Borna virus is not unknown but it almost never infects people. If it does, people die.

Mercurius magazine:
https://www.merkur.de/bayern/borna-virus-fordert-todesopfer-in-bayern-infektion-verlaeuft-fast-immer-toedlich-94296070.html

All of the infections were in May 2026 and they were in Bayern.

Borna virus was discovered in 1813 by a German virologist. It was infecting horses. In 2018 the virust human case appeared. At somepoint forensic scientists realized several people who were dead happened to have borna virus before their death. Putting their deaths into a new light.

The virus is now mandatory to be reported to German CDC if discovered, this had changed in 2020. Human case examples remain low but several previously unexplained deaths may have been caused by borna virus.

They believe amount of deaths since 1980 maybe 60.

>The virus is thought to be spread solely by people unknowingly getting in contact with feces of German vole

>But the mammal ranges from Germany all over to Italy and there are no known cases of disease in Italy
