I was under the impression that nordic countries with harsher weather had strong host cultures, where you could basically rock up to any random home, ask for a room and a small meal and they'd give it to you. This was a trust based thing based on the fact that you never know if you'll be lost and adrift and relying on the hospitality of another to survive the cold, long night. When I was a kid I visited a Swedish family's house and I think Swedes might be ontologically evil. Everything was great until dinner time. All of a sudden I had the stop banging the mom and I was immediately sent to the guest dungeon where they chained me to the radiator and forced me to watch a livestream of them eating meatballs without me. In times past in the states, it was common for a group of kids (couple brothers and a tag-a-long from school for ex.) to go next door to a family home with 3-4 kids. We might expect them fed, but i more often saw dinner delayed and kids asked to leave for their own dinner. If they were fed often (more than twice a month or so) by a family, the other would make it up to them out of a sentiment of indebtedness. I can see, with colder climates and fewer resources, why that might be more serious with a whole gaggle of children. Especially once a week or so!
