What do you photograph for if? I have thousands of edited photos on my harddrives that I shot in the last 15 years. Family, travel, etc. The only purpose I found is to look at them like once per year and get some feelz and nostalgia. Maybe very few of them get even sent to my family whatsapp group. And that's it. Sometimes I wonder.. is it all? No of course not because it's also a learning factor. I can see that my framing and editing style improved vasty over the years. And most important I enjoy the process of taking photos and editing them. Reading about new gear is interesting too.

I often read that people like to print, wether a big picture on the wall or photobooks. But I can't justify spending €€€ on those books that I probably look at even less often than directly on the HDD. Also whenever I print a bigger pic and put it in a frame.. after weeks or months I don't wanna see it anymore.

Make zines and leave them around town. Print, frame, and gift family/friend photos. One off photobooks aren’t that much money and you can leave them out for guests to look through. I plan to print some through Mixam.

I print, I have a few on the wall that I rotate for others when I feel like it. I do a little darkroom printing when I feel like it, a tiny bit of RA4 printing when I really feel like it. I did paid work for a few years, real estate photography when easy mode image blending with a monobloc was novel but while it was pretty decent money it sapped my desire somewhat to shoot for fun.

So by far, the major reason I photograph for is the process of photographing in and of itself - being out with a camera for the sole purpose of using the camera is a pleasant exercise in mindfulness, I find it nearly meditative.

Most photos end up in the trash unfortunately no matter how much worth we put into it.

So do our earthly remains no matter how much worth we put into us.

Don't you think your kids or grankids someday find your HDD (pray they don't find your hidden adult comic folders) and find themselves in a world that you created with your photos? Your surrounding, places you visited, etc. I only have very few portraits of my grandgrandpa and I find them fascinating, I often try to imagine them.

But for that purpose I wonder if books are the better medium as anything digital is easily deleted or damaged

To be honest a major reason I actually share and print photos is to belong in an art community.

Print photos you want other people to see/keep after your death. At some point you'll get old and sick. You will forget about your old HDDs or won't be able to maintain your NAS and lose all of your digital photos.

>What do you photograph for
I do it for myself. I do it because I enjoy the process. I do it because I want to have some memories to go back to in 40 years from now. I do it in hope that maybe eventually I'll get good at it and start producing good photos lmao.

Fun fact of cinema, they consider digital unreliable even by means of obsolescence (formats change and what is readable today may not be so tomorrow) so long term archival is done on film even for movies shot digitally from the get go.

No they aren't, they operate the same as any data archival company. They do a 3-2-1 backup system and use LTO tape for longterm storage as it's both extremely cheap, extremely reliable and can store up to 40TB on one tape. It's also much easier to store and less likely to be damaged than film.

I bought a camera to take photos of my first niece around 2007. The point and shoot my mother had was so slow all the photos were blurry. I keep buying gear because it's fun to dick around with all the different parts. There are cameras and lenses I never use, they just sit on a shelf like decorations. I only use my newest. The old ones are so audibly noisey and slow to focus by comparison that I just dont want to use them. I just dont have the heart to throw them out.
