Hi, I heard this was a good place to get feedback and advice on my photography.
How can I get a consistent “look” with direct flash portrait photography?
Specifically, I usually shoot in shutter priority and a static ISO depending on lighting. I have been keeping my flash manual because I noticed TTL was very inconsistent with flash power and not every shot came out how I wanted.
The issue I have is that as lighting changes and as I move around or change my focal length I have to adjust my flash, take a test shot, then adjust again, etc. until I have it dialed in to the “look” I am going for.
What can I do to improve my process?

Get a light meter
>>
>>4531352
There is no such thing as "direct flash portrait photography".
Your flash should be off to the side, slightly higher than the subject, tilted down towards the face.
If you're using TTL, you should do spot metering on the face.
But if you have the time and space, you can just dial in the background (without a flash) and then use the flash to light up the subject manually.
Also, get your subject further away from the wall (closer to you) and find a way to make to composition at least somewhat interesting.
Your background is way too bright here, mainly because you have placed the model directly against the wall.

As you can see you've been mislead.

I’ll look into it, thanks!

I appreciate the tips on my composition. This is not the best photo I’ve ever taken.

Like the person below you said, I’m trying to imitate that style of photography, I’ve heard it called “direct flash” but whatever term you prefer.

I have a shoot coming up tomorrow so I will try to apply some of these tips to it.

The "style" you are trying to emulate is shooting a disposable film camera.
A disposable film camera has an f11 plastic 30mm pancake lens and uses a manual flash which is intended to light up a completely darkened subject at a distance between 1 and 3 meters from the camera.
This you can easily set up with any dingy old camera with manual mode and a popup flash.
Go ham like the retard that you are.

>get a consistent “look” with direct flash portrait photography?
Use the same settings and shoot at the same distance, easy.
>shutter priority
If you want consistency across images, regardless of flash or not, you should be in M. Why would you want your aperture or flash power changing?
>as lighting changes
Big point of using flash is that you control the lighting. Your flash should be overpowering ambient light changes.
>change my focal length
You should stick to the same one if you want to be consistent, but changing focal length itself does not change how flash relates to the subject and ambient lighting, focal length is basically just cropping your field of view. Your flash exposure would only change through distance, flash power, or aperture/iso.
>I have to adjust my flash, take a test shot, then adjust again, etc.
Yes, this is called learning. If you practice, you will eventually learn what settings to simply used based on your experience.
>What can I do to improve my process?
One practical thing to consider, when shooting manually with flash, is that shutter speed can be used to control for ambient exposure. If you drop from 1/200th to 1/100th, while keeping your flash power and aperture the same, the only thing that changes is the ambient light. To the flashed subject, 1/200th or 1/100th makes no practical difference. HSS compatible flash will give you more flexibility.
Another good thing to know is the inverse square law. If you move twice as far away, your flash will be giving a quarter of the light.

For reference, most point & shoot disposables are roughly around f9.5 to f11, 1/100 to 1/140, with a 22 to 32mm lens, with a single flash power. Most of the premium compacts are around 28mm to 35mm with much faster lenses.

This was extremely helpful advice. I did a shoot last night and I started in Manual, adjusted in for the background lighting I wanted, then took some test shots to dial my flash in and I’m very happy with the results. Will post when I finish editing.

The picture I just attached is one of the better photos I have ever taken I think. In terms of lighting, I like that the subject does not have deep shadows and you can see a bit of the shine from the flash on her (camera left side).

>I like that the subject does not have deep shadows and you can see a bit of the shine from the flash on her
Direct flash photography is a fine beast to balance. Go too hard and it's very obvious you blew your big bright load on the subject, which is great if that's what you want, but less is more when you're just trying to expose properly and fight against imperfect lighting.
I say this because it looks like you're actually doing the thing 95% of posters talk about doing instead, and maybe its worth experimenting with a more sutble fill flash.

Since is a flash related thread i l post here. I want to buy a good flash and use mainly for macro but not only.
Some anon in the macro thread recommended l me the dual macro flashes. But they are quite expensive and don t know if they are really usable or easy to use outside of macro.
Was thinking about the godox v860iii but now the v1 is almost same price. V480 was jus on sale for 120euro, and i ve seen on the used market (but new) the v1pro for almost same price as v860iii.
Was also considering a viltrox spark as is dirt cheap and small but don t know how good will be for macro or if it will cast shadows of my lenses as is quite low on the camera. I like to do a lot of focus bracketing so the flash need to have some juice.
The v1 and v1pro and the 860 all have the same power 76w only difference is round head vs rectangle and guide number.
>>
>>4532136
76ws? I just purchased a 9600ws flash lol
>>
>>4532136
Depends on what camera you're using.
If it's a Nikon with a popup that can be used as commander, the best option is probably an SB-700 or SB-910, but SB-600 and SB-800 are fine too (just a bit more finicky interface).

you should be able do this style with a lightmeter and a flash bracket. sometimes with 3rd party flashes you get hiccups in the camera communication so you have to go manual and use the meter. i got sick of this and just bought a nikon flash for this application.

if this shot is yours you have the flash position solid, you don't want to see much shadow on the backdrop
>>

coomerism is a horrible addiction isn't it. Why does anyone care about your worthless coomer bait when there are petabytes of similar free material already made?
>>
>>4532343
Coomerism.
Nigger you need to stop being a gay incel and understand that non homos enjoy seeing naked women. I don t care if there are 1 gorillion pics of naked women on the internet i m not going to stop being a heterosexual and become gay to not enjoy the naked body of a woman.
i fucked my wife a lot of times, i should stop fucking her, i should stop looking at her becouse she is coomer bait, there are 5 billion women on this planet with ass pussy and tits just like hers, maybe i should turn gay or trans because that a more niche area and there not so many pics of them naked on the internet. Fucking women is too mainstream for you?

>thread asking for actual practical shooting advice
he's asking for flash photo 101 which could be solved in 1 (one) google search or one (1) ai chatbot request. Truth is he's using a pop-up flash so full frontal only and the only way to do full frontal popup is to let go, bracket flash comp and get SOVL

also his pic is ill framed, holds no story, no subtext, I could have worked crazy on these 80's party hall carpeting and curtains and the problem here isn't his flash which is perfectly fine no red eyes no shadows behind the girl etc

Order Three: Masking the Absence of Reality
The third order is where the framework does its sharpest work. The sign now pretends to point at something that no longer exists. It is a representation of nothing, dressed as a representation of something. The everyday case is the weather app in a windowless office: bright yellow sun on screen, pouring rain outside, sunglasses packed on the basis of a sign that is masking the absence of the state it claims to describe.

Baudrillard’s Disneyland reading sits here too. The park is not the fantasy enclosure inside an otherwise authentic America; it is the fantasy enclosure that exists to certify the rest of America as not-a-fantasy. By overtly declaring itself imaginary, it performs the existence of a real outside by contrast. The same move generalises to digital twins: any system that publishes a contained “fantasy zone” (the training sim, the synthetic-data corpus) while presenting its surroundings as authentic is doing the same work. The labelled artifice is the alibi for the unlabelled artifice everywhere else.

after shooting with my film point and shoot i have developed this approach
set my camera at f16 to f11 depending on the distance to the subject 1-2m

set my flash power to around 1/4 (GN14 rated flash)

then mess with the shutter speed until the background looks good

honestly for that direct flash a film point and shoot just werks with no messing with it
and to recreate that in digital is just as above
