've decided that I only like bringing primes when there is a certain shot at a certain FL that I already planned for and I want to maximize it.

I also live on the dunes, so that's one more reason why I don't like swapping lenses all the time.

Its weakly possible that panasonic was going for your angle, since micro four thirds is so shit the only way it can look good is if FF is made bad on purpose, but panasonic wouldnt be that retarded. its more likely sony doesnt let anyone who buys their sensors beat the a7c. Because… sony is so shit they can only look good if their competitors are shit on purpose.

Or, more likely, they WANTED to beat sony (they show strong indications of this) but sony simply doesnt allow anyone to directly compete with the a7c series if they want to buy their sensors, and blackrock imposes the same limitation on canon with the consent of the yakuza (so neither too big to fail business interferes with the other and they share dominance).

This sounds like a corrupt and immoral arrangement to white people who have a “make everythint a contest” culture, but its very normal for asian and middle eastern/jewish entrepeneurs to decide on and accept.
>>
>>4524249
panasonic definitely wishes they were allowed to beat sony. they pay shills to say they already have.

but whenever they rely on their own sensors, sony’s cameras turn out much better anyways. they’re not exactly towerjazz. panasonic is generally bad at making cameras. their reputation is set in stone and it affects their camera divisions trajectory. they have their projected sales for each product (almost none) and they cant spend more than that making it. therefore everything ends up value engineered because they don’t want to take a risk, and every time they have, no one bought it. panasonic lumix is a failed business destined to suckle at sony’s teat and milk leica rebrands forever.

Condensed projection on your part. Taking every shitty photo would involve "zooming with your feet", perspective be damned because you have no taste or an eye for a good photograph. It's what you do when you want a shot of a subject, a snapshit in /p/ layman terms. When you want THE shot that you previsualized in your head, then you take out the zoom, get to the point you want and zoom the amount you want to get that shot. Then again seeing opinionated fools like yourself on the board where I was once banned for making an f/64 thread is par for the course.

My own camera is easy to carry. When I carry it. I just don’t take it to the dog park and grocery store every day because I am a man, not a woman who needs to pose and journal in public. Fatherlessness leads them to seek a masculine figure elsewhere, and modern society fills that gap with criminals and ethnic worship.
>>
>>4524268
This is true and its why "Edc" oriented products like those from ricoh fujifilm and snoy tend to be priced very high and perform poorly. They are targeted at irrational consumers who are more interested in signaling than photographing. They dont have to invest in making the camera good because it will only be used to prove it is being used, and anything good that comes of it is just a coincidence. The EDC person never tries to take a good photo. Its more about other people thinking they’re a photographer.

Depends what you're looking to protect them from. Going to have shit like sand or sparks flying at you? Put on a filter. They won't do shit from drops, if anything they'll crack and could be a pain in the ass to remove and maybe even scratch the front element. I’d be 0% surprised if access to better sensors than sony is ready to put in their own cameras (until the ancient ones stop being profitable - consoomers still bought the fuck out of the a6700) came with some confidential stipulations.

Looking at the state of this thread I'll most likely get shitposted to death but fuck it, whatever
I'm in the market for a camera after my old ass sony rx100 shit the bed, I'm mostly looking for something small(ish) to do basic bitch travel photography stuff but now I want to have interchangeable lenses, budget is $1k-1.3k ABSOLUTE max for body + lens
from what I could find my best options seem:
>refurb Olympus e-m5/e-m1 mk iii's for 700-800 and then I'll have spare cash for lenses
>slightly used sony a6600 + sony's 18-135mm oss for a grand
>new canon r10 + 18-150mm is stm also for a grand
>a refurbished sony a7s ii for a grand but then I'll only have 200-300 bucks tops to pick up some kind of a lens
so far I'm leaning towards either e-m5 (fairly small, weather sealed, good lenses from what I hear but dead platform and people seem to have a hateboner for mft) or sony a6600 (also quite small, somewhat weather sealed, good battery, platform isnt dead)
a7s ii seems quite old and bulky and then I have almost no wiggle room for lens selection, e-m1 in my eyes kinda loses to em-5 due to being bigger, and canon r10 while on paper might be good, lacks any weather protection and also looks bulky
Thoughts? which one should I go for?
>>
>>4524479
4/3s just doesn't make any sense, the body is larger than the A6600 for a smaller sensor. There are also no lenses equivalent to 18-135mm that are smaller.
>>
>>4524479
I know you are posting m43 bait, but I'll reply anyway. No one who makes an effort to post on /p buys their gear once. They spend money on it over time and it should have an upgrade path. M43 is a dead system, there is no upgrade path there expect in lenses - spending $10000 to take detailed photos of sparrows.

>>4524480
Olympus makes a 14-150 that is pretty small and has same IQ as the pancake zoom.
>>

>>4524479
I personally avoid Sony cameras due to poor UI/dial utilization.

R10 has no IBIS while E-M5 has excellent IBIS = seconds of exposure handheld comes out sharp like pic related.

Yes, m4/3 is on the way to retirement, but if you want to upgrade in the future you will have 14+ years of newer m4/3 bodies + lenses will be cheap second-hand.
>>
>>4524479
If you get the Canon, you'll have access to their entire EF and RF catalog as well as the wide variety of third party options (EF) that are still used - not to mention the range of older 35mm lenses that are now trivial to adapt (including Canon's old FD lenses).

If you get the Olympus, you'll basically be limited to anything that was made specifically for M43 (that cannot be adapted to anything else), as using lenses from larger mounts without expensive speedbooster adapters isn't worth the hassle. You will also have no more future support from Olympus because they and Panasonic have all but given up on the mount for anything other than video content creators.

Technically it's slightly smaller than the Sony lens, but that's offset by the larger body. Sure you do get a bit more reach (not quite the extra 100mm because the A6600 has more res for cropping) but the point was 4/3s doesn't have anything (that I could find) to compete that is smaller.

>>4524491
sony is shit and you should feel ashamed for using it

Fuji X-T30III with kit lens. You don't need more.
>>
>>4524479
Fuji, olympus, and aps-c canon are all garbage cameras only liked by loser autists that skulk around and photograph brick walls

Go find a used nikon z6 mk1 or z5 mk1 and get the 24-70 f4 to start and 40mm f2 later if you like it. Nikon cameras are actually well made. And even 1st gen Z body autofocus is better than fuji. Fujo autofocus flat out doesn’t work. Not to the standard of their price point or year of manufacture normally but sometimes it just doesn’t work at all.
>>
>>4524483
>comes out sharp
>photo is actually super blurry, hazy, and all sorts of fucked up
>>
I have a A7RV with several lenses that I use as a hybrid so around 60/40 photo and video. Mostly trips, family events, my son. Of course the quality of photos and videos is great and a pleasure to look at. But I often find the camera a bit too big and "too in the way" meaning that it attracts attention. And as much as I try to always bring it anywhere, there are those moments where I just leave it home because I don't wanna bring a bag. Recently I looked through my old Pentax Q files. Quality wise of course much worse but it worked well enough to bring back the memories and such. Even the videos. And that camera was much more of a joy since it was a real EDC.

So I kinda seek for a smaller setup. I guess I can sacrifice the image quality if it's for less weight to bring. The Ricoh GRIV must be nice because it has this Pentax Q tininess, even smaller. Only problem is that it can't film in 4k and that is something I want to keep.. and not sure about the fixed 28mm. I'm also looking at the Fuji X-E5 with those cron lenses. Looks pretty small but I wonder if it's EDC small or does it still require a bag..? Such a pitty that Pentax buried the Q line.
>>
Bought this 6 stop ND filter that I screw on my lens when filming. But it's always a pain in the ass if I do lots of photo and then video alternating. Am I supposed to just leave it on the lens and increase the iso for photos during the day? How would you do it?
>>
>>4524491
There are the Lumix 35-100 lenses, a smaller one and an f/2.8 one that is bigger on paper, but is an internal zoom (I think). Don't know about the Sony one, but 14-150 is almost twice the initial length when extended. Then there's Lumix 14-140.

>Then there's Lumix 14-140

>>
>>4524508
Panasonic lumix is a failed business kept afloat for japanese honor reasons

They exist because sony allows it and leica hasn’t finished outsourcing to china yet
>>
>>4524479
Buying anything but nikon for a hobby (or creative pro) is a fools errand

Canon/sony are pro journalist brands now.
Nikon is the only system that can adapt all film lenses without losing corner/edge IQ because their proprietary sensor covering is thin like film, and they’re the only brand other than leica that’s making a concerted move away from sony sensors and towards alternatives that are actually better at making sensors than sony has ever been

Also all the nikons have focus stacking in camera. Only the sony 61mps do.

>>
>>4524515
Oh no, 2cm and 0.5lbs!

Thats totally worth paying $1400 for actual useless garbage missing everything that makes a camera a camera. The S9 is a shitty camcorder. Their autofocus doesnt even work for 24mp stills. Its only fast and accurate enough to be sharp in 2mp-8mp video where not every moment needs to be in focus.
>>
>>4524515
He’s right, though. The lumix S8 is literally unusable as a photography camera. Panasonic in general just doesn’t make good cameras. They cram pro video firmware options into frankly terrible cameras so amateur cinematographer wannabes can LARP

There's some CA, but also a lot of gray haze. I think it's a combination of trying to hand hold 1s and shooting without a filter with very a small aperture.

The OM-5 shill in the previous thread had a much nicer shot, because I think the ND simulation takes a bunch of shorter exposures and then aligns them when stacking, so it's easier to hand hold.

>Overall CineD Camera of the Year winner – Panasonic LUMIX S1II
>This year, numerous excellent cameras were released, making it challenging to choose the best one. Among the prime contenders, the Panasonic LUMIX S1II emerges as our camera of the year 2025. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the talented team at Panasonic for their remarkable creation. We eagerly anticipate the company’s future endeavors.

>Dynamic range results with IMATEST show good results, around 12 stops at SNR = 2, even without using DRE, and the exposure latitude reveals 9 usable stops, which is in the upper end for consumer full-frame cameras. All in all, the LUMIX S1RII is fit for all purposes – high-res still photography, solid videography with powerful internal 12-bit ProRes RAW codec, also allowing high frame rates at 4K120p in full frame.

Why would you need a whole ass dial for cont/single shot... and why would you not have the mode dial on the left side where it's out of the way? Are you guys switching modes on the fly? I put my camera in M when I buy it and then it never leaves M. The EOS 1's just have a button instead of a dial for all that shit, which means you can change them with one hand but I prefer it, there so much more space for useful stuff, like a top LCD. Magnetic filters
15& on aliexpress some no name. The better quality ones are more expensive. I have the no name ones and the magnet power is not that great but usable. I don t know how powwerfull are the nrand ones like nisi klasse etc
The only problem is that you have 2 more rings one attaching to the nd filter one tu the lens and i get corner vignette on wide lenses as you get a small tube, a couple of mm, between lens and nd filter
There are some magnetic filter rings that are slim or even magnetic filters that are magnetic by design so you need just one ring on the lens. I don t have them so can t say anything about vignette. Search for reviews

“Normal” people go for $500,000+ houses with $4k/mo mortgage payments or live in $2k/mo city apartments

Someone who lives in a smaller house on the edge of town and drives an older car, while still having a job as prestigious as “unionized factory worker” has enough disposable income to buy new sony and canon mirrorless, YEARLY. And we’re not even asking about people with useful college degrees who still, live away from the city center, and drive an older car. With their $180k/yr salary.

>Why would you need a whole ass dial for cont/single shot... and why would you not have the mode dial on the left side where it's out of the way? Are you guys switching modes on the fly? I put my camera in M when I buy it and then it never leaves M.

When I started with Lumix I liked the drive mode dial on the left because I could instantly see, and set while the camera is off the drive mode. I also kept the camera in manual mode.

More recently I started using C modes and in those C modes I have the camera set to manual, but the manual settings are based on shooting situation C1 for landscape/scenery (slower shutter, lower ISO), C2 for action (faster shutter, higher ISO). If I'm doing a landscape shot and some birds/animals appear I quickly switch to C2 with my thumb.

I would like to have burst in my C2 mode and not in my C1, but the drive mode dial does not allow it. My camera is pretty old so maybe it's possible to override the drive mode dial on newer models with the custom settings, but the obvious solution would be a "C" marker on the drive mode dial which follows the settings of the C mode and the other positions work as overrides.

NASA cant even keep up with the chinese space program anymore because of the cost of protecting random middle eastern shitholes, liability lawsuits and DEI. Imagine still seething that they made it further than russia 50 years later.

Are those Voigtländer Noktons worth the price? They seem to have that "magic" rendering from 1.4 to 2. By magic they mean blurry, not sharp, low contrast and lots of flares. Sounds quite bad but apparently it has a unique look that is still loved by quite a few.

My question is just.. is the image quality any different compared to those 100 bucks chink lenses? Pergear, 7artisan, etc.

AF-S refocus test then. Yeah, this was never what anyone was talking about. It’s wholly unrealistic, easily fucked up, especially by these retards (OL is not very reputable and runs imatest on single copies paired with genuinely bad photos) and doesn’t have any bearing on panasonic’s bad AF-C performance.

Yet another case of panasonic shilling indians posting shit taken from shoddy pixel peeping centric sites. Field curvature, copy variation and falloff characteristics aren’t in their vocabulary so i’m not surprised they performed such a useless test and wouldn’t be shocked if they touched the camera each time.

>>4524693
No one likes sony here. It’s usually brought up as an example of cameras that are almost as soulless and poorly made as panasonic aka 5 year old snoys running ML. On the other hand there seems to be a paid lumix shill here begging people to buy that POS S9.

I met a 5DII user on a hiking trail yesterday. They seemed economically well off but they had a beat to shit camera and probably the shittiest 50mm f1.8. And they looked exactly like this.

I asked them why they used such an old camera.
They said “well mirrorless is like, kind of a downgrade man. cya” and then pulled their dog off my leg and left, probably to go take a photo of the only thing that’s out there: rocks, pine trees, and geese.

Vintage DSLR shill phenotype. Remember it well.
>>
>>4524736
Kind of strikes me as the kind of guy that has freed himself from the gearfagging.
No reason to buy more shit. The camera is ancillary to the hike.
>>
>>4524736
How many 5DII users did you meet again?
>>
>>4524738
One with a malinois puppy in a cringy tactical harness (figures) but he basically looked exactly like the D200 and pentax users i’ve sighted.

>>4524737
Why cant you be one and done with a newer better camera like a fuji? He said mirrorless is bad. Why are they like this?
>>
>>4524740
If this man was sane, the mirrorless is bad mantra is probably more to do with the increasing 'computerized" feel MILCs lend to photography. DSLRs feel a bit more like an SLR sans film than just a bigger mirrorless.
This was a man you met on a nature walk, who per your description is likely financially content, and perhaps even free of significant strife in his life. What does a newer camera give him that the 5DII couldn't? Dude sounded zen.

Depends on the Nokton. The x-mount f1.2's are awful. The 35/40 f1.4 classics are pretty popular for their look:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/72390397/Caro-Lossberg-in-New-York-City
The newer 28/35 f1.5 noktons have had seemingly worse QC, and the 35 in particular suffers from a midzone sharpness dip that you can see towards the end of this review:
https://jacktaka.com/voigtlander-35mm-f15
My copy had a slight front focus, but getting sunstars at f2 was awesome.
The 21mm f1.4, 35mm f1.2 III, and 50 f1.5II noktons are all among my favorite lenses for the focal length. The 75 f1.5 is nice too, but just has boring modern rendering.
>>
Is the Nikon Z8 still worth it? The Sony A7RV is cheaper used, higher res and same DR. Z8 has faster readout and burst. I shoot a lot of Landscapes now with a 24mp camera and would like some more detail. I also want to get into wildlife photography. Should I stick with my Z system or switch to Sony? I've used both in the past and prefer Nikon's color and menus. The recent news of Nikon falling down is also putting me off from investing more into the Z system. If you have a Z8 please give me your feedback!

The Sony has like half a stop noise performance and significantly better dynamic range below 800. I'd say there are very few situations where more than 10fps is beneficial. Pre-capture is far more useful and something that the Sony lacks, although how important it is depends on what exactly you're shooting and how predictable it is.

the image quality is similar to the chinese manual lenses but the practical quality is much higher. smooth, stable operation, clicked aperture ring. if the cost-cutting measures don't annoy you, might as well go with the chinese ones. i have the 23mm nokton for fuji and it's my favorite third party lens on the system. the softer image complements the film shots i take and it feels nice to operate. i have the 35/1.4 as well, which is sweet, but the iq is still noticeably modern/digital

Mirrorless is the superior tool for accurately capturing a scene which is an undeniable fact.
Mirrorless with exposure simulation active allows the photographer to do real-time comparison between what they see and what the camera sees for adjusting camera settings until it's a match. This is necessary because the way that light affects the human eye versus a camera sensor is very different, especially in low-light scenarios.

Yes, you can do it with some DSLRs in live view if you have a LCD loupe to block light pollution, but the back displays are generally low contrast LCDs which are far inferior to the OLED viewfinders that most mirrorless cameras have.
You could also hook up a good quality hooded field monitor to a DSLR, but for the price and inconvenience you may as well go mirrorless.

For beginner photographers on a budget I recommend going for used micro four thirds or fujifilm since they will not be stunted in their learning by getting stuck in obsolete DSLR workflows/habits like spending hours on a boomer PC paying insane amounts of money to edit the raws.
>>
>>4525006

Most people shot what they shoot because that is what they could afford, or after switching systems conclusioned that that is what satisfies them ergonomically, or lens availability or weight wise, iq wise coulour wise. >90% of people don t switch cameras or brands every months or year. Most keep them for a couple of years or until they break or become too old and are missing new features that the owner wants/needs
<0.1% of photgraphers shot all brands top cameras to know how they compare.

that's why he gets so upset by dpreview pxlmag etc links to objective data, because that's "doing your own research" while he wants you to "trust the science" i.e. accept the consensus that canon is the best because it sells the most.
>>
>>4525052
Dpreview and pxlmag are not objective data

Dpreview uses inconsistent tests with a worse program than darktable and bad lens selection, combined with tint corrections to hide bad color science, cheating with bad lighting, or both. Use photonstophotos and adjust for dxomark measured ISO.

pxlmag dramatizes differences with bad photoshop skills and a lack of real world references. Use photos of average height (6ft2in) men holding cameras instead.
