While drugs do make it easier, you just need to be sober for like 12 hours to get into some kind of program. I don't know about the 6 month window, but it took me about a year and a half to become independent again. I did have veteran benefits that helped me tremendously. I always know worst case scenario, I could lose it all and PROBABLY come back again, Inshallah.
