Capitalism is superior to collectivism, but the distribution of capital being so skewed is the problem. When the majority of the population is dispossessed of everything but their labor, people will forfeit liberty in favor of a more powerful government offering them protections. In a society with a majority of the population being propertied, this sort of government wouldn't be necessary.
