The people are interested in their interests, that's why they are common. They aren't interested in power or leadership they just want to pay attention to their happenings and what is going on with them. Why should society be run to pay their interest special attention. They are already doing that themselves. They don't give a shit about anything except their own basic needs and think society should revolve around allowing them everything they want or need, usually for free. But, in times of trouble they used to stand and fight for their nation or way of life and handily so. Now it's just a bunch of people crying because they work 40 hours staring at screens in air conditioning and how it's ruining their ability to live. Technology, the great equalizer is about to equalize and then some. Left ideology is always presented as some altruistic empathy. In times of great scarcity, that will fall away soon enough.
